mozzie, Created a new bot this week that posts questions and answers from Yahoo! Answers (2005-2021) every hour.
Check it out here: @am_i_pragnent
🔁 Boosts Welcome! 🔁
dragfyre,
mariatta, I'm making up new term: rate-limit anxiety (for APIs)
Context:
When CPython GitHub bots were still using personal access token, we were rate-limited to 5,000 requests per hour.
Now that both miss-islington and bedevere are GitHub Apps and accessing APIs using installation access token, the rate limit is increased, based on the number of users on the GitHub org , and capped at 12,500 requests per hour, relieving our rate-limit anxiety 😌
brunty,
beausimensen, @brunty I'm using Akismet for my forms. I haven't implemented custom spam/ham reporting yet but I want to. It's decent at detecting spam but isn't perfect. Better than requiring people solve problems, though!
brunty, @beausimensen looking at things for detecting bots on account registration / login currently
mozzie, This October, my bot @eternalwanderer will post Halloween-themed pages from the Wayback Machine.
Be on the lookout for:
Caverns of Blood
Bongcheon-Dong Ghost
VRML Skeleton
Web 1.0 Haunted Houses
Club Penguin Rooms + Music
Spooky MIDI Music
Screamers
Garfield🔁 Boosts Welcome! 🔁
stefan, I reduced the posting frequency of some of the bots I've made recently, so if you've avoided them before for being too noisy, consider giving them a try now!
dalereardon, @stefan Since you are experienced with bots do you know of any way that still works to repost a Twitter timeline over here on Mastodon? Thanks.
stefan, @dalereardon I haven't really touched Twitter's API in months. If I remember correctly, the API for writing is now free, and you have to pay for reading? If that's the case, you might just have to scrape the data.
Sorry I can't be more helpful.
ralfbachmann, German
botwiki, German @ralfbachmann There's at least one. https://botwiki.org/bot/?networks=bluesky
sebobo, I’ve updated my blog post about blocking various "AI“ #bots from crawling your #NeosCMS website: https://mind-the-seb.de/blog/how-to-disallow-the-gptbot-from-crawling-your-neoscms-site
I've also decided to apply the same configuration to my own website.
botwiki, (edited ) So, are you making Mastodon/fediverse bots yet?
nickdrawthing, @botwiki I keep meaning to, but life gets in the way!

botwiki, German @schlauschlau @stefan Thank you!
NoraReed, @botwiki wow!
stefan, Please enjoy @underwater.
MadKane, I always illustrate the Limerick-Off Rhyme-Word with a limerick. In my current Limerick-Off, the Rhyme-Word is BOARD or BORED.
If you write your own BOARD or BORED-Rhyme limerick, please post it here, to be considered for the contest:

lydiaconwell,
lydiaconwell, @dragfyre I suppose it would have to rely on bot accounts self identifying I suppose.
But most bot accounts are open about what they are.
strypey, @lydiaconwell
> most bot accounts are open about what they areIf they're not, probably best to block them once identified, and maybe report them to the FediBlock folks too?
jalcine, There's quite a few bots for the open social Web I'd want to make:
- One that quotes Black radical literature and gives links on where to get those books
- One that publishes CC comics with ALT text and sources the creators
- An aggregator of content from labor movements like Workers World, Labor Notes and the like to help syndicate that information into Fedi.
What would you like to see?
botwiki, While lyrics and quote bots are not typically featured on Botwiki, these are still a fun introduction to the world of botmaking.
And with Pipedream, it’s super easy, with very little "coding" necessary.
tero, So much for #CAPTCHA – #bots can do them quicker than humans • #TheRegister
"For distorted text fields, humans took 9-15 seconds with an accuracy of just 50-84 percent. Bots, on the other hand, beat the tests in less than a second with 99.8 percent accuracy."
https://www.theregister.com/2023/08/15/so_much_for_captcha_then/
root42, @tero what about anonymity?
tero, @root42, I believe the APIs can be used to only request specific datums, e.g. not request anything else but proof of humanness. If in some country that's not possible, which would be surprising, there can be a trusted platform provider who only relays attestation that a person is human.
christen, i am so traumatized from #bots pretending to be #human on twitter that from now on i only want to follow accounts that are run by actual ppl, but idk what to believe now that checkmarks don't mean anything anymore. even on ppl's personal websites, ppl anonymize so much about their online presence now — i'm guessing out of fear of losing their jobs? that or their entire online presence revolves around their work & that's not what i'm looking for
br00t4c, Bots Are Better Than Humans At Cracking 'Are You a Robot?' Captcha Tests, Study Finds
dragonfrog, @br00t4c publications are usually brutal about describing a study but not linking to it, but they usually at least give you a hint. I finally found a different article that at least named an author, and from there the paper - it's the most recent work listed here

dragfyre,
aris_tgd, @dragfyre @hamiltonian What does it do, compute the sum of your post's potential and kinetic energy?
dragfyre, @aris_tgd hahaha no, it draws a hamiltonian path maze. e.g.:
WXFanatic, Good morning y'all
For those that weren't aware, IEMBot from Iowa State has come to the Fediverse officially. I'll leave it up to the bot maintainers whether or not they would rather continue running their own version which many of you are most likely already following.
Either way, the list of the bots maintained on the Fediverse by IA State can be found from the official site here https://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/projects/iembot/#bots
I appreciate all the bot maintainers. Thanks for all y'all have done! ❤️🤗
WXFanatic, RE: https://m.ai6yr.org/@WXFanatic/110814632427852371
I have updated the Mastodon links list to include a note on where to find said bots
https://rentry.co/wxlinks-mastodon
Big shoutout to @ai6yr and @lckrohjr for the instances beforehand as well as @akrherz and @GWESOfficial for the official migration!
technodad, @WXFanatic Don’t get me wrong, BTW: we all truly appreciate the work @akrherz has done to bring another instance of iembot feeds. If our X-perience has a lesson, we need multiple sources for critical information like IEM.
stefan, Here's a few bots I've set up recently, for you to enjoy!

🌍 @iss

stefan, NEW BOT ALERT:
@AltTextHealthCheck monitors and reports on the percent of images with Alt text.
After checking it out let me know:
Can I format the post better?
Is hourly too often? What would be a good cadence?
botwiki, @stefan @AltTextHealthCheck Nice! When you have a moment, would you be interested in adding it to https://botwiki.org/submit-your-bot?
stefan, This bot is not yet open source but it could be.
ATM it monitors the federated timeline on mastodon.social but very easily this could monitor the local timeline of your own instance.
it runs on node.js and needs rights to write some text files.
If this is something you would used let me know.
dragfyre, 2023 is the year that @vgan and @WeavingWithAI get together and make a bot-baby that makes people guess the prompts used to create an AI art image #bots #AIArt #botmakers
dragfyre, And yes I'm only saying that because I'm too busy to make it on my own :P
