I received a wonderful message today on FB from Tangela, who I show in this graphic.

Part of it said "I just want to say thanks for everything you’ve done for me. You played a huge part in the woman I’ve become today."

In another message, a past conference attendee wrote, "Daniel you are a biblical example of loving thy neighbor. I can imagine you in the spiritual realm when Father-God says to you, "Good and faithful servant well done."

It's messages like these that keep me doing this.

I led two different volunteer-based program in Chicago from 1975 to 2011.

Recruiting volunteers and students and keeping them involved for multiple years was what made the program valuable.

I share some yearbooks in this post. These show some of the activities that helped with retention. https://tutormentor.blogspot.com/2024/04/retaining-volunteers-in-tutormentor.html

The former President of the United States is selling pieces of the suit he wore for his mugshot in Fulton County, Georgia, where he has been indicted for his alleged attempts to overthrow the results of a democratic election.

He's probably getting fabric from China and selling it as "parts of the suit".

Just like his MAGA hats.

I see a growing number of data dashboards showing "where" people need extra help, but few blueprints showing what help is needed, when, and for how long.

See this concept map at https://tutormentor.blogspot.com/2023/12/teach-youth-to-do-this-work.html

Use the articles I point to as a study guide & support for planning teams.

If anyone has a concept map like this, w links from each node to libraries of actions that could be duplicated, please share the link.

For 50 years I've held role, connecting people who could help to kids & families who need help, based on indicators like high poverty or poorly performing schools. https://tutormentor.blogspot.com/2018/09/the-day-after-labor-day-network.html

From 1973-1990 I held retail advertising roles with the Montgomery Ward Corporate HQ in . That was an intermediary role, too. Our ads were intended to draw people in many places to our stores.

Who takes this role for youth orgs in your city?

Popular discussion of the harm caused by guns focuses on deaths, overlooking non-fatal injuries. But for every kid in the U.S. who dies from a shooting, 2 more are treated for bodily harm.

This is not a new problem. I wrote this blog article in 2008 following a media story titled "Schooled in Fear".

https://tutormentor.blogspot.com/2008/08/schooled-in-fear-suntimes-special.html

What would be new is leaders using maps to guide consistent, multi-year, distribution of resources to all high poverty areas & places where indicators show a need.

On such a site media and leaders would be people using visuals, like & to show where kids and families need help, along with all the different types of help that are needed, over-and-over for many years?

Does it exist?

The past few days were a stark reminder of how unbelievably more toxic Twitter/X has become and how it’s lost most of its utility as a political communications platform. I wrote this a while ago - I think it’s still relevant:

    only:

The debate about whether parents should or should not spend time educating their kids after school, or if that's the school's job, has strong opinions all around.

I don't judge any opinions on the spectrum, because I know that those that feel like "it's the school's job" say so more out of the reality of time constraints of surviving US racism as an underpaid Black person, and I know that Black parents are more likely to help their kids with homework.

    And... 2 Sigma🤷🏿‍♂️

I have supported volunteer-based tutor and mentor programs that operate in non-school hours, for more than 30 years because they make FREE, tutoring, and mentoring, available on a long-term basis to kids living in high poverty areas.

Furthermore, in some programs they educate volunteers on issues of race, poverty and social justice, so more take roles in ending these problems.

I support tutor/mentor programs in Chicago from this website. https://tutormentorexchange.net/mission

I wish I could celebrate news of the departure of the single most malign influence in English-speaking democracy, Rupert Murdoch, but I fear Fox will only be worse under son Lachlan & that this is a means to solidify his power before Dad's death.
We have Murdoch to curse for giving us Trump, Brexit, and a right-wing news monopoly in much of Australia. I also blame him for launching media's war against the internet--because he was pissed off he failed so badly online, a story rarely told. 1/

Did 24 hour radio talk media and people like Rush Lembaugh predate Fox News?

I've read book series at least 3 times. Just finished watching first four episodes of Season 2.

It seems they took all the small stories from the books and put them in a hat, then drew out stories that they put in each episode. Interesting, but confusing if you're trying to tie the show to the books.

I need a detailed article showing each cast member (photo/character name) so I can figure out who I'm watching. Not just main characters, but minor ones, too. Who has that?
