I 100% align with the message from Emma Bunton and Jamie Lee Curtis. I will fight against suppression of LBGTQ+ rights and will protect trans kids unconditionally.

If any of my follower spots any way however small that I can help support, PLEASE do let me know. (As a cisgender straight male I may not directly feel or be aware of attacks).

The toll of mass shootings should not be measured only in deaths and injuries. Hundreds of people in the last two weeks alone have been present as shootings have unfolded, and they aren’t counted in the effects. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/05/09/mass-killings-texas-shooting/?itid=ap_philipbump

@pbump Right! PTSD is another toll taken by surviving witnesses. They shouldn't be left alone with the horrible burden.

Anyone even lending ANY support to fascists - is a fucking cowardly fascist enabler. Still a fascist - no matter how many cowardice levels stripes earned (ALL fascists are fucking loser )

Remember when Occupy Wall Street produced news photos of arrests that looked like baroque paintings of martyrs?

KashifShah,

@kierkegaank Indeed, late-stage capitalism apparently leads to early-stage ochlochracy. If only they had been unified behind the idea of Human Rights instead of breaking Wall Street :/

That message might have been heard at that time.

Sadly, this country doesn’t currently teach human rights and we still haven’t ratified the main international treaty on cultural and social Human Rights.

Ratification of that Covenant will naturally lead to budget pressures on the oligarchs.

The current leadership of the EU and its Member States spits on those ideals every single day.

They are deeply embedded in illegality. From the EU’s “let them die policy” in the Mediterranean, to several member states criminalizing saving lives at sea, to the EU’s complicity in torture in Libya.

It's not a happy when our leaders have abandoned us and our shared morality.

Apparently they would rather fight a civil war than defeat facism.

@Susan_Larson_TN For whatever it may be worth to you, I once listened to a speech by an Auschwitz survivor.

One of his main points was to remove the word "hate" from your dictionary.

Hence, I would propose focusing on a positive word like "human rights" and use it in a way like "inhumane speech" or "speech that violates human rights" or "undignified speech", etc.

After an initial surge of interest, I’ve found myself lacking a strong desire to participate on Mastodon.

I think I’ve come to just hate all social media. This is partly because it both reflects and shapes the world around us, which is increasingly dangerous, divisive, and fascistic. So while my Mastodon experience is significantly less hostile, the news shared is still largely about the decaying world, a recent mass shooting, or the newest fascist legislation signed into law.

I can’t run away from it, or lock myself in a filter bubble of joyful content. Because bubble or not, the world is still a mess.

No social media can fix this, federated or not. Until the world gets better, all social media will do is make me feel like shit either by making me experience tragedy upon tragedy, or making me feel like shit for turning the other way as it happens.

So, I retreat.

KashifShah, (edited )

@JGibbard Aye, my fellow human, aye.

Human Rights are the only peaceful, non-violent ways to defeat the forces of hate and destructiveness.

If you question the effectiveness, though, just remember that every reasonable person that witnesses your fight for will be that much more prepared by your quality argumentation.

One’s own mental health comes first, though, for sure.

You can also consider switching battlefields from Mastodon into more passive places like kbin or lemmy
