Trigger crossbar boards came in!

They arrived fine despite someone at the board shop fat fingering my address and trying to send them to "Guesten, WA"... A city that does not exist.

Street address and zip code were correct which i guess was enough for FedEx to figure out the intended destination lol.

The fact that PVA is deliberately being put into food products, as stated in the article, is of particular concern to me, beside the fact that it is going into the environment in cleaning products. Where is the research that informs us it is safe to eat the stuff? https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-02-08/new-york-city-considers-banning-laundry-dishwasher-pods?utm_source=website&utm_medium=share&utm_campaign=copy

I'm a bit of an absent minded professor and I legit did lose this banana in my desk drawer where I put it to eat later in the day. I didn't discover it again until years later when, by then, it gained this nice black patina. I'm a little surprised it never molded, just desiccated.

Back side of six SPE media converters going into the oven. Will be loading three as 100BaseT1 and three as 1000baseT1 so I can make mated pairs for testing plus one for a friend.

First board bug found already: the USB UART (FT234) is 0.45mm pitch DFN not 0.5mm.

Luckily it's only 12 pins so I should get away (barely) with it.

Does anyone know if there is a piece of test equipment that:

  • Is generally oscilloscope-esque (measures voltage over time)
  • Has a ton of channels. Eight or ten minimum, ideally significantly more
  • Has high-ish DC input impedance (tens of kΩ) and low AC impedance (50Ω)
  • Input range of at least +/- 12V, ideally up to 48V or more
  • Fairly low BW specs by scope standards, I need maybe 10 MHz and something under 100 Msps.
  • >8 bit vertical resolution would be nice

I don't want to have to build it, but I don't think it exists. A synchronized pair of Teledyne LeCroy WaveRunner 8000HD scopes with RP4060 active power rail probes would absolutely meet the requirement, but be exorbitantly expensive for the lower BW requirement here.

Use case is monitoring and verifying power rail ramp up/down behavior on a complex board that may have 10-20 different rails, each with requirements for ramp rate, on/off ordering, etc.

I reached for my digital calipers the other day, and they were flickering like an LCD in a horror movie. Unsurprisingly, I did not have spare LR44 disc batteries on hand.

I decided "Eff this. I never want to need my calipers and have them not work because some battery died." So, I ordered these. Mitutoyo is a brand known for good precision, but I couldn't bring myself to spend the $100 to $300‡ for their more precise ones. These were only $35.

‡ still unemployed

@photos_floues @nyrath @masukomi @_thegeoff

Don’t confuse quality with price, they’re not the same thing.

e.g. a disk drive in 1980 performed the same job as a disk drive today, yet a disk in 1980 cost about $80k in today’s $s (not a typo) and it would store only about 10 Megabytes. You can now get a 10 Terabyte drive for $200. And the quality/reliability of today’s drives is vastly better by any measure.

see “Quality is Free” by Philip Crosby or anything by Edwards Demming

@wa7iut@mastodon.radio avatar

@photos_floues @nyrath @masukomi @_thegeoff

The IBM PC came out in 1981, so people had them.

The way I understand your use of “quality” is related to skill as an artist. I’m sure I’d take mostly bad pictures with a Hasselblad whereas Ansel Adams would probably take fabulous pictures with an iPhone.

btw, If you want control of an iPhone camera similar to what you have in a film camera, there’s software app for that, e.g., ProCamera

wa7iut,
@wa7iut@mastodon.radio avatar

@masukomi @photos_floues

Absolutely! (planned obsolence, etc.)

But digital calipers… you certainly can get by without them. It does take more skill to use analog calipers. There is beauty in their design and some fairly deep math behind Vernier scales. The feeling of competence and understanding something deep plus the tactile feeling of the fine machined metal is a good feeling. I see why you like the analog. What quality means is probably more clear with them too.

wa7iut,
@wa7iut@mastodon.radio avatar

@masukomi @photos_floues

Yes, we used to work closely with a group in Bristol, England and the common language was a huge barrier. 😂

OTH, in manufacturing, there are pretty good and universal definitions, i.e., quality is conformance to requirements, not goodness.

Whole books have been written about this. Japan was the original leader in this approach back in the 80s. Edwards Deming was a hero in Japan long before it caught on here in the U.S.
