"Undead Internet Theory"

「 The prevalence of bot traffic was observed across all sectors, with Gaming (57.2%) witnessing the most significant proportion of bad bot traffic. Simultaneously, Retail (24.4%), Travel (20.7%), and Financial Services (15.7%) experienced the highest volume of bot attacks 」

About time to add new photos to @blackjoy.

dragfyre,
@dragfyre@mastodon.sandwich.net avatar

Now the question is: Is it finally time to move @blackjoy off , give it a more functional and flexible codebase, and run it on my own box? 🤔 (And do I have enough time and energy to do it before I get distracted by IRL again?)

And this is done. Added around ten new questions to @pollbot, including one with a wide selection of random answers.

wiktor,

- since i dont see an option for subscribing whole server and i would love to be able to see some random stuff from certain server on my feed, would it be considered malicious if i would have a bot that would boost all post on such server? Or maybe there is more elegant solution apart from persuading all server’s users to use certain hashtags?

@74@101010.pl avatar

@wiktor some instances joined or are providing relays - exchanging all their public posts between relay-member instances.
Mastodon.radio provides its own relay: https://relay.fediverse.radio

For a trip down the memory lane, here's an interview I did for @botwiki back in 2018:

I notice spambots at newsmast.community have started reposting everything I write with certain hashtags.

I'm blocking the bots individually as they pop up, but I wonder if we need more concerted action for the entire site.

@botwiki Hi, could you please remove the Twitter reference on https://botwiki.org/bot/selfhelp_ebooks/? It's exclusively on Mastodon now and uses https://cheapbotstootsweet.com/ (Tracery). Also, it currently doesn't generate feedback.

Thank you!

In the last few days I've blocked 9 domains on my server. Before that I can't actually remember when I last blocked a domain, six months? Maybe even a year ago when I first installed the instance.
Is there any indication why this surge has happened?

At the bottom of this useful post, there is an explanation with further links

OK, so I got this close 🤏🏾 to getting @videodreams posting again. It downloads images properly and assembles them into a webm video file. But it seems like Mastodon's updated something because now I'm getting the attached HTTP 422 error when trying to post the file.

Nice to know that the code still works, though! I'll have to come back and figure out how to play nice with Mastodon.

dragfyre,
@dragfyre@mastodon.sandwich.net avatar

@halcy any thoughts on how to avoid this issue when posting media with Mastodon.py?

dragfyre,
@dragfyre@mastodon.sandwich.net avatar

The great thing is, the lessons learned in fixing @videodreams and creating @himawari_wpac will give me a chance to do the upgrade to @blackjoy that I've been meaning to do for so long. Woot.

The pushing propaganda.

No American worries about "warm water port". That is directly from russian doctrine (their obsession with obtaining ports in warmer waters, such as Mediterranean). We have toooooo many of them. russian doctrine and mil culture is filled with such references, exactly in that verbiage.

The bots are easy to identify

Lifecoach5000,
@Lifecoach5000@mastodon.social avatar

@faraiwe so do you think that actual account is a bot? Or maybe just someone parroting bot talking points.

woodpunk,

Top tip for anyone that needs to be on for work/business reasons, but wants to be left alone as much as possible.

Adding a ⭐ or other unexpected character to your name in your profile will break the and datascrapers that harvest contact information and use it to spam you on the site.

I've tested this over a few years and it definitely makes a huge difference.

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

I opened a ticket in Mastodon's repo to implement Twitter's "automated by" label.

Would anyone else find it useful?

ai6yr,

LOL, p*rn bots over on the birdsite have suddenly started randomly replying to posts about who you should seek financial advice and get financial planning help. I think they're supposed to change their profiles BEFORE hawking a new line of products...

"Wait, why is this skimpily clad woman who was telling me to subscribe to this site full of dirty pictures now trying to recommend I sign up for a financial planner and wisely spend my money?"

(went over there to check on a quote from a meteorologist who has not come over here :-(

Fuck 👏 off 👏 "stale" 👏 bots.

If you are a developer that uses these to automatically close issues that have been valid for months and conveniently rely on a response from ONE person in an ocean of other responses, please reconsider your life choices. If there were no other responses? Fine. That's on the person to reply. But the bot should immediately eject itself from the conversation the moment someone else chimes in. Closing issues like this seriously hurts discoverability for developers and users alike.

stefan,

I was quoted in this mediakompetent.de article, in German, which also talks a bit about my project @botwiki.

"The online platform botwiki.org documents that bots can also break up hardened discussions in comment columns and make people laugh . [...] The source codes for some of the more than 2,000 bots listed are freely available, so you can use them for your own projects"

https://mediakompetent.de/was-steckt-hinter-social-bots/

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

Here's the full quote, to expand a bit on one point I was trying to make:

"It is definitely good to be aware that some of the social media accounts you might come across, or even interact with, may be automated. But you won't necessarily be able to tell if the information or a meme is shared by a bot, or a real human being, who's either paid or doesn't engage in good faith. So focusing on the message itself is very important."

Anyone putting "learn to make creative bots" as their New Year's resolution?

https://botwiki.org/resource/guide/the-definitive-guide-to-creative-botmaking/

TruthSandwich,

I don't require approval for accounts to follow me, but I do pay attention.

In the last couple of weeks, I've noticed a few non-genuine accounts that I've had to block. Keep an eye out.

TruthSandwich,

@alexgranford

I don't necessarily know what their game is. Presumably, they're hoping I follow them back so that they can inject their scams into my stream.

In other cases, it's quite likely a throwaway account created by someone I blocked for cause, allowing them to monitor me and calls brigades.

Either way, if they're not real, I don't want to deal with them. I just block and move on.

TruthSandwich,

@Hey_Beth @alexgranford

I hadn't thought of that. Back on Ex-Twitter, the goal was always to influence people (or cheat them or intimidate them), not to drive them off the platform and onto another.

botwiki,
@botwiki@mastodon.social avatar

Someone researching the topic of "social bots and how they can become of use as a weapon for media literacy" reached out asking for examples of "bots fighting racism, hate speech etc".

Anything that comes to mind?

I've already shared more general links, like:

I'm making up new term: rate-limit anxiety (for APIs)

Context:

When CPython GitHub bots were still using personal access token, we were rate-limited to 5,000 requests per hour.

Now that both miss-islington and bedevere are GitHub Apps and accessing APIs using installation access token, the rate limit is increased, based on the number of users on the GitHub org , and capped at 12,500 requests per hour, relieving our rate-limit anxiety 😌
