Car infrastructure: bridge over the creek

Pedestrian/bike infrastructure: path under the bridge that floods and gets muddy every time it rains

Tomorrow on Nextdoor: wHy ArE pEoPLe uSiNg tHe cRoSsWaLk aNd NoT tHe uNdErPaSs

This is what you get when walking and biking are seen solely as recreation, rather than critical transit.

Someone gets killed on a bicycle a year ago in an intersection known to be dangerous, 10 yr old study, and they study it again and city admin recommend no change "at this time". The person killed had her kids with her (survived). I'm going to city council to talk about it on behalf of Saskatoon Cycles tomorrow, and I don't know if I should cry or shout or ??? in the 5 mins allocated. What's the life of one person in the life of a city?

Yesterday, April 22, 2024 we hosted a bike ride in to show support for infrastructure changes. Yellowknife is only about 8 km from end to end. We shouldn't feel obligated to drive our cars everywhere, but our bike route network is incomplete and not reliably maintained. Over 100 people joined the ride to say they want their travel habits to be healthier, cheaper, safer, greener, and more joyful. Not bad for a city with a total population of around 20,000.

Check out the video! (I couldn't upload it directly to Mastodon, anyone else having that problem?)

One of the cool things in my life is building and monitoring a (now) 10 county newsroom RSS newsfeed and seeing the Palo Alto city council will be considering the removal of parking for bike lanes on El Camino Real.

Just one current example of the projects underway in at this time.

Anyone out there know of studies on the safety of people #walking & #biking along the #highway when there are #roadside flashing electronic #billboards present?

My city's looking to get rid of an ordinance that prevents sign content from changing faster than a minute (or thereabouts), to allow signs to flash & change at any speed.

This is the sort of thing I would've put out on twitter back in the day... Mastodon, watcha got for me?😃

The pathway alongside the Ottawa Hospital construction site on Preston is blocked. We’ve contacted the local councillor who’s looking to staff for a resolution.
We hope this happens quickly. It’s a busy north/south route for people🚶‍♀️& the winter 🚲 network. 1/3

bikeottawa,
@bikeottawa@mastodon.social avatar

We’re asking for the pathway to be returned to its original condition, or if a detour is required, create a WINTER-MAINTAINED detour directly alongside the fencing that is:

Safe
Direct
Logical
Accessible

California Bicycle Coalition / 2024 Summit Advance Session "Success Stories from San Diego" included a presentation by Bike SD's ED Anar Salayev. He referred to importance of recognizing needs of small businesses while advocating for changes that make streets safer for people who bike & walk.

One idea he mentioned: small-business discount programs. @ 29:50 https://youtu.be/pPxwq0fs1xY?si=neFweJcmoT7isBI7&t=1790

In 2009 we launched such a program in ; it remains in place, although impacted by pandemic, as well as by need for support. (As with all projects https://bikemonterey.org/about/financial-donations/donations-some-ways-your-money-can-help, we've done all HER Helmet Thursdays work as a volunteer 2009-2023.) Study looks at “the relationships between mobility behavior and four facets of orientation towards the common good: political participation, social participation in organizations, neighborhood solidarity, and neighborly helpfulness”

“Cycling rather than driving was positively associated with orientation towards the common good in all models.”

Where are all these people going? Hint: rush hour, close to University of Ottawa, Rideau Centre, Centretown.

They’re riding, walking, rolling to school, work, grocery. That’s right. They’re going somewhere important. They’re traffic.

Tooting this again for the morning crowd.

My city has a habit of keeping a new bike lane closed until its perfect. Does this make people safer or less safe? Do all cities do this? I made a new video that looks at this issue.

I'm really shocked watching this video of a Toronto driver ramming into a driving over a cyclist. It's a miracle he survived.

Incident occurred Wed July 19th. On Yonge north of Lawrence.
