My gruff, but lovable, biker neighbor just pounded on my door, handed me a massive bowl of homemade cioppino with the biggest prawns I’ve ever seen, muttered “merry Christmas” with a lit cigarette dangling from his lip and dashed off like an elf in leather chaps to wassail some other neighbors. Our high today is 52°F/11°C, which is 20-25°F/13-15°C warmer than the mean this time of year. Tonight it's only supposed to drop down to 45°F/7°C, which is 30-40°F/18-22°C warmer than the mean this time of year.
The lakes that had started to freeze over are open once again. Not a flake of snow remains to speak of.
A lot of people up here will be hurting if it doesn't get cold and snow soon.
I'm an atheist and have moved continents many times in my career, so I've spent many Christmases without family. Nonetheless, I love cooking and gift-giving so it's one of my favourite holidays, and in non-pandemic times if not going home I would host all my stray friends and coworkers who had nowhere else to go or didn't want to cook. Last few years, not so safe, and I do miss that. 😞 But wishing a safe and #MerryChristmas to everyone wherever you are, and a happy, healthy new year! ❤️🎄
Since my kids all live out of state, my Christmas ritual is to roam around the Loop after church and take pictures for tourists so that they have at least one photo of everyone in their group.
