Not gonna lie, might very soon end up giving a run for its money on domination. Mastodon is definitely more mature, but Calckey is innovating in key areas where Mastodon has definitively stagnated, like full account migrations between server instances, including posts.

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@gbraad It appears so!

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@eliasp @Joseph_of_Earth The other impressive thing is it's not just Calckey. They tout that they can import from Mastodon or other fediverse platforms as well.

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@jcrabapple @eliasp @Joseph_of_Earth That sounds like a Mastodon bug

have a layover in and have already rolled my eyes in the back of my head after

  • Cisco ad that says "If it's connected, its protected" showing some sort of IoT device. Which just no 🙅

  • man walking and talking on airpods saying "generative AI is really great at COBOL" which uhhh yeah another no from me on that

(90% sure he said COBOL)

🙄

@amye @paigerduty I love the creativity and thorough attention to detail you've put into this. Malicious, but not harmful, and with plausible deniability.

Y'all, America desperately needs to embrace the metric system.

Fer reals.

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@benjaminhollon @saramg 1kg = 2.2lb

It's much easier in the other direction. Similarly,

1" = 2.54cm

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@jimgoodall @saramg When the English and Aussies weigh themselves in "stone", which metric system are they using?

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@smellsofbikes @saramg Yeah, this is a thing. Cars in Canada used to have better mileage ratings than US cars, not because they were more efficient, but because their gallons were bigger.

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@feld @saramg @jfred @jimgoodall Where I grew up, we'd give both, like "they're 20 minutes away, about 5 mile how the crow flies"

(Country roads often don't take you straight to where you want to go)

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@saramg @lanodan @jimgoodall One thing that's always interesting to me is that I never hear Americans use the term "Imperial". You might rarely hear a Canadian gallon referred to as "Imperial" but we call it Standard (or US Standard). A hardware store person might ask you "Standard or Metric?" (if Metric is even an option for that tool).

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@saramg @lanodan @jimgoodall When people say stuff like "US needs to got off Imperial measurements", the first thought is "When did we adopt Canadian gallons" before I realize they're conflating US Standard and Imperial because the units have the same names.

One way to get notifications for life appears to be to file tickets about Daylight Savings Time related bugs in software libraries.

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

A commonly used nodejs library for handling timezones just never bothered to handle DST at all and just hard-coded the offsets, so twice a year, everything that depends on it that references a DST TZ gets off by one hour. I filed a bug about it back in March of 2019 and it remains an issue in that library to this day and other popular libraries still depend on it.

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@linux_mclinuxface I'll very gladly trade universal DST for universal healthcare.

Came back to work today with 64 notifications waiting on me. Sorry if that includes a request from you. I'm starting to work through things again this week.

Due to various gaps in APIs, SDKs, CLIs, etc., I still have some significant cloud service lifecycle management that happens through or scripts that run on a cron (or whenever someone remembers to run them). Like 99% of stuff is automated via Terraform, Ansible, Jenkins, etc., but there is some severe jank around the edges of absolutely everything on the internet.

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

And comments like these in the scripts to attempt to explain the ongoing crimes:

Fetch via gcloud since SDK method returns 403 for project endpoints

vwbusguy,

Me: I'm going to automate this tedious cloud thing.

IAM has entered the room.

Two core Unix-like utilities, sudo and su, are getting rewrites in Rust

AWS-backed group believes command is too central to the web to keep as-is.

My current headphones are really great and all (Sony MDR-7506) But using just one pair of headphones, it starts to feel same-y, and you can forget their strengths. I need to get more headphones with different sound characteristics.

What's everyone's favorite fairly inexpensive (under $100) headphones with really fun sound?

@OpenComputeDesign I recently got Lenovo X370 headphones and they sound great

My number one tip for people is to boost more!

Discovery sucks on Mastodon, which is partially by design, but it also means it’s hard to find new and interesting people here. If you see something cool, reach for that boost button as well!

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@matt This is a very useful tool for finding people by interests.

The clear message I am getting from Bluesky is that black people felt unsafe on mastodon. Black Twitter was a huge part of what made it special, and it's been notably absent on mastodon. I will be sad if mastodon loses to a less-open alternative because it couldn't figure out how to be welcoming to everyone.

All of the posts on Mastodon about how the Blue Sky team was silly for releasing a social media network in 2023 without blocking and moderation, even in private beta, and that the Blue Sky team should have known what would happen...

...are being written on Mastodon: a social media platform that in 2023, still doesn't take into account that Black users face a disproportionate amount of very specific types of abuse, and is missing key features that would make the Black population safer. 🙂🙃

@sickmatter @JessTheUnstill The real problem is when people stand in the way of others scratching said itch. Those with their itches scratched no longer feel the problem that those who haven't still feel.
