Good speech. sucks. The Democrats are still pathetic when it comes to serving the interests of the public compared to any other advanced nation.

"You can't go around making a better world for people. Only people can make a better world for people. Otherwise, it's just a cage."

I think the best we can do is try to help people think more clearly, have access to better information and engage with other opinions in good faith.

Kinda shocked (but happy) to hear the libertarians on the weekly podcast all speak well of . Yes, it would do wonders to fix our politics.

My read on is that they are effectively sucking the air out of the decentralization balloon, whether they intend to or not. On the tech side, the will prevent much decentralization from ever happening and divert the focus that was on development. On the culture side, they deter a critical mass from developing here, which we need to overwhelm the influence of our most annoying users and lure in the people most people want to follow and interact with.

Somebody clue me in on the recs and why so many on the left now reject their advice. Criticism (and mockery) of them is endless on the left but not even talked about anywhere else AFAIK. It reminds me of the right rejecting "science" from the early days of . It all fits the predictions of perfectly, that some will demand almost anything from society to keep even one more person healthy. We compromise for the greater good, even when that means more die.

Glad is here but the integration is still not great. I wonder how many people used it and then decided to join a native server once they realized they could keep/recreate the social graph they had over there.

Conservatives only seem to care about the homeless (beyond finding a way to get rid of them) and the paucity of social services, when they can use them to accuse Dem mayors and governors of caring more about immigrants.

Politicians/elites have always been full of shit but the truth couldn't get out. What's changed is the internet and social media. We now know so much more. But most people don't get this.

MAGA thinks these problems are new and we can tear it down and go back to the good old days (that were always a lie). Libertarians think we'd be better with no institutions. The establishment just wants everybody to STFU. The woke believe in perfecting the human heart.

Realism just demands a better civics.

Excessive/confusing moderation policy threatens the growth of the . In turn, this threatens the potential for the network to let the public decide what gets attention and how culture evolves, eliminating the stranglehold of big tech, corporate media and the influence of money via advertising. I'm starting to fear this might be intentional.

Server relationships need to be transparent and limitations based on harm to the network, not claims of misinfo or bad opinions.

A post with 2800 boosts and over 5k favorites, from a server that blocks a lot of other servers. Pretty cool.

Finding out about good stuff via word of mouth makes that stuff instantly cooler. It builds community. Something you share deeply with close friends is the best, but social media has this advantage over mass media. And decentralized social media takes it to another level above that.

I don't know how you can support and oppose abortion. AFAIK the process always leads to extra fetuses that die.

Switching from the closed corporate platforms to decentralized social media networks is a collective action problem. People lock each other in by continuing to be active there, especially celebrities and journalists and corporations and governments.

But we have a strategy for defeating lock-in. It's the model. We get people to commit to doing something if other people commit as well. Can we organize something like that for the ?

I want the public to take back control over what gets attention. I think that's required to have a working democracy. I think everyone replacing the programming decisions of corporate media and the algorithms of big tech with a decentralized social graph without ads is key. Our thinking will be influenced by others. The question is can we better control who will be doing that, so that it's varied and of the highest possible quality.

We should make the #DNC Convention in #Chicago a total shit show worse than 1968 if #Biden doesn't use all possible leverage to force some kind of one state solution with equal rights for all on #Israel.

NOTE: the Chicago area has the largest Palestinian population in the #uspol

Frozen are children now in . I used to get criticized for proposing the "ridiculous" hypothetical of if you had to choose, whether you'd save one crying baby or a thousand embryos. It has suddenly become law that you should obviously let the baby die.

#ElonMusk has deepened his feud with #MattTaibbi.

A message to all dissident lefties. The billionaires who claim to also hate the establishment are just jealous of their power. They want to take that ability to shape public opinion for themselves instead. They don't want the public to know what's most likely true and make their own decisions. That's an old school liberal idea. It's what media decentralization promises, advanced by the #fediverse, building on the WWW.
