A couple of weeks ago, I noted that new #COVID19 variants were rising and were likely to cause a modest rise in US infections this spring and summer. It appears this has now started, but thus far only in the West region. Viral activity is High in Utah and Wyoming and Moderate in Montana and Nevada. Most states are still low and minimal (including Wisconsin), but we can expect infection risks to rise in the month ahead. (1/5)
Here's a study that challenges one of my assumptions about air travel. I thought once in the air, #COVID19 risks were lower due to air filtering. Apparently not. This STUDY is based on flights before vaccines were available.
"Compared to short flights without masking, medium and long flights without masking were associated with 4.66-fold increase and 25.93-fold increase in incidence rates, respectively..." (1/2)
I've seen more concerning studies about #COVID19 during pregnancy. Here's the latest:
"Children exposed to antenatal COVID-19 have a tenfold higher frequency of DD (developmental delay) as compared to controls and should be offered neurodevelopmental follow-up."
"Compared to unvaccinated cases, vaccinated cases had a similar or lower risk of all PCC categories except mental health disorders. Pre-infection vaccination was associated with reduced risk of several PCC outcomes and hence may decrease the long-term consequences of COVID-19."
#COVID19 vaccines work--but they're more protective against hospitalization than infection (which means the risk of Long COVID remains a concern.)
"For the Omicron variant, aVE (Adjusted vaccine effectiveness) within 12–120 days post-second dose was 61.1 % (BNT162b2) and 85.1 % (mRNA-1273), decreasing to 36.7 % and 24.9 %, respectively, after 120 days. Regardless of variant, aVE for hospitalization prevention after 2 doses was 87.0 % (BNT162b2) and 89.0 % (mRNA-1273)."
Hard for me to believe some people are still advancing the idea #COVID19 vaccines are dangerous. Yes, all vaccines come with risks of side effects. But many studies show this one is safe compared to the risk from COVID. Here is one more of those studies: "No evidence of an increased risk of stroke following vaccination was observed."
Lady Gaga splits fans after admitting she had Covid during 5 live shows.
"The star then revealed that she “did 5 shows with Covid” as she didn’t want to cancel and disappoint the tens of thousands of supporters who planned to attend." 🤦♂️

Via @SFPublicPress read about Osbaldo Varilla-Aguilar, a Latino immigrant worker who is still experiencing symptoms after becoming critically ill from COVID-19 in December 2020.
I am concerned that even the most #COVID19-cautious experts are losing their focus. Everything from them is becoming H5N1 all the time. They're moving on.
TWO AMERICANS have bird flu. It does NOT transmit human-to-human. This could change, but that isn't today's risk.
10 MILLION Americans will get another COVID infection this month--during our "low" point--and 1 million or more of them will develop #LongCovid.
Keep your eyes more on the risks we face today than what we MAY face tomorrow.
A question, fellow #COVIDSafe folk, what do we think about KN95 mask expiration dates? Seeing a lot of expired or soon to expire masks for sale and my mum is asking if they are still good? So I am asking all of you.
I follow COVID scientists here on Mastodon. I've seen them post links to studies showing waning effectiveness of COVID vaccines after 6 months.
I received the updated booster last October and want to get boosted again prior to some planned travel in July. (Air travel to the MAGA anti-vax cesspool known as Florida)
I have contacted three pharmacies in my area.
One has no COVID vaccines at all and said they won't receive any until fall.
The other two say they will not vaccinate me because they must follow US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines stating that only people 65 years and older should receive boosters at this time.
They won't vaccinate me even if I am willing to pay out of pocket.
Both say I must get a recommendation from my health care provider before they will even consider it.
Less than 20% of people in my state are up to date on their COVID vaccines. For those of us who want to follow the science and not some arbitrary age limitation, why not let us get vaccinated?

I still don't trust gyms enough to use them, even when #COVID19 is low. Here's why: I ran an experiment in my home office using my CO2 monitor. I did my daily high-intensity exercise in the sealed room at 7:30. Then I let it air out and worked quietly in the same sealed room starting at 8:30. It took:
Less than 20 minutes of exercise for CO2 to rise from 600 to 1200.
Almost 2 hours of working at my desk to rise from 670 to 1270.
CO2 levels tell us how much air is rebreathed and is a proxy for infection risks in spaces shared with others. If one person working out in a 250-square-foot room can cause CO2 to go from safe to poor in just 20 minutes, what can a roomful of exercising people do to risks in a gym? Perhaps some have upgraded air filtration and ventilation, but without CO2 monitoring, I just wouldn't trust it. (2/2)
