DJ Hairy Larry Presents NJHB Playing Colossus
From The Archives Of Something Blue 2024-03-31

https://sbblues.com/2024/03/31/dj-hairy-larry-presents-njhb-playing-colossus/

Thanks Marty, Today we're going to hear a radio edit of one of NJHB's most played songs.

NJHB had their first recording session at HairyLarryLand on December 29, 2012. From that session we released our first album, "Circular Logic" that included my song "Colossus".

In 2013 we were the New Jazz House Band playing once a month at TheArts@311 in downtown Jonesboro. Every month the personnel varied and every month we released another album.

On February 2, 2012, we recorded the album "Colossus", with the cover art showing the Colossus Of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

Then on July 6, 2013, we recorded our most accessible album, "Cookin' For Piper" and we closed the show with "Colossus".

A terrific jazz performance by Julian Lage and band, filmed at SFJAZZ on January 20, 2024. Spotlight On alumnus Kris Davis is on the piano, delivering an especially fiery solo near the end:

One of my very favorite New Orleans bands, the New Orleans Klezmer All Stars, have a new LP out next month. If you ever have an opportunity to see them live, you will not be disappointed. Incredible energy and just a non-stop dance party.

"Born in 1924 in Newark, N.J., Vaughan came up in the '40s, alongside bebop, a new jazz style she instantly took to. In the following decades, she proved to be one of the best singers of any genre."

When I watch people dance at jazz gigs, I always wonder how they handle the amount of physical contact typically involved in swing dancing.
It’s not an activity I’d be able to navigate or handle myself.
I always like to see people dance to my music, though.

@dmbaturin heh, anytime I see Hellzapoppin' style Lindy Hop I wonder how anyone survives unscathed

My pick for today is Kandace Springs (born January 17, 1989) is an American jazz and soul singer and pianist. She has released four studio albums.

When it comes to Funky Herbie, this is my favorite. And the track ‘Hang Up Your Hangups’ is the funkiest of them all.

@digginjazz an incredible track. I have to go with Hidden Shadows above all but there are a lot of good answers

At 86 years old, Charles Lloyd is as vibrant, creative and active as ever. I've seen him several times over the last decade, and his performances are always memorable. Here is a great article about this master.

Late-Period Art Pepper Box Sets

It is fitting that Art Pepper’s late and most productive period enjoyed this degree of documentation. Marginalized during the majority of his haphazard career, Pepper rose above the resistance to be recognized as a true original.

https://www.allaboutjazz.com/late-period-art-pepper-box-sets-art-pepper

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@aaj yeah, Pepper was a messed up guy with an ugly story. But his last act had some grace, though it was crippled by his problems booking gigs and getting sidemen due to his history. In addition to some really interesting material like The Trip he became one of the all time great ballad players in that last decade of recordings. His solos on material like Over The Rainbow and Nature Boy are quite sublime and highly recommended

thesizzler,
@thesizzler@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely Can you recommend some solid studio work of Art's from this era? I'm really only familiar with + Eleven and Meets the Rhythm Section (both of which I love).
