Car infrastructure: bridge over the creek

Pedestrian/bike infrastructure: path under the bridge that floods and gets muddy every time it rains

Tomorrow on Nextdoor: wHy ArE pEoPLe uSiNg tHe cRoSsWaLk aNd NoT tHe uNdErPaSs

This is what you get when walking and biking are seen solely as recreation, rather than critical transit.

This is a really really interesting article on cutting car use in Gent. Hoping that the councillors who implemented changes here are rewarded for their behaviour too, as so far it's the loudest voices that are being heard in Exeter https://www.globalcyclingnetwork.com/lifestyle/interviews/how-to-half-car-usage-in-less-than-a-decade-a-tour-of-gent

@CernBasher did write a thorough analysis that I recommend in your attention. I want to take a critical look at his predictions and discuss the nuanced realities of such a transformative technology.

Robotaxis may reduce our need for parking, opening space for greener, more livable cities. Yet, they could increase traffic with empty rides. Let's embrace this flexibility, maybe favoring bicycles for shorter trips.

Boost walking and cycling in towns and cities, urges UK government adviser

“Cars particularly destroy the liberty of the child and the teenager to move around safely,” it said. “Children are much less free now than they were 50 or 100 years ago, a fact which changes the nature and vitality of our towns.”

We attended Coburg North Food Swap, lunch opposite Brunswick Town Hall, attended the Socialist Alliance end of year picnic, popped into the Merri-bek Council Library futures free Palestine space at the Old Coburg station, sat down with the Melbourne Anarchist Communist picnic, then attended Coburg Night Market. Actually it SHOULD be difficult and stressful to drive a car in a city and if it's not then you're not taking your responsibility seriously enough

Kay,
@Kay@mastodon.nz avatar

@mbonsma @isaacfreeman Except I hope for disabled people and their drivers if they're not the drivers themselves. My conditions are mild enough to let me walk to a bus stop and travel into a citythat way. Some disabled people can only go into a city, e,g, for a medical appointment, if there is vehicle access and a nearby carpark.

Rather than make it harder to drive cars, why not make it easier and cheaper to use and including walking and cycling in cities?

Boring, it's only parallel parking. Come to Melbourne and try the hook turn, baby!

The majority of drivers are anxious about this manoeuvre, survey finds https://www.drive.com.au/caradvice/anxiety-about-parking-survey-australia/

@timrichards
Parallel parking often is the cause of holding up traffic and trams on in and . There are thousands of car parks in off street car parking close to Sydney Rd. Victorian State Government is dragging its heels in removing parking, implementing protected bike lanes, accessible tram stops and enlarging footpath space for pedestrians, cafes, and street vegetation making a more liveable, enjoyable shopping environment..
