I think this NPR story comes close to getting everything right about the dilemmas of involuntary treatment of psychiatric illnesses. I highly recommend it.

Eight-year-old girl wounded in Israeli attack denied treatment after Rafah crossing seizure

The closure of the crossing has put a chokehold on any essential aid coming into Gaza and also prevented the departure of wounded people and patients who were waiting to travel to receive treatment.

Among them is eight-year-old Lama Abu Holi and her cousin, who both sustained injuries in an Israeli air attack last month.

Yes, they are. Ambien is common as fuck and so are other benzo family medications,

Pharmacological Treatment of Insomnia

The recommended sequence of medication trials is:

Short- or intermediate-acting benzodiazepine receptor agonists (BzRAs)

You’re still avoiding naming the “much milder and more commonly used ones”, when Ambien and other benzo-derivatives and benzos themselves are factually very commonly used medications for acute insomnia.

Fair amount of research on Long Covid recently. One piece is worrying in that it is now thought that LC might well be a brain injury. Those of us who`ve had Covid or even a severe flu can attest that there is a lot of brain fog and confusion that occurs.
The second piece is encouraging in that there is evidence that on-line rehabilitation programs can be quite effective in improving LC symptoms. Especially the exercise problems and the memory problems that have been reported.

consumption rooms could save thousands of UK lives,
https://www.theguardian.com/society/2024/jan/11/drug-consumption-rooms-could-save-thousands-of-uk-lives-study-finds
My flabber is ghasted. The actually mentions (cautious) Scottish approaches without a snide remark. Ever since the UK licked US boots and endoresed the the ‘war on drugs’ (spoiler, drugs won every year) blinkers have been firmly attached whenever alternative approaches are suggested or even compared with other countries.

or sense does not come easily to these zealots.

Wen,

“But a Home Office spokesperson said: “We do not support the introduction of drug consumption rooms in England and Wales, due to significant concerns they risk encouraging drug use. We are working to tackle the supply of illicit drugs through relentless policing action and building a world-class system of treatment and recovery to turn people’s lives around, backed by £3bn funding over three years.”

Thats worked so well in the past 😖
