Lemmy.link is a Lemmy server with a bot that reposts an RSS feed to Lemmy
interesting concept at https://lemmy.link/...
botwiki, (edited ) So, are you making Mastodon/fediverse bots yet?
dragfyre, OK, so I got this close 🤏🏾 to getting @videodreams posting again. It downloads images properly and assembles them into a webm video file. But it seems like Mastodon's updated something because now I'm getting the attached HTTP 422 error when trying to post the file.
Nice to know that the code still works, though! I'll have to come back and figure out how to play nice with Mastodon. #bots
dragfyre, @halcy any thoughts on how to avoid this issue when posting media with Mastodon.py?
dragfyre, The great thing is, the lessons learned in fixing @videodreams and creating @himawari_wpac will give me a chance to do the upgrade to @blackjoy that I've been meaning to do for so long. Woot. #bots
stefan, Botwiki, a site I made 8 years ago to catalogue creative online bots and collect resources for making them, is celebrating its anniversary today.
https://botwiki.org/blog/eight-years-of-botwiki
#botwiki #anniversary #EightYears #milestone #bots #CreativeBots
j3j5, @stefan Congrats!!! Great site full of resources and interesting creators/bots! 🎉 🎉 🎉
stefan, @j3j5 Thank you! And I mean it, I couldn't do this without creative folks like yourself, whose work I've wanted to celebrate and preserve.
stefan, I reduced the posting frequency of some of the bots I've made recently, so if you've avoided them before for being too noisy, consider giving them a try now!
dalereardon, @stefan Since you are experienced with bots do you know of any way that still works to repost a Twitter timeline over here on Mastodon? Thanks.
stefan, @dalereardon I haven't really touched Twitter's API in months. If I remember correctly, the API for writing is now free, and you have to pay for reading? If that's the case, you might just have to scrape the data.
Sorry I can't be more helpful.
#Bots #Facebook #Kurznachrichtendienst #Leselimit #MetaPlatforms #Spam #Threads #Twitter
florian, German @heiseonline War scheinbar die letzten 17 Jahre kein Problem
smial, German Der einzige SPAM, der mich auf Twitter nervt, ist die gesponsorte Werbung, die vo Elmo forciert wird...
stefan, NEW BOT ALERT:
@AltTextHealthCheck monitors and reports on the percent of images with Alt text.
After checking it out let me know:
Can I format the post better?
Is hourly too often? What would be a good cadence?
botwiki, @stefan @AltTextHealthCheck Nice! When you have a moment, would you be interested in adding it to https://botwiki.org/submit-your-bot?
stefan, This bot is not yet open source but it could be.
ATM it monitors the federated timeline on mastodon.social but very easily this could monitor the local timeline of your own instance.
it runs on node.js and needs rights to write some text files.
If this is something you would used let me know.
tero, So much for #CAPTCHA – #bots can do them quicker than humans • #TheRegister
"For distorted text fields, humans took 9-15 seconds with an accuracy of just 50-84 percent. Bots, on the other hand, beat the tests in less than a second with 99.8 percent accuracy."
https://www.theregister.com/2023/08/15/so_much_for_captcha_then/
root42, @tero what about anonymity?
tero, @root42, I believe the APIs can be used to only request specific datums, e.g. not request anything else but proof of humanness. If in some country that's not possible, which would be surprising, there can be a trusted platform provider who only relays attestation that a person is human.
stefan, A pair of new bots to liven up your home feed!
🐻 @bearcam: videos from Katmai National Park in Alaska, frequently featuring bears
🐠 @TropicalReefAquarium: a view from inside of a tropical reef aquarium in Long Beach, California
stefan, @bearcam @TropicalReefAquarium Typically I make bots that post only every 4-6 hours, but I figured since these are mostly live feeds, posting hourly makes sense? Easier to catch something interesting happening. Let me know what you think.
Also, a fun fact, adding these to https://botwiki.org brings the total number of bots on the site to 2,001 🎉
stefan, @kaasbaas @bearcam @TropicalReefAquarium Yes, but this is more about how often do the people who follow the bot want it to come up in their feed.
You might like a bot, but only want to see its posts once or twice a day.

Dorianix, German
WXFanatic, Good morning y'all
For those that weren't aware, IEMBot from Iowa State has come to the Fediverse officially. I'll leave it up to the bot maintainers whether or not they would rather continue running their own version which many of you are most likely already following.
Either way, the list of the bots maintained on the Fediverse by IA State can be found from the official site here https://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/projects/iembot/#bots
I appreciate all the bot maintainers. Thanks for all y'all have done! ❤️🤗
WXFanatic, RE: https://m.ai6yr.org/@WXFanatic/110814632427852371
I have updated the Mastodon links list to include a note on where to find said bots
https://rentry.co/wxlinks-mastodon
Big shoutout to @ai6yr and @lckrohjr for the instances beforehand as well as @akrherz and @GWESOfficial for the official migration!
technodad, @WXFanatic Don’t get me wrong, BTW: we all truly appreciate the work @akrherz has done to bring another instance of iembot feeds. If our X-perience has a lesson, we need multiple sources for critical information like IEM.
mozzie, Created a new bot this week that posts questions and answers from Yahoo! Answers (2005-2021) every hour.
Check it out here: @am_i_pragnent
🔁 Boosts Welcome! 🔁
stefan, I opened a ticket in Mastodon's repo to implement Twitter's "automated by" label.
https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/28994
Would anyone else find it useful?
stefan, @thisismissem Got it, that makes sense.
Should I then be writing an RFC somewhere instead?
thisismissem, @stefan for now not necessarily.. but otherwise a FEP would probably be the best approach
lydiaconwell,
lydiaconwell, @dragfyre I suppose it would have to rely on bot accounts self identifying I suppose.
But most bot accounts are open about what they are.
strypey, @lydiaconwell
> most bot accounts are open about what they areIf they're not, probably best to block them once identified, and maybe report them to the FediBlock folks too?
dragfyre, A new #introduction is needed for my #bots!
🤖 @xyzzy: Interactive text adventure that posts random scenarios.
🤖 @blackjoy: Images of black joy.
🤖 @pollbot: Random fedi polls twice a day.
🤖 @bahai: Regular quotes from the Bahá'í sacred writings.
🤖 @bahai: Digest of various Bahá'í news feeds. There're a lot more, but those are the main ones.
Bahais_Mexicali, Spanish @dragfyre yup
dragfyre, Spanish @Bahais_Mexicali Wow, that's amazing! Thanks for letting me know. Listen - if you wouldn't mind, could you let me know the names of all the people in the picture? That way I can annotate the picture, like I did in the video i just posted. If you find other photos like that, you can let me know about those as well :)
botwiki, Celebrating eight years of https://botmakers.org! 🥳🎉🤖
#bots #CreativeBots #CreativeCoding #botmakers #botwiki #community #anniversary #milestone
botwiki, German @schlauschlau @stefan Thank you!
NoraReed, @botwiki wow!
ViolaB, German Wie viele #Bots seid ihr hier?
Ist überhaupt noch jemand auf Mastodon aktiv?
TruthSandwich,
TruthSandwich, I don't necessarily know what their game is. Presumably, they're hoping I follow them back so that they can inject their scams into my stream.
In other cases, it's quite likely a throwaway account created by someone I blocked for cause, allowing them to monitor me and calls brigades.
Either way, if they're not real, I don't want to deal with them. I just block and move on.
TruthSandwich, I hadn't thought of that. Back on Ex-Twitter, the goal was always to influence people (or cheat them or intimidate them), not to drive them off the platform and onto another.
ai6yr, LOL, p*rn bots over on the birdsite have suddenly started randomly replying to posts about who you should seek financial advice and get financial planning help. I think they're supposed to change their profiles BEFORE hawking a new line of products...
"Wait, why is this skimpily clad woman who was telling me to subscribe to this site full of dirty pictures now trying to recommend I sign up for a financial planner and wisely spend my money?"
(went over there to check on a quote from a meteorologist who has not come over here :-(
me_valentijn, She just wants to make sure that you can afford to wear more clothes than she can 🤗
ai6yr, @me_valentijn 🤔 🤪 (actually an army of poor young ladies who can't afford clothing over there, LOL... it's all crypt*-scammers, p*rn-bots, right wing boneheads, and people scrambling to go viral nowadays... more so than it used to be, that is).
interesting concept at https://lemmy.link/...
dragfyre,
aris_tgd, @dragfyre @hamiltonian What does it do, compute the sum of your post's potential and kinetic energy?
dragfyre, @aris_tgd hahaha no, it draws a hamiltonian path maze. e.g.:
brunty,
beausimensen, @brunty I'm using Akismet for my forms. I haven't implemented custom spam/ham reporting yet but I want to. It's decent at detecting spam but isn't perfect. Better than requiring people solve problems, though!
brunty, @beausimensen looking at things for detecting bots on account registration / login currently
jgamble, The vast majority of the automated accounts that I follow are on the botsin.space instance.
But I'm always wondering if there's something else to follow, and I can't seem to find a way to list the #bots available.
Does #botsinspace have a way to provide a list of its bots?
refrag, @jgamble It's not perfect, but go here and click "from botsin.space only"
botwiki, @refrag @jgamble There's also https://botwiki.org/bots/fediverse-bots and @botwikirandomfediverse!
12pt9, @botwiki Hi, could you please remove the Twitter reference on https://botwiki.org/bot/selfhelp_ebooks/? It's exclusively on Mastodon now and uses https://cheapbotstootsweet.com/ (Tracery). Also, it currently doesn't generate feedback.
Thank you!
botwiki, Only 24% of image bots on botsin.space use alt text??

Come on, we can do better!
https://stefanbohacek.com/blog/creative-bots-and-accessibility/
#acessibility #AltText #botmakers #CreativeBots #ArtBots #BotsInSpace
botwiki, @muffinista I'd definitely not make it a rule that alt text is required for image bots, people will just end up posting garbage, but maybe it would be worth mentioning that it's useful when signing up for a new account?
