From a personal tech perspective, one of the best decisions I ever made for myself was setting up a server to store my family pictures a decade ago. It's been absolutely rewarding to be in control of my own data, having data backups I can rely on, and a way to securely share files/media with others - all on my own replaceable/upgradable devices!

Someday I will stop typing :wq in other text editors / programs to save and quit my work.

Someday. That day, apparently, is not today.

@jzb I've managed to commit that, breaking some xml, and failing some tests more than once.

Back when everyone else was discovering Apple iPods, I rocked a "Dell DJ". I might have been the only one that bought one of those..

What devs imagine the bookmark feature is used for: Maintaining a list of posts you want to easily find in the future.

What mine actually represents: All the posts I've accidentally bookmarked while scrolling through my feed on my phone.

Switching to Fedora from Windows full-time on my main PC was one of the best decisions I've ever made.

@alexseifert Very glad I made this move as well! 😎

Did you know that the reason why many lizard marriages don't last is because so many of them are anole'd?

users, what do you think is the most intimidating or confusing part of someone first getting into Linux?

Where do you see people get stuck or dissuaded?

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@thestrangelet @codemonkeymike Just use the default btrfs on Fedora and you don't have to think about it beyond that. Whatever operating system or file system you use, always back up your stuff.

If it's a laptop, I definitely would encrypt it.

@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

It's surprisingly difficult to find options for laptops shipping or any other supported non-ChromeOS flavor of from the website.

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

It's not even in their OS search filters anymore 😔

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

The option definitely exists if you happen to know a model that supports it and take the time to hunt and peck for the option, but this is definitely a regression in the experience.

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@codemonkeymike I don't see any that ship Fedora by default. It looks like it's on select sub-models that offer a customize option, AFAICT.

@thefossguy @tuxedocomputers I'm still several months out from ordering an upgrade for my work ThinkPad (which I absolutely love), but Tuxedo is unfortunately not a registered vendor for my $DAYJOB, which doesn't make it impossible in my particular case, but it isn't a trivial consideration, either.

vwbusguy,

@thefossguy What I was really hunting for when I started down this rabbit hole is if the T14 Gen 6 supports with the new Qualcomm offering.

So far, I've yet to find info either way on that one.

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@thefossguy The current status is that is touting support for these Snapdragon X ARM procs and is shipping two laptops with them, but neither with a Linux option. 😕

@codemonkeymike @thefossguy Weird that we might get full mainline support for the Copilot+ machines before Raspberry Pi 5.

Me, watching a YouTube video of a guy explaining how donuts in Japan vs America are different and saying American donuts are for dessert and I don't have the heart to comment to let him know they're for breakfast.

Poll: Which clone of RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise ) are you using? Please boost for reach. TIA.

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@alihan_banan @nixCraft Correct. Fedora is the upstream of RHEL. RHEL and CentOS are based on Fedora.

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@PedroSC96 @nixCraft Nah. My home server runs Fedora. Fedora makes for an excellent server if you're OK with regularly upgrading it.

@jaiden @danirabbit @mattdm @lea I always sleep on the side/bed closest to the door because of some lingering sense of duty to be the first line of defense for a security event, but I do that even when traveling by myself.

I grew up around LEOs, so I'm similarly wired to sit in restaurants on the outside of a table, facing the entrance doors.
