With help from outside influence groups, lawmakers work to ban action

"Idaho is one of several conservative states with bills this year aimed at prohibiting investment practices that use , or “environmental, social and governance” factors.

Senate Bill 1291 bans companies that do business with the state from boycotting energy industries, including , and the industry."

Idaho, being a very rural state (twice the land size of Pennsylvania, a sixth of the population of Pennsylvania), is strongly influenced by outside groups. Idaho used to be a lot more balanced and independent. Idaho is a good example of what happens when $’s allowed to dominate politics and institutions like the U.S. Electoral College and the U.S. Senate give outsized influence to rural states in national politics.

I’ve filled an extra wide tube with wet sand and connected it to my Dorymyrmex bureni colony’s outworld. This is to simulate the sandy soil where they dig deep nests in the wild. I hope they will start digging— if they do I’ll connect a little nest on the other end so they can move in. The tube is vertical and three feet long. I will update if they make progress.

The tube runs by the ants on the shelf below (Formica colony)

God, I love Drucker.

"Asked what a business is, the typical businessman is likely to answer "an organization that makes a profit". The typical economist is likely to give the same answer. This answer is not only false, it is irrelevant."

Anyone have a preferred tool for stripping 16-22 AWG stranded wire to a controlled, reproducible length?

wa7iut,
@wa7iut@mastodon.radio avatar

@azonenberg

I can strip 22 AWG with my teeth when I need to.

But I also like the Stripmaster, a newer one pictured, but I have my dad's from the 1940s that still works well.

Finally, for critical work, I like the "hot-wire" stripper. You can't nick the wire and cause weak spots with it.

The Jonard looks pretty nice.

I rarely am doing anything that requires that kind of precision. I'll ask my friends downstairs that do a lot of fancy connectors for NASA what they use and let you know.

wa7iut,
@wa7iut@mastodon.radio avatar

@azonenberg

The hot wire stripper I mentioned does have an adjustable stop so you can consistently strip wire ends. It would take developing some technique. I'm a little skeptical about hitting +/-0.15 mm strip length tolerance though.

It's worth noting that the $6Bn cost overruns on SLS boosters and engines—the overruns ALONE—probably cost more than the entire SpaceX Starship program (for a fully reusable launcher with a much larger payload), currently running at an est. $2-3Bn/year total vs. $25Bn/year for SLS: https://techcrunch.com/2023/07/13/congress-prepares-to-continue-throwing-money-at-nasas-space-launch-system/

Good morning everyone. :)

I hope your weekend is going awesome.

I’m having one of those days where I just don’t want to interact with anyone. It’s just one of those grey days. I will be alright.

But always be kind to others on this adventure of life.

Today we are gonna be talking about meteorites.

Meteorites are remnants of comets, asteroids, or meteoroids that survive their journey through the Earth's atmosphere and land on the Earth's surface. When meteorite enters our atmosphere, it experiences intense friction and heat, which can cause it to glow brightly and form a fireball, known as a meteor. This often leads to the meteoroid breaking apart, scattering meteorite fragments over a wide area. There are three types of meteorites: stony, iron, and stony-iron. Stony meteorites are the most common and mainly contain silicate minerals. Iron meteorites are very rare and consist mostly of metallic iron and nickel, while stony-iron meteorites contain equal parts metallic iron and silicates. The study of meteorites can provide valuable insights into the early solar system

I spent a week in Detroit a couple of years ago doing some work at Wayne State, I stayed at the Motor City Cassino and Hotel (where hosts put me 😂), the buffet was a fabulous place to people watch. It seemed like there was tremendous potential and entrepreneurial spirit in Detroit, but it’s not being used or is somehow stymied ☹️ I enjoyed my time there. Detroit should have a great future.

Assembling the trigger crossbar board over lunch.

Not thrilled with the paste print quality, very inconsistent. the top left corner was way too thick as the board flexed during printing, the middle BGA skipped some pads, and the WLCSP in the bottom right was near perfect.

These big boards bend too much in my paste fixture, I need to find a way to prevent that before I do any more boards of this scale.
