about the Join Jabber collective:

Their aim is to make the federation of chat servers using the XMPP protocol accessible to more people, and improve across the whole network.

A lot of the accounts you follow and interact with on here are not Mastodon accounts!

For example, @theatticdwellers is a PeerTube account, @Iancylkowski is a Pixelfed account, @rstv is an OwnCast account.

There are dozens of different server types on here, not just Mastodon servers. When you talk about this place, it's not enough to call it "Mastodon", because it's more than just that.

That's why people call this place "The Fediverse", because that name covers all server types. :fediverse:

hackbyte,

@runarcn There's more to the and the than "just" activitypub.

And in so far, no its not "fediverse+mastodon" ... mastodon is just another part within the broader federation.

That's why i'm using friendica... Form here i can connect to DFRN, Diaspora* and AcitvitiPub ;)

There are something in the neighborhood of 9 million users on the , & people are still saying it's a flash in the pan?

My dear dudes, how many users do you need? There are around 7.5 million on Mastodon alone!

FeralRobots,
@FeralRobots@mastodon.social avatar

I strongly suspect social critical mass is not a relative thing. very likely has a buffering effect, to be sure, but once you get past a million or so users & assuming sufficient diversity, you probably have MORE than enough critical mass to sustain a social media network.

So the whole 'is the real?' game media is playing isn't about that, it's about who "wins" in some imaginary contest.

🤷

I noticed that the Aztec dummy paint masks I’m using on this build don’t include masks for the neck and inboard pylons, so I’ll have to use decals for those areas instead. For now, I’ve masked off the blue areas and it’s now time to apply the first Aztec colour.

There are (at least) three arguments I continually see where people seem to be talking past each other on the issue of and :

  1. The issue of choosing an instance.
  2. The issue of moving between instances.
  3. The issue of admins being able to "spy" on you.

Because I'm feeling ranty and have been working a lot today on farm chores, I'm going to break down what I see in each one.

Rolling your eyes at this is mostly a demonstration of Not Getting It™ when it comes to other people's concerns on and .

Does it mean that they can't be fixed? No.

Does it mean that their risk model may be flawed? Sure.

But saying "what's so difficult, this can happen elsewhere" or "you can just move instances" is missing a Very Big Point™ and just causing frustration for everyone.

I hate the fact that services like and .com are blocking whole servers because of some spam emails.

Instead of fighting by sharpening their filters they fight the infrastructure by blocking more and more small email servers.

This is killing email .

And now, instance admins are blocking mastodon.social that serves as an important entry point to the , killing Mastodon instead of fighting the spam accounts.

😠

After seeing multiple implosions of groups from:

  • Admins deciding it is time to spam everyone with a raffle.
  • …throwing a fit when people say that their "joke" about scabbing isn't funny.
  • …changing and the "new sheriff in town" deciding to flex their newfound muscle.
  • …burning out and essentially throwing up their hands and walking away from everything.

If we believe in we really need to find a way for people to take their posts with them and delete from the last server.

Sto provando phanpy.social un frontend alternativo per mastodon e, nonostante sia ancora acerbo (a me ad esempio non funziona il pulsante per scrivere un nuovo post) sembra davvero promettente!

3 cose saltano subito all'occhio rispetto all'interfaccia ufficiale:

  1. le risposte ad albero sui threads permettono una visione immediata di come si è sviluppata la discussione (fig. 1)
  2. i boosts non vengono mischiati ai toots, ma ogni tanto vengono raggruppati nel feed in dei carousel (fig. 2)
  3. è possibile sfogliare le timeline locali di altre istanze e metterle nei preferiti per tornarci facilmente

Tanta roba!

Do you like the idea of a free, decentralized social media? Then make the move today. Simply use the built in migration feature and move from mastodon.social to one of the smaller servers.

You can choose a server that has a theme that fits your posting habits, a server local to where you live or a generalist server in your language.

I know the /AT devs & Dorsey (mostly Dorsey) keep saying that “Bluesky” is essentially a proof of concept and will (if all works according to plan) cease to exist once blossoms.

But…

I don’t believe that. I feel the OG server & native clients will be cemented and always be somewhat of a default.

atomicpoet, (edited ) to internet

is finally testing federation with "allow-listed servers".

They're finally taking the step of decentralization.

Many people will naysay this. But it's absolutely better that they move to decentralization than not do it.

https://blueskyweb.xyz/blog/5-5-2023-federation-architecture

samiseppo,

@atomicpoet A few thoughts from a non-technical wonderer:

Does the announced profound need of recoding imply it's going to apply and absorb AT-protocol, to federate first with and perhaps within itself too – on multiple server centers.

Who governs the AT-protocol, if it's not open-sourced (like 'ed )? Who owns it? Who's going to buy the core infra of such walled gardened ? 🤔

Let's talk about #FediProblems unrelated to #Bluesky today.

The prevelance of #Discord in #Fediverse #moderation.

#Discord is a centralized service with a history of violating the #gdpr and being generally not #privacy friendly.

In terms of data security, it's messages are comparable to #DMs on the #Fediverse - they are always accessible to the admins of the service.

But still, moderation teams on the #fediverse use the service for coordination.

We shouldn't just have silencing, blocking and other - we also need concepts of reasoning, warnings and reprieve in . These should be created as part of the process and published to explain a decision, both to the instance members and other instances' moderators.

This would increase and could make easier.

the_roamer,

, text-based --- ouch. It will be important to see how these are implemented, but it feels like a climbdown. A move toward attention-grabbing broadcasting, away from attention-giving dialogue.

Whatever happened to the slow, considered, anti-viral ethos of classical ? Awaiting implementation details, but I am sceptical.

And an process that sends everyone to one mega instance seems to be the opposite of building.

“We believe it’s important for Mastodon to be good as a product on its own merits, and not just because of its ideology. If we only attract people who already care about decentralization, our ability to make decentralization mainstream becomes that much harder. Making the onboarding process as easy as possible helps new users get past the sign-up process and more quickly engage with others.”

👏👏👏

I'm hosting my own Git instance for a while now (Gitea) and I'm still not sure if I want to have it as my default/main instance or stick with GitHub as my main.

What would you do?
I'm also very curious what self-hosted instances you guys use.
