Someone gets killed on a bicycle a year ago in an intersection known to be dangerous, 10 yr old study, and they study it again and city admin recommend no change "at this time". The person killed had her kids with her (survived). I'm going to city council to talk about it on behalf of Saskatoon Cycles tomorrow, and I don't know if I should cry or shout or ??? in the 5 mins allocated. What's the life of one person in the life of a city? #cycling#activeTransportation
Yesterday, April 22, 2024 we hosted a #criticalmass bike ride in #Yellowknife#NWT to show support for #activetransportation infrastructure changes. Yellowknife is only about 8 km from end to end. We shouldn't feel obligated to drive our cars everywhere, but our bike route network is incomplete and not reliably maintained. Over 100 people joined the ride to say they want their travel habits to be healthier, cheaper, safer, greener, and more joyful. Not bad for a city with a total population of around 20,000.
Check out the video! (I couldn't upload it directly to Mastodon, anyone else having that problem?) #BikeTooter
One of the cool things in my life is building and monitoring a (now) 10 county newsroom RSS newsfeed and seeing the Palo Alto city council will be considering the removal of parking for bike lanes on El Camino Real.
Where are my #yyjbike friends at?
This petition to make Wallace Drive safer has nearly 500 signatures!
If you live in greater Victoria, or (aspire to) visit here by bike, please sign and share!
To users of #ActiveTransportation in #MontereyCounty — or visitors or residents who'd like to, IF ONLY the infrastructure were safer and more convenient:
Letters of support sent by Jan 16 to Todd Muck at Transportation Agency for Monterey County can strengthen TAMC's grant proposal to #Caltrans. Email your letter to Todd; questions can be directed to Janneke Strause. https://www.tamcmonterey.org/staff
My city's looking to get rid of an ordinance that prevents sign content from changing faster than a minute (or thereabouts), to allow signs to flash & change at any speed.
This is the sort of thing I would've put out on twitter back in the day... Mastodon, watcha got for me?😃
The pathway alongside the Ottawa Hospital construction site on Preston is blocked. We’ve contacted the local councillor who’s looking to staff for a resolution.
We hope this happens quickly. It’s a busy north/south route for people🚶♀️& the winter 🚲 network. #Ottawa#BikeTooter#Cycling#SafeDetours 1/3
We’re asking for the pathway to be returned to its original condition, or if a detour is required, create a WINTER-MAINTAINED #activetransportation detour directly alongside the fencing that is:
California Bicycle Coalition / #CalBike 2024 Summit Advance Session "Success Stories from San Diego" included a presentation by Bike SD's ED Anar Salayev. He referred to importance of recognizing needs of small businesses while advocating for changes that make streets safer for people who bike & walk.
#UrbanPlanning + #YIMBY friends: Can anyone point me to stats showing that converting to multifamily zoning disincentivizes car use by curbing sprawl and increasing #walkability / #bikeability rather than (as my NIMBY neighbor believes) increasing traffic? Thanks in advance for any boosts! #ActiveTransportation
Study looks at “the relationships between mobility behavior and four facets of orientation towards the common good: political participation, social participation in organizations, neighborhood solidarity, and neighborly helpfulness”
“Cycling rather than driving was positively associated with orientation towards the common good in all models.”
Oct 14 is deadline for Governor Gavin Newsom to sign or veto these #ActiveTransportation bills (and if he takes no action, these bills become law). Read CalBike's post (link above) for details on these—along with a list of two-year-bills (e.g., AB 73, Boerner Horvath, Bicycle Safety Stop, which legalizes stop-as-yield for bike riders aged 18 or older). #IdahoStop
"Almost every California community has a state highway that doubles as a local street. These are often the most dangerous roads, because the California Department: of Transportation / Caltrans has historically prioritized moving cars quickly over the safety of people #biking and #walking.
My city has a habit of keeping a new bike lane closed until its perfect. Does this make people #cycling safer or less safe? Do all cities do this? I made a new video that looks at this issue.

E-BIKE SAFETY: California Assembly Bill 1946 (Boerner Horvath) required the California Highway Patrol to develop statewide safety standards and training programs for users of e-bikes, on or before Sept 1, 2023.
