Appreciating that the home heating bill will likely drop this winter because of this hat! Don't want to take it off, even indoors.

It was a gift from family this week, and it's super soft, warm, and so comfortable. And the craftsmanship — made in , Skukum Designs by Carol Young — is supreme.

We see Carol has an Etsy shop, so imagine you can contact her there if you want to order such a hat, custom made. https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/Skukum?fbclid=IwAR2U3AC8ODtB2T8C2YHvVYOdXBfGTtYGx4XlrYFBFLO3pCSOQGFdFwzsxN8

A question about riding in the dark from @ai6yr:

Q4. The road bike I am now riding around town (1985 Dave Scott Ironman) has no reflectors or lights, and though I don't current go anywhere when it's dark, I am wondering what kind of additions the experienced here would recommend to improve safety on that front (or how to make it usable in darker conditions?) I'm using the bicycle for running errands...

bikemonterey,
@bikemonterey@sfba.social avatar

@ascentale @ai6yr A4

Chiming in about lights. We recommend going beyond what's legally required in California; that is, we use a rear light on bicycle, not just a rear reflector. BTW, our bike law summary—in and English— is handy to share with people unaware of California's legal requirements about lights and reflectors: https://bikemonterey.org/wp-content/uploads/Bike-law-summary-Spanish-and-English-1.pdf

Our "Night Ride Home" piece tells of our sans-headlight experience in 2009 https://bikemonterey.org/night-ride-home-and-were-all-heroes-on-public-radio.html, and also musician Sarah Factor's sans-lights experience in 2013 https://bikemonterey.org/musician-sarah-factor-has-a-bike-story-to-tell-listen-up.html.

@ai6yr
Some bicycle shops have bags of FREE reflectors available for the asking. Why? They are often asked by racers to remove the reflectors. That came to our attention when we were seeking reflectors for bikes used in the Monterey County Probation Department Youth Center bike education program that we founded in 2012 (which still rolls on, thanks to two faithful volunteers, Frank Henderson and Luciano Rodriguez - https://bikemonterey.org/probation-dept-youth-center-bike-education.html). We also found, when buying pedals for a used bike without any (and we wanted pedals with reflectors, as required by California law) that some bike shop employees are unaware of that legal requirement, for bikes ridden on public streets in CA.

One idea he mentioned: small-business discount programs. @ 29:50 https://youtu.be/pPxwq0fs1xY?si=neFweJcmoT7isBI7&t=1790

As we noted in our perennials post (where he's among those featured) https://bikemonterey.org/perennials-biking-monterey-county.html, Ed's career expertise demanded many working hours at the computer. That made those hours with his handcycle a very desirable way to keep life in balance! :)

E-BIKE SAFETY: California Assembly Bill 1946 (Boerner Horvath) required the California Highway Patrol to develop statewide safety standards and training programs for users of e-bikes, on or before Sept 1, 2023.

On Aug 31, 2023, CHP announced https://www.chp.ca.gov/PressReleases/Pages/CHP-ROLLS-OUT-STATEWIDE-SAFETY-TRAINING-PROGRAM--FOR-ELECTRIC-BICYCLES.aspx their online e-bike safety and training program is now available on the following resources page: https://www.chp.ca.gov/Programs-Services/Services-Information/Bike-and-Ped-Safety.

@enobacon Appreciate your discernment and hope other viewers are equally discerning. The Aug 30 and Aug 31 releases (https://bikemonterey.org/e-bike-safety-and-training.html) came my way in an extra busy time, and I still haven't viewed. Posted nonetheless since I had people asking, because of the expected follow through by CHP on AB 1946. A disclaimer would have been in order. We'll edit the post you've replied to and add the other new ebike resource there too, so viewers can sift through both for best (and worst) info/examples.

We've often found CHP and other gov bike materials—from local cities to state level to fed level— surprisingly poor, despite them being funded, and have repeatedly spoken out about their inaccuracies and other issues over the years. Definitely frustrating, both as a taxpayer and as an advocate (unpaid volunteer since 2009). Thanks for your comment, and feel free to phone to discuss.
