This video is a short clip from a video taken a number of years ago in the mountains- the sun hit the water in a way that dazzled the camera sensor, creating this effect of purple rain!
If you are old like me, or a Prince fan, purple rain is going to make you think of his big hit by that name! Do you think this was a message?? 😆

@NatureMC I noticed it a little on another video from the same day.. this was my old camera, I haven't noticed anything like this with the current one, though I haven't been in the mountains for a long time, and don't often come near running water...lol

I had another meltdown in public today. 🤦‍♀️

Just doing my bit to lower the bar for what "normal" looks like in the outside world. 🤷‍♀️

So yay me! 🎉

And a song for all o' ya'll out there fucking up for the public good. 💖

@vlrny Hope you're feeling a little better now. A big problem with people being able to get by is other people worrying about what that should look like! Screw 'normal' ;)

I started this collage for Six on Saturday, didn't finish (work days) then thought I'd add one more image and make - I finished yesterday but by night had no oomph to post! Now it might be !
I already had the square edits for 6, so I made it vertical with the 7th- is this shape ok for people to view? Is it good on phones? I only use laptop, so I always prefer landscape orientation images... details in alt /replies

I felt quite childish at first when I interviewed an ant for my podcast. I've just seen that the French health insurance chatbot is a grinning ant. Remember: ants are cool!

cohanf,
@cohanf@mastodon.online avatar

@NatureMC Since ants are the dominant life form on the planet, seems reasonable to interview one!

I had been in a department for printed books (which are very expensive in France) for ages. It's a pain to search shelves where you can't type in a search term or title! 😂
So many non-fiction books cutely laid out, with umpteen different colourful fonts (where is the design god of revenge?), but hardly any content. Many magazines offer more. Or two tutorials on youtube. There was a terrible Harry Potter hype and two shelves of cooking books. I haven't bought a book. 😞

cohanf,
@cohanf@mastodon.online avatar

@NatureMC was this in a store?

cohanf,
@cohanf@mastodon.online avatar

@NatureMC sad to hear. I guess with the changing market for books, they are trying (desperately? unsuccessfully? ) to adapt :( I haven't been to a book store in ages- not that I might not like to, but no funds to buy books and I'd have to go to the small city 40 miles away- we used to go semi often, haven't been there in a year or two...

cohanf,
@cohanf@mastodon.online avatar

@NatureMC There is a library in the town where I work, but I am in town only to work and then buy groceries...lol I'm not the driver, so no lingering! I was starting to think about looking at what books the library has online, then going in person just to pick them up, then covid came along with further reduction in my public activities (my work is extreme exposure, so then just grocery shopping, and nothing else!).. Prob if I live in or near a town in the future all that will change.

cohanf,
@cohanf@mastodon.online avatar

@NatureMC do you actually read while in the library, or take the book home to read? (It's been many many years since I was in a library, but in past here you could of course sit while the library is open and certain specialty books and magazines could not be taken out, but for regular books etc you could take them home for a week or two, whatever it is).

cohanf,
@cohanf@mastodon.online avatar

@NatureMC Certainly in the big cities they would have all of those things in libraries also-- even many years ago they had a lot of it. Probably the small town one has some of it, they also can get materials from other branches. It's not possible for me to spend time there in person, but I presume at least some of the stuff could be pre-reserved online.

Did you know that the oldest known #adhesive was also chewing gum?

#Birch tar is in its simplest form, burned birch #bark. It forms a sticky black pitch that can be used as glue.

Evidence for #human (& #Neanderthal) use has been dated to 200k or the Old #Stone Age.

Birch tar is also a disinfectant & it has been found as a chewing gum in various locations in Europe.

One birch gum piece from 5700 yrs ago, contained a complete human #genome of a woman.

@mythologyandhistory I've known of this substance from archaeological mentions, but never stopped to wonder if it might be easy to make- I've wanted a good durable natural adhesive for certain kinds of art projects.....

@NatureMC I've long wanted to play with this idea, but haven't really done it yet. When I was in Mexico, there were (I forget what they called them) -protective boards, like small canvas boards for painting, then all kinds of things- crosses, buddha, virgin mary, horse shoes etc all stuck to the board, and the whole thing shrink wrapped in plastic! Various combinations of items for various concerns. I bought one :)

cohanf,
@cohanf@mastodon.online avatar

@NatureMC more like the nichos, (still haven't remembered what they were calling them, if I even knew at the time!) -but like I said- the items glued to a canvas board, then shrink-wrapped in plastic. Yes, the combination of Catholic and everything else was the especially interesting part! I have more to say about the market where I bought it, but time to get ready for work..lol

cohanf,
@cohanf@mastodon.online avatar

@NatureMC Well- my school had nothing even close to this...lol

cohanf,
@cohanf@mastodon.online avatar

@NatureMC a very different relationship with history and with human remains! Growing up here, there weren't even old buildings! I did have a connection to the past through stone tools- arrow , spear points, scrapers etc from earlier indigenous inhabitants, that we would find in the fields! But I don't think I saw a single human bone! Now animal remains is another story!

1)Some blab, videos + photos of a couple of tropical plants that I had to rescue- from me! I had a bit too much to say about soils, watering, etc, so I made a blog post with the 2 videos + a bonus vid of a flowering cactus.
I'm testing Wordpress, so I posted the same thing there and at blogger. The videos are on YouTube, Spectra links in replies.

Semi close view of backlit leaves of Peperomia albovittata Piccolo Banda. From this direction, in this light, the almost heart-shaped leaves appear medium green with blood red venation. At this stage of growth, the leaves are coming nearly from the soil with very little stem.
Murdannia loriformis Bright Star a small plant with strap shaped leaves that taper to a point, a bit wider in middle. they are a medium slightly yellow-green with a wide band across the centre of silver-grey-green. Leaves come from a central rosette with a short stem and new rosettes come from the base. I has a delicate branched flowering stem with one tiny open white flower and a number of buds. Around the base of the plant are tiny green leaves with red reverse, the sprawling stems of Peperomia verticillata. Most of the plant is in shade, with a shaft of sunlight hitting the foremost leaf in the centre, and the open flower.

My Hoya linearis, that is hanging in the garden all summer, usually blooms when I take it inside in the autumn when the night temperature reaches about 5°C.

This year it has decided that now is the time. It actually suits me well because the flowers are too heavily perfumed for my bedroom.

Now I'm keen to see if there are any Danish night insects that take interest in the flowers, so that I may have some seeds. It would be great to start a new pot from seeds, wouldn't it.
