Kids these days can't possibly appreciate what the internet was like before we had browser tabs.

The Osborne 1 was my first "portable" computer. If I'd tried swinging it like this, my arm would have come off in five minutes. It weighed almost 25 pounds.

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@sjvn I still have mine! It was out first family computer and is sitting on the desk next to my as I type. I also have "The Case for the Osbourne", which is a soft carrying case with a strap that makes it much easier to transport. I've taken it to work before like that.

@sjvn Very cool! And we're in the CP/M club together!

Is there a waypipe for MacOS? Like, a way to run something like the geany IDE hosted on a networked Linux VM over ssh on a MacBook.

Retrospective from a month with the 11 Ultra:

I'm now officially a fan of the Zenfone. It hits a certain sweet spot for me between the headphone jack, UI, camera, and battery life. It's the direction should have gone.

I don't like the larger size more than the size of the 9/10, but it is roughly the same size of my previous Samsung Galaxy Plus, so I can definitely live with it.

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

And I do like it more than my 8. It has the things I like about the Pixel, but offers polish in the areas where I don't. Like, you can have the same navigation button order every other Android phone but Pixel has. You can hold down the switcher button for a screenshot, etc.

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@SomeGadgetGuy Crazy to think that all of those features used to be standard. Ever since the Samsung Galaxy 7, it's been a consistent story of paying more for less, with Apple and Samsung leading the race to the bottom.

@SomeGadgetGuy Once they were well established as market leaders for their respective slices, they shifted from wow-ing with innovation to finding new ways to squeeze blood from a turnip and figuring out how to market-spin it after the fact.

Don't forget that phones used to have FM radio and universal TV remote control capabilities, too.

If you run , there is an option to minimize to system tray on close, and setting this option means you won't need to keep a window open in the background for your browser integrations to keep working.

@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

The world would be a different place right now if:

  • IBM had made the CP/M deal
  • IBM open sourced DB/2 circa 2000
  • IBM had made the Sun deal
  • Rackspace had stayed independent and OpenStack focused
  • Google hadn't open sourced Borg, aka Kubernetes
  • Netscape hadn't open sourced its browser code
  • UC hadn't open sourced and defended BSD
  • Daniel never wrote/published curl

Well, what was yours? 🤔

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@itsfoss I was migrating a server and went to change the docroot owner from apache to nginx. I meant to run:

chown -R nginx:nginx ./

What I actually ran was:

chown -R nginx:nginx /

This broke ssh and sudo. I was eventually able to recover it by getting into a recovery and reinstalling every rpm and manually fixing /etc leftovers from there. It was an early cloud server, so I didn't have physical access. This was back when support was worth the premium you paid for it.

Yesterday at Red Hat Summit @jorge and @cgwalters presented to a full house of Red Hat employees to walk through the state of atomic / image-based Linux and where we can go from here.

I haven't said it enough times, but I hope someone who needs it will get this message before it's too late.

  • Someone who has had to troubleshoot 3 failed RAID5's in the last week in his dayjob

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

I'm of the general opinion that the only RAID you should generally consider are 0 (YOLO mode), 1, and 10.

RAID5 and 6 are a crackhead playing the shell game with your storage. They use a bunch more IO and are more likely to incur simultaneous drive failures.

It's not guaranteed that RAID10 will survive 2 concurrent failures, but it is less likely for that scenario to happen to begin with.

No matter what you do, make regular backups. RAID is not a backup.

vwbusguy, (edited )
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@gsuberland @kemotep RAID6 adds even more IO to disk writes than RAID5, meaning a significant performance penalty and added stress. Like, if you're mostly reading static files and have good backups, sure, knock yourself out, but not ideal for production storage with regular write transactions, and especially relational databases.

@monospace The microphone picked it up over a conference call.

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@aburka I prefer tactile switches because I enjoy them more and generally type faster and more confidently with them vs linear quiet ones. Part of it I'm sure is an age thing, since I learned on old mechanical keyboards and used manual typewriters and there's a sort of auditory cued rhythm that comes with it, least you jam up the typewriter, that has never left me.

@bcon At home, I have a Das Keyboard 6 Professional with blue switches and because the keys are more deeply set in a bigger chassis, the noise is better contained than the Logitech blue switch one I have in the office.

@sesivany I have a MapBox API integration in my Nextcloud with Nextcloud Maps and it works pretty well. There is an open street map integration, IIRC, but it was less straightforward to setup last time I tried.
