    Sie bezeichnen es vornehm als "Finanzierung", wenn sie es selbst in Anspruch nehmen. Wenn es um etwas geht, dass der Allgemeinheit zugute kommt, sind es "Schulden".

    @hanshuebner es ist eine Finanzierung wenn es ein Investment ist. Es sind Schulden, wenn es nur Konsum ist. Die Frage ist, warum manche Dinge als Konsum gezählt werden, die realistischer betrachtet Investments sind.

    @acdha @mekkaokereke as a white German of recognisable noble heritage the stuff I am told sometimes is really harsh. People who openly endorse Hitler, concentration camps, enslavement of white non-jewish people, serfdom, all kinds of aristocratic ruling systems, absolute monarchs, eugenics, …

    There are far more people believing in the most freakish terrible political views than one might assume.

    The police shot a 63 year old man while trying to evict him from his home. The elderly man had been taken in by "sovereign citizen" conspiracy theories much to his son's frustration.

    These theories made him more vulnerable to police violence. He also may not have been mentally well.

    The house he was evicted from used to belong to his brother, but a corporation recently bought it for $25,000, then evicted him.

    This story is a nexus of senselessness.

    @futurebird it seems like a large group of mostly men that lose social standing as capable of caring for themselves financially members of society have this tantrum reaction of rather doubting the existence of state and society then accepting their own incapability of being economically viable members of it.

    They would even get enough welfare to live very meagrely, but the welfare experience is a bit degrading (to scare the workforce) and requires a certain degree of submission.

    @futurebird I also have the strong suspicion that the esoteric healing and health stuff serves a similar function for many women who aren’t taking seriously and being respected by society and men in particular.

    Most esoteric healing stuff comes from Germany and was invented in a time when France (the traditional archenemy) was hopelessly advanced, in many ways but also in science and in particular health science (think Pasteur) where it was hard to deny their superiority.

    @GossiTheDog it was really not a secret. All consultancies told you about the trade off between flexibility and price, most developers and all sysadmins knew about it as well as every business administration person worth a penny.

    I actually went to school with the real life relatives of the people who were written about in Crazy Rich Asians. It was weird because in my crazy capitalist country, we only had public schools (even for the ultra rich).

    I remember going there at 13 years old and being ultra confused that people were going to the Paris Fashion Week; that they really did have roads with their grandfathers’ names on them; that no one knew how money worked (people had like $600 allowances)

    @s3thi @skinnylatte thank you for sharing, that is very interesting, especially for someone like me who also comes from an area with multiple languages and different social value associated not just with the language but also with how you speak them. I tried to find examples of that neutral English accent on YouTube, but I could not, I was flooded with results selling language courses or ones about the transatlantic accent. Do you have some example for me to listen to?

    @SimonB @jon @Lenny_du_Nord but what if you rebuilt them to maybe run 250 in a country with lower labour cost. They must be worth more than scrap metal. All kinds of old trains are sold to other places and being refurbished there. Why should it be that different for old TGV? I think they mostly don’t want to sell them because they are afraid someone might run them in France. This should be illegal. Anticompetitive EU law is too weak on the train system.

    @Di4na @jon @Lenny_du_Nord the lack of documentation is very surprising though. How did that happen? I assumed Alstom and SNCF would have written down so much about these, especially as they were so breathtakingly new as a concept.

    @funkylab @Di4na @jon @Lenny_du_Nord I get your feedback and I don’t think it is easy. I think it would be unfeasible in the French legal framework. But maybe elsewhere, where it is easier to get a new train certified. That is all.

    Signs of collapse and signs of an ecological society emerging coexist right now, in my opinion. The news covers the scary parts, and we need to know, and not look away. But lets not miss the little shoots of a saner more connected ecological-social-economic system either. What's a hint of a life-sustaining society emerging you've seen of late?

    @mule_du_pape @Firlefanz @bethsawin it is absolutely an important aspect. Because our tariff system is ridiculously complicated and everything but monthly tickets are very expensive (think 3,50 € for a single ride). Basically ripping off everybody who is not local. So it gives you the good feeling, that you are covered and that your solidarity (giving and receiving) extends to other places and not just your hometown.

    Es spielt einfach überhaupt keine Rolle aus welchen Gründen jemand ein eBike fährt, es ist nichts verachtenswertes daran, selbst wenn man in Tour de France-Form wäre.

    I guess I'm going to have to learn how to make GPG work with (multiple) Yubikeys. (for Duplicity). I so despise GPG.

    (Want to back up a quantity of data off-site that would be uncomfortably expensive if I use something fancy like tarsnap, and anyway, last time I used tarsnap, my practices around key management was ... not great.)

    @recursive I used it in the past and it was pretty good and surprisingly comfortable. Especially the way grandfather/father/son was handled. I used local disks and backblaze as storage.

    I've always felt that I was terrible at languages because I couldn't master more than 2 Chinese dialects, forgetting that I could speak 4 languages! Many Malaysians are like this - unaware of their multilingual superpower.

    @liztai addendum: in Belgium I’m mostly referring to the area in the very east where German is widely spoken. It is bigger than the official maps, but languages are a delicate topic in Belgium, so the maps do not reflect the complete reality.
