I switched from Windows to Linux in 2006, and used exclusively Ubuntu until, idunno, maybe four years ago. In all that time, I never had a good experience upgrading from one version to the next. I always had to do a clean install, so after a while I mostly stopped trying upgrading, but still did try one more time somewhere close to the end of that period, I think. Same outcome.

Now I just did my second upgrade of Linux, based on Fedora, and it seems to have worked fine!

@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@forteller Yeah, I had a lot of issues too in the older versions. I think my first one was 9.10, although I briefly used 7 something. It has gotten a lot better though. I no longer use it as my main OS -- I switched to Debian -- but I have several VMs with Ubuntu, and it was the main OS at my last job.

I'm sitting at the airport waiting for my flight, and trying to figure out if i can see my apartment building from here. I think I've spotted the next door six floor apartment building, but not sure 😄

I can see the ocean on the other side of the airport-ish direction from my balcony.

So… what are folks talking about on mastodon these days?

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@Patricia Depends on the day. Yesterday people were talking about Russia invading Russia, and the couple of days before that a lot were talking about the latest episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Before that, I don't know. It's ancient history. 😊

I've spent a lot of time rewriting a pretty large GUI tool in my open source project. The old one has been deleted along with the tests, and the replacement consists of 2 core classes and 3 GUI classes. Now I have ~1500 lines of code to write new tests for 😅

I just finished 100% test coverage of the 2 core classes, and I have the much larger, but easier to test, GUI classes to go.

Latest Blogpost:

With the latest episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, I just had to write a post about the new era of Trek. It's about more than just this episode, but I spend some time on comparing it to similar episodes too. 😊

@dekkzz76 This isn't really a review of the episode, but of the show itself, using the episode as an example of how it's doing compared to older series.

Because of that, I didn't want to go into the depth of the topic. So I didn't miss it as much as I just skipped a pretty heavy topic that is a lot more complicated to cover.

Say what you want about USA, but it's the only place in the world where I've been consistently able to find clothes that fits tall people. I'm 187 cm (~6'2").

For a year now I've been hunting for jeans I can use. I have a single pair of 34" length left, and those are technically a little short.

I was on a trip to the US once with a fellow uni student of 207 cm (~6'9"). We hunted for clothes there, and found lots.

Just got a pair of jeans in the mail that reach the floor! 😁

My youngest sister is slightly shorter, 1-2cm, but we have the same length legs. I think she has given up on jeans.

@maddramaqueen Yeah, Europe has a real issue on this. It was even worse when I lived in France.

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@chaosmonkey Norwegians are also on average very tall, but that doesn't seem to translate into availability of clothes. Especially for tall women. It has gotten a lot more difficult to find long jeans the last couple of years too. The stores have stopped stocking them, and the webshops are always sold out. Not sure what the deal is.

Let's hope it benefits Ukraine at least.

Heh, Merriam-Webster's words of the week this week are rather easy to relate to the news cycle:

  1. billionaire
  2. hypocrisy
  3. implode
  4. implosion
  5. Rubicon
  6. submersible

With episode s02e02, Star Trek Strange New Worlds is mirroring TNG, and it is no small task to try to measure up to the TNG episode "The Measure of a Man", but they really pulled it off. It is a top notch Star Trek episode overall.

It did a much better job than DS9's attempt at a similarly themed episode, "Rules of Engagement", where Worf's bloodthirsty nature as a Klingon is put on trial.

Pet peeve: The phrase "Mac or PC".

  1. It implies that a Mac isn't a PC, which it absolutely is.

  2. It usually assumes that everything that isn't running a Mac OS is running Windows, which isn't true.

It is mostly annoying when we're talking about software/hardware/firmware compatibility, because when you're not using MacOS or Windows, it's often difficult to find out if you can use whatever the product is.

(Tech journalists really love this misclassification)

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@oli Absolutely, or variations thereof. I often have to dig though a lot of pages and links to find out exactly what something is compatible with. Most recently for a USB cryptographic device.

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@mjjzf Yeah, for the home desktop market, I'd say that Apple and Amiga were ahead of the curve.

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@oli Sometimes it says "Mac and Windows" which is at least a lot less ambiguous.

It still doesn't mean it doesn't work on Linux, it's just that the garbage software they bundle with it doesn't work, which is usually fine 😁
