Ugh, #Linode feels so expensive now for hosting our mastodon server, thinking a lot about just hosting it at home and having Linode host the object storage and front the reverse proxy. We have plenty of hardware and bandwidth (10Gb fiber) here. 🤔
I could also just downsize the linode probably but that would involve shrinking some file systems to fit within the reduced storage or migrating to a new Linode and ugh.
We released version 0.3.0 of Chisel Operator, our FOSS inlets-operator competitor, allowing you to easily reverse-proxy to your local cluster. It now supports integration with cloud providers for automatic provisioning, starting with #AWS, #DigitalOcean, and #Linode.
We released version 0.2.0 of Submarine, our bootloader for Depthcharge/Chromebooks. This release adds initial support for ARM Chromebooks, starting with the mt8183 SoC.
Our first hardware product is currently in R&D. While we're making rapid progress, we're not 100% ready to share what this product is.
#wordpress devs, how do and more importantly your readers feel about the wordpress toolbar?
I've had it hidden on https://sirtaptap.com for years to keep it clean, but the fediverse Friends plugin needs it (or some way to log in and add), and I've been thinking about adding more social features to the site like bbpress or buddypress, which would require signups.
It really doesn't waste a lot of space, so I guess I'm just worried about the WP version of the "Made in unity splashscreen" effect
In fact if you're spooked, here's a crazy easy way to get started with an impressively durable baby server:
Get a $5 #Linode#VPS. Use a stackscript to install Wordpress + apache (or 1 click install most popular web software). Wordpress is #FOSS, 0 coding required, yet fully customizable if you want
#Cloudflare 's free tier adds security, cache, DDOS protection, and their domain name prices can't be beat, they're wholesale.
Now for ~$70 a year and 2 new logins, you have a fully functional site
I've got a few months of hosting a #peertube instance and have learned quite a few things. One thing that surprised me was that the cost of storage and network bandwidth was not nearly as much as I thought it was going to be. That being said, the cost of hosting a server capable of handling the CPU loads of transcoding a live #stream turned out to be quite higher than I was expecting.
I can afford it but it has me looking at what my plans are for the future with an eye towards cost. (cont'd)
Now keep in mind I do this for fun. I do not have any designs to doing this for a living. I play games but I also like to chat with people. So this is basically an expensive hobby for me and I'd like to make sure things don't spiral out of control.
I use #Linode for hosting and I have no complaints so far. The server hosting is about $48/mo for 4 VCPUs. This is because when I do a live stream, the transcoding process eats up two full CPUs easily.
At present, I'm only paying $5/mo for the object storage, but in a few months I'll probably hit 250 GB at which point #Linode will start charging me $0.02/GB/mo.
So at 500 GB it will be $10/mo. And for every 250 GB after that it's an additional 5 bucks monthly.
Again, not a huge amount of money, but it adds up. I can see having a full TB of data in storage at this rate, and I'm concerned.
So, moving forward I'll be making a few changes to my video retention policy (cont'd).
Finally got search up and running on my Mastodon server. Took a bit - I'm no expert and need to follow guides. Thanks to @michael for the fantastic guide here: https://blog.thms.uk/2023/09/mastodon-elasticsearch - all I did differently is used VLAN's on #Linode and blocked all public traffic to the ES server.
The sample is from Oct 29th, the sample will favour English speaking servers. There was a total of 1495 servers seen. These are the top 25 most common AS seen.
First is #OVH, then @cloudflare, then Hetzner, #Digitalocean, #Linode, and #Netcup. There is a very long tail of hosting providers so there could be a mashup of AS names from a single host.
I really wonder why my lefty-hacky-tech bubble isn't talking more about #Hetzner and #Linode enabling a probably state-actor ordered, network-level machine-in-the-middle attack in their data centers in Germany. Even the german #netzpolitik bubble I follow is barely discussing it.
So I ask myself: Is it because it affected xmpp/jabber-servers with .ru domains? Is it because it is so hard to verify anything externally? Or is this just actually not that big of a deal, and probably happening far more often than I thought - 'even' in Germany/the EU?
I'd take these allegations with a grain of salt. But I must say that MitM'ing with a #LetsEncrypt certificate and then forgetting to renew it, leading to discovery, sounds like the most German law enforcement thing ever.
#introduction Hey everyone! 👋 This is Cloud Unpacked.
This is a blog to write about the intricacies of developer-focused hosting providers like #Linode :linode: or #DigitalOcean. A place to share #homelab tools with fellow geeks. And my favorite, a place for #Linux 🐧 server documentation.
Following even a tiny bit in the shoes of @omgubuntu would be a success. ❤️
This also reminds me of my main problem with #linode RN. Linode hasn't done anything as bad as Unity, but Akami bought them out and they've made it very clear they're chasing Enterprise cash, similar to Unity clearly chasing ad/F2P, and AAA stuff here.
When you're not their target customer anymore, it's usually only a matter of time. You know you're not what they want and their new terms/features/etc will show it.
@majorlinux#linode is very affordable and what I be found that have tons documentation that’s top quality content. I think it’s worth trying Linode out for a month or two. Good luck
Failed again to upgrade my #Linode from #Ubuntu 18.04 to 20.04. After upgrading I can’t ssh in, and apt update seems unable to access the internet to check for updates.
I’ll try again tomorrow. That’s what weekends are for.
So who here is using @njalla? I'm considering migrating one of my #Linode#servers over. Njalla have been on my radar for a few years but not yet tried them. I did always enjoy reading their responses to takedown demands etc. It seems their location and #privacy principles would be worth the slightly higher costs for my needs (shared CPU, 2-4GB RAM). I'd be interested to hear about people's experience with them - or maybe another service you'd recommend! 👍
Just a tip for those who got the $100 voucher on #Linode through Youtube creator promotions. There is an expiry data, and it is only valid for about 6 months, so just use it all up with fun experimentstion.
If you're going to the trouble of moving your community, why would you move from one centralized service to another? I've given this advice to a number of #reddit subs so far:
Start your own hosted website to post a daily summary of community news.
Move your community to a federated service like #Lemmy or #Kbin.
It depends on what you're willing to pay, and how much work you're willing to do. If you don't mind paying a bit of money ($10-20 a month) then you can get a service like #DigitalOcean or #Linode and use a one-click installer for something like #Grav#Ghost or #Hugo
If you want to pay as little as possible, you can find a cheaper VPS (or even self-host) and install any of the above, but it's definitely more work and will require some technical trial-and-error.
I took a dive into #Vitess today, the "secret sauce" from YouTube (and Planetscale) for crazy database scaling.
Honestly it does look really good, nicer than Galera, but they really need better documentation and examples for everyone that doesn't use Kubernetes. 😡
So for now I don't think I'm going to use it. That said, I think I will switch to Percona from MariaDB, to save myself the migration pain later.
An oddity I discovered is that #Linode is able to spin up instances that boot off block storage (external networked hard drives). 🤔
Block storage isn't as fast as local drives, but it provides a really interesting way to spin up genuine temporary compute instances that pick up exactly where they left off. 🤔🤔
I haven't compared the pricing of Linode GPU compute against Lambda (its probably be worse), but I like that it's an option.
Block storage on RAM instances get me thinking though. 🤔
Now that I have all the pieces, my goal is to migrate the legacy #LDJam website data over the weekend. Changing names, emails, and recovering data from unlinked accounts will come after.
Starting next week, I need to find sponsor(s) for Ludum Dare 54 in September, because....😅 #LudumDare#Migration
I've run into a situation where I could save myself a lot of trouble if I upgraded my #PHP version.
Unfortunately that means rebuilding the server. That said, I've been meaning to experiment with #Hashicorp#Terraform. 🤔
(some time passes)
Cool! Terraform is quite nice to use. I have a reference copy of my #Linode infrastructure exported and rebuilt for reference, and a new copy I can spin-up and destroy on demand. I still need to write provisioning (install) scripts though. #LDJam
