I'm working on a large-scale for and with soloists.

What should I listen to for inspiration?

Any time period, any style -- I'm interested in seeing different ways of combining these forces, and studying the nuts and bolts of .

If you're a , director, or who has wrestled with this, what would you say are the key do's and don'ts of writing for this combination?

So who's your favourite band or artist? What's your favourite song or album?

I'm keen to hear both who you're currently listening to, as well as your all-time favourites and guilty pleasures.

What do you like about them? How did you get into their music? And significant stories or memories?

I got my Spotify wrapped recently and it was almost identical to 2022 (a year of lazy listening) and completely lacking some of my most favourite genres.

So, if you have the time, I'd love some suggestions of Classical music to listen to. Old, new, opera, just anything you enjoy. Playlists welcome too.

Thank you in advance.

It's Clara Schumann's birthday today! Guess which famous composer she was talking about when she wrote this:

"Before [him], people used to play; after [him], they pounded or whispered. He has the decline of the piano on his conscience."

Another weekend, another story of ... sometimes its hard to believe this is 2024.

Now, in a sector that saw 'blind auditions' (with players behind curtains) do much to reduce sexism in hiring practice, it seems that pianists are still facing discrimination(s) across the world of .

So, despite seeming like a more 'civilised' area of the , what we still see are unacceptable discrimination & .

Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Gerald Moore - Winterreise, Op. 89, D. 911: 20. Der Wegweiser

Weiser stehen auf den Strassen,
Weisen auf die Städte zu,
Und ich wandre sonder Massen,
Ohne Ruh’, und suche Ruh’.

Einen Weiser seh’ ich stehen
Unverrückt vor meinem Blick;
Eine Strasse muss ich gehen,
Die noch Keiner ging zurück.

Chances are high you know Samuel Barber's beautiful classical piece Adagio for Strings. It has been used in several films, including Platoon.

But not as many people know that there's also a choral variation, called Agnus Dei. Personally, I think that's even more beautiful. Listening to it always gives me goosebumps. Turn up the volume, close your eyes and enjoy...

Between the 16th and 19th centuries, composers like Antonio Vivaldi and Nicola Popora taught music to orphaned girls at Venice's four Ospedali Grandi. For @TheConversationUS, musicologist Marica S. Tacconi tells the story of how, on a visit to one of the smaller Ospedali, she and singer Liesl Odenweller found, painted in a fresco, a page of sheet music, which will be performed in a concert this December.
