mistersql,
lewiscowles1986, @mistersql surely if it's protocol compatible, then they would have to break both redis-py and their own redis clients to pull-off breaking though? Gotta be done slowly, like MySQL 8 and MariaDB
sjvn, Valkey is Rapidly Overtaking Redis - http://DevOps.com https://devops.com/valkey-is-rapidly-overtaking-redis/ by @sjvn
Both #Redis developers and customers are leaving Redis behind and moving to the new #opensource #Valkey fork. #OSSummit
louis, TIL There is a Redis replacement with persistency based on SQLite, written in Go.
horovits, Remember I said the community will gather behind a #Redis fork to keep it #opensource, and that #Valkey is a strong candidate?
It's continuing to gain momentum, and just added more major corp partners incl. Aiven, Alibaba Cloud, Chainguard, Heroku, Huawei, Percona, and Verizon. Check out the @linuxfoundation announcement here: https://www.linuxfoundation.org/press/valkey-community-announces-release-candidate-amid-growing-support-for-open-source-data-store
#Valkey is also going full steam, reaching GENERAL AVAILABILITY just a couple of weeks after the fork announcement:
https://github.com/valkey-io/valkey/releases
anderseknert, @horovits Which is why it's good to have alternatives :)
Badscrew, @anderseknert @horovits but this IS competition
thejtoken, Wow! An implementation of a few #redis types over #SQLite, I'm really impressed how awesome is the #SQLite the change of license is pushing the #OSS community to find interesting alternatives https://github.com/nalgeon/redka

jonathanspw, YARF! Yet Another Redis Fork.
In today's edition we have Valkey! Valkey is backed by the Linux Foundation and a large number of Redis contributors have moved to Valkey.
Packages are built for Fedora and EPEL.

M4rkF, @jonathanspw Do you know if this is intended to be a drop-in replacement?
jonathanspw, @M4rkF indeed it is!
brennansv, The whole Redis fiasco has resulted in Valkey emerging which will likely leave Redis behind with MongoDB and MySQL which were also taken over by companies which tried to monetize them. Long story short, a VC back company assumed control of the Redis project which was Open Source and promised the project creator to keep it that way, but broke that promise. It has been forked and major cloud companies are funding the fork which is called Valkey. #Redis #Valkey
brennansv, Here is one breakdown. https://youtu.be/ot6bNg-nZ3M?si=CV-W5xNtwd07Znl_
linux_mclinuxface, I published a blog post on #Valkey at AWS.
"#Redis broke with the community that helped it grow and left them stranded. This community is now unbound and will continue to use and contribute to the project as they have always done, and with more freedom. "
https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/opensource/why-aws-supports-valkey/
karppinen, There’s a combo hot take brewing in my head about the #xz and #redis debacles.
It goes something like:
When the shit hits the fan and part of the reason appears to be an overworked and underpaid maintainer, lots of people come out of the woodwork to demand more respect and money for them.
But when a maintainer recognizes that they’re in an unsustainable situation and dares to make a proactive change, well FUCK THAT GUY. WHO THE HELL DOES HE THINK HE IS?
kytta, (edited ) I haven’t talked about the whole #Redis situation when it happened, but I really have to get my thoughts out on this. Better late than never, I guess.
https://www.kytta.dev/blog/redis-were-right/
Stick to the end of the post for a special announcement from my side.
kytta, @verbumfeit of course, how could I forget, thanks for the tip!
verbumfeit, (edited ) @kytta I thank you for your integrity.
jbzfn, Fork it, ship it (?)
「Industry participants, including Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud, Oracle, Ericsson, and Snap Inc. are supporting Valkey. They are focused on making contributions that support the long-term health and viability of the project so that everyone can benefit from it」
schizanon, As far as I'm concerned, Redis has been renamed to Valkey, while Redis Ltd. has created a non-free fork and confusingly named it "Redis".
drewdevault, Migration guide for #Redis => #Redict for downstream distributions, feedback welcome:
https://redict.io/docs/redis-compat/package/
We're expecting the first release to be ready by early next week.
bartavi, @drewdevault "It is also possible to have two users, “redis” and “redict”, with the same uid and gid."
WHAT?! How?
drewdevault, @bartavi just put both of them in /etc/passwd with the same uid
lupyuen, "Linux Foundation announced its intent to form Valkey, an open source alternative to the #Redis in-memory, NoSQL data store ... in response to the recent license change announced by Redis"
https://www.linuxfoundation.org/press/linux-foundation-launches-open-source-valkey-community
webmink, Almost without skipping a beat, the Linux Foundation has forked #Redis following the betrayal of its community.
https://www.linuxfoundation.org/press/linux-foundation-launches-open-source-valkey-community
jaschop, @webmink
Interesting to see two projects take Redis into two different directions:
Valkey with a permissive license and industry support
Redict with the LGPL and based on Codeberg
Good showcase of different movements within the OS scene, imo.
pylapp, Redis is not longer open source as it moves from BSD to a double license with SSPL v1 and RSALv2.
https://redis.com/blog/redis-adopts-dual-source-available-licensing/
viktor, 3 serious forks of #Redis to watch:
Mutli-threaded fork of Redis based on Redis 6.
BSD 3 Clause license.
Owned by Snapchat.
https://github.com/Snapchat/KeyDBRecent fork by one person based on the last open source version of Redis 7.2.4.
On Codeberg.
LGPL 3.0 license.
https://codeberg.org/redict/redictPlaceholderKV (searching for name)
Started by former Redis contributor(s) and AWS employees.
BSD 3 Clause license.
https://github.com/placeholderkv/placeholderkvBoosts appreciated 🙏
jonathanspw, And now @realkeydb builds are in Bodhi for all supported @fedora versions and EPEL 8/9 and ready for testing.
Good alternative and potential replacement to #redis
https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/?search=keydb-6.3.4-2
kushal, @jonathanspw @fedora We have to wait for https://github.com/placeholderkv/placeholderkv to choose a name and get packaged.
jonathanspw,
jer, ok, after all that #redis kerfuffle let's have some fun:
Who built a Redis-like cache/data store/database (maybe protocol compatible?) for fun or shit-posting?
May that be in bash, awk, storing data in DNS, ...
Share your silly project!
janl, @jer 15 years ago: https://github.com/janl/awesome
CGM, @jer Perhaps it's worth pointing out that Redis itself started life as a prototype hacked up in Tcl, see https://gist.github.com/antirez/6ca04dd191bdb82aad9fb241013e88a8
#redis #tcl #tcltk
happyborg, (edited )
rvr, Spanish @happyborg @JRepin I don’t understand the argument. GPL doesn’t stop the copyright holder changing their mind and closing future releases.

andypiper, Good read on the history of what happened to #Redis https://www.gomomento.com/blog/rip-redis-how-garantia-data-pulled-off-the-biggest-heist-in-open-source-history
