The editors of Scientific American have written an opinion piece saying we need to move away from #cars to #activetransport because of local & carbon #pollution, road crash death & injury and how it restricts access to life for so many- the young, the elderly, the poor & disabled. #ClimateCrisis#ClimateChange
@CernBasher did write a thorough analysis that I recommend in your attention. I want to take a critical look at his predictions and discuss the nuanced realities of such a transformative technology.

Robotaxis may reduce our need for parking, opening space for greener, more livable cities. Yet, they could increase traffic with empty rides. Let's embrace this flexibility, maybe favoring bicycles for shorter trips.
Boost walking and cycling in towns and cities, urges UK government adviser
“Cars particularly destroy the liberty of the child and the teenager to move around safely,” it said. “Children are much less free now than they were 50 or 100 years ago, a fact which changes the nature and vitality of our towns.”
For #FollowFriday a few of us would like to follow anyone interested in #bikes. Is there a list of such accounts? If you like or boost, you will certainly get a follow from me.
If you @-mention them in your post, they'll re-toot it and those following them will see your post. And if you follow them you'll see when others @-mention them in their posts. #bikes#bicycles#cycling#ActiveMobility#ActiveTransport
“What a day! We attended Coburg North Food Swap, lunch opposite Brunswick Town Hall, attended the Socialist Alliance end of year picnic, popped into the Merri-bek Council Library futures free Palestine space at the Old Coburg station, sat down with the Melbourne Anarchist Communist picnic, then attended Coburg Night Market. Dad met and spoke with Pascoe Vale Labor MP Anthony Cianflone at Coburg Night Market on Gas Substitution Roadmap Update.
"We also stopped for a photo at Merribek Primary school on Moreland Road for the great mural telling a macro and micro story about the Merri region.
“Quite a political education in networking with different groups on the progressive side of politics. We remain in awe of Dad.
“Last week it was an education in climate civil disobedience, this Saturday on political networking.
It follows a meeting with Federal MP Peter Khalil yesterday morning discussing #COP28 outcomes and Australian climate policy specific actions on Fossil Fuel subsidies, Active Transport, reducing fugitive methane emissions from the energy sector. Yes, we were in the meeting on Dad’s lap holding our bark!” #Merribek#ChihuahuasForClimateAction#FossilFuels#ActiveTransport
@mbonsma@isaacfreeman Except I hope for disabled people and their drivers if they're not the drivers themselves. My conditions are mild enough to let me walk to a bus stop and travel into a citythat way. Some disabled people can only go into a city, e,g, for a medical appointment, if there is vehicle access and a nearby carpark.
Rather than make it harder to drive cars, why not make it easier and cheaper to use #PublicTransport and #ActiveTransport including walking and cycling in cities?
@timrichards
Parallel parking often is the cause of holding up traffic and trams on #SydneyRoad in #Coburg and #Brunswick. There are thousands of car parks in off street car parking close to Sydney Rd. Victorian State Government is dragging its heels in removing parking, implementing protected bike lanes, accessible tram stops and enlarging footpath space for pedestrians, cafes, and street vegetation making a more liveable, enjoyable shopping environment.. #ActiveTransport#Liveability#accessibleTrams
A growing number of Australian households are ditching cars for e-bikes but there are hardly any bike lanes.
"Cycling groups criticised the investment in active transport in the recent New South Wales budget, noting it was dwarfed by the broader infrastructure spend and under Climate Council recommendations."
A global study reveals that Dutch residents are the most physically active on earth, getting 12.8 hours of exercise each week. The key—designing activity into daily life. The average #Dutch person cycles about 1,098 kilometers per year.
@BrentToderian
I have averaged 18.2km cycling per day over the last year. It has kept my weight stable and Type 2 diabetes in remission. I do most of my shopping by bicycle, and take my two Chihuahuas to explore the cafes and bikepaths of #Merribek in #Naarm (Melbourne) #ActiveTransport provides major health co-benefits as well as reducing personal carbon footprint and #TransportEmissions #BikeTooter
"Legislative advocacy to address environmental and urban design factors that impact pedestrian safety. Pediatricians can work with local, state, or federal lawmakers to do the following..." (1/)
"b. Support, or introduce and promote, community-level #VisionZero interventions."
c. Support, or introduce and promote, #SafeRoutesToSchool interventions.
d. Promote safe and #ActiveTransport, including #walking, as an alternative to motorized conveyance, to reduce vehicular #traffic and increase demand for pedestrian amenities." #AAP (4/)
Four years ago, we took out a 0% Scottish government loan to buy my wife an #ebike. Despite still not really thinking of herself as a cyclist, it’s now her favourite object. Here she shares why she loves it. 😍 https://youtu.be/uTcUouwlAqk
