The sit down version of Spy Hunter was particularly cool, not least because of the speakers blasting the theme from Peter Gunn right by your head, but the upright cabinet was far more common. I spent a lot of time playing this game very, very badly.

Apollo 13 has a lot going on. One feature the players rarely get to see is the magnetic moon that captures balls. A lot of owners, yours truly included, have noticed no matter how special balls you use in the game, you'll end up with 13 fridge magnets very soon if the moon is in use. Here you can see it temporarily activated for cleaning. It has no major effect for gameplay, the balls just get returned to inlane instead of plungerlane.

View or Apollo 13 pinball machine's playfield. A moon shaped magnetic toy captures a ball going past it on a ramp, lifts it up and drops it onto a hole on the other side.

apzpins,
@apzpins@mstdn.games avatar

@davespice There are balls for this purpose, but this machine appears to use such a powerful magnet that even those will become magnetized in a lot shorter period than in other games.

I can only assume they used way too powerful magnet there, possibly to ensure they'd grab the ball that's screaming past the moon. This pinball platform can do PWM, but it only appeared in later revisions so this one will always drive the magnet at full blast.

davespice,
@davespice@mas.to avatar

@apzpins yeah, probably would've been better with a mechanical solution and a weaker magnet

Continuing to play Ketsui on PS4 and loving every minute of it.
I'm confident that I'll be able to platinum it as well, which is the last thing I was expecting to say about a Cave game. 😂

I decided to go back to the PS3 version to unlock some trophies there as well as I mainly played on 360 back then. My 360 games are in storage right now though.

I forgot how much fun the X Mode was in this release.
Again, highly recommend both versions.

Phelpssan,
@Phelpssan@mastodon.social avatar

@OutofPrintArchive I suspect it was just a matter of timing.

Dangun Feveron and Battle Garegga were released before the Switch was out, so it's easy to explain why they never made it to that console.

The other two were released after that, but most likely were already under development targeting only the PS4.

OutofPrintArchive,
@OutofPrintArchive@mstdn.games avatar

@Phelpssan
Oh, that’s right. I had completely forgotten about that.
I bought Dangun Feveron and Battle Garegga on Xbox but they sold so incredibly poorly, that M2 abandoned the platform and shifted towards the Switch.
Which, looking back at the incredible run it has had, and the stupid amount of shooting games that I got, was the perfect decision. 😊

GoemonIshikawa,

Oh man, this shit is cool!
When you're that loving of your project and the things that made it good, you will do what you can to preserve the old arcade sound.
Quote by Andy Hofle: the author.
"The arcade ambience project is an attempt of mine to simulate the audio ambience of a crowded arcade room during the golden age of arcades in the 1980s. This is a sound I think that has been lost over the years and does not exist in today's pitiful arcades in my opinion. My main motivation for this project was to create some ambience in my basement arcade, having a somewhat authentic arcade background hum while I or my guests play on my MAME arcade cabinet. I thought that maybe others who have cabinets (or just miss real arcade nostalgia) could also benefit from my work."

Bubble Memory
systems are interesting.

Bootup has two steps - first is warming up the bubble memory chip on the cartridge, then there’s a song and countdown as the entire program is copied from the bubble memory card to system RAM.

Gotta ask people here if they’ve ever seen or used bubble memory in other applications. It was a short lived media that was replaced by “typical” ROM chips.

A new sculpture appeared in Flatiron South Pacific Plaza in New York this week, but it’s not your typical artwork. Instead, it allows people in NYC to interact with people in Dublin via video, in real time.

"The Portal" has an 8-foot screen and an always-on video link between the two countries, with security a “key consideration” for New York City before approving the project. Here’s more from @TechCrunch.

Back in the days the manufacturers were throwing a lot of shit at the wall, seeing what sticks. Some ideas we weird, some were wacky, some we just accept as one of those "but that's how pinball has always been!". Here's Chicago Coin's Big Flipper and its "Jumbo flippers". They're about twice as large as normal flipper you know today. Technically they were moved from the middle, not from the shaft like normal flippers. And yes, these were definitely in the that's weird category.

Closer view of Big Flipper's flippers. They are labeled "Jumbo Flipper". There's an adult male hand for scale on the glass, the flippers are longer than the hand's palm.

We need to stop buying into the way these companies conceal the service they provide behind the ordering app they give us to initiate a service. Uber Eats isn't a type of app, any more than it's a type of car. It's a delivery company that uses apps and cars to provide a service. One restaurants, drivers and customers all pay for in different ways, so the owner can cream off pure profit.

@LouisIngenthron It's everywhere these days, from studios using it to promote their movies, to movie "journalists" who believe it and parrot it, to audiences who wrongly think they can always spot CGI and "that's why movies used to be better before." It's a vicious circle.

Time to raise the playfield and take a look. My initial reaction is amusement - I have never seen a low mileage EM game like this. After probing around, I have a hunch that this thing might fire up with very minimal work.

View from under the playfield and inside the cabinet of an electronmechanical pinball machine. Long banks of relays, stepping units, motors and other electro-mechanical units are seen.
