Here is a chart in my #memoir about my father's early-onset #Alzheimer's, written with #neurologist Dr. Bruce Miller, detailing the different kinds of #aphasia, where the "assault," as #doctors call it, first starts in the #brain, and the #diagnosis.
"An AI algorithm that reads MRIs more accurately would not have helped neurologist Ilene Ruhoy, MD, PhD, when she developed a 7 cm brain tumor. The key obstacle to her treatment was getting fellow neurologists to believe her symptoms and even order an MRI in the first place."
If you have ever filled out a diagnostic questionnaire, which questions bugged you (and why) & which did you think were missing?
You can also answer privately, if you want.
I'm am starting to collect questions and ideas in order to optimise diagnostic tools.
Please add, which diagnosis you're referring to and which language the questionnaire was in.
It doesn't matter which one it is, here are just some examples: #ADHD#autism#depression#PTSD#cPTSD#DID#anxiety
has anybody ever received a #medical#diagnosis where the #doctor told you that your illness will likely cause a significant reduction in your #lifespan? Not that you are dying, but that you likely will not live to be an old person? How did you deal with this news? How do you handle that?
I got a runner's knee #diagnosis#today. I have the strongest possible #artificial#joint in my left #knee. It was chosen because the posterior cruciate ligament was torn, and the knee would not have stabilized without this model. On the left side, the tendons are now irritatedand and tight. The reason is the stiffness of the model. This artificial joint does not flex at all laterally. It's a strong but "dummy knee" said the physiotherapist. I need to rest, take Burana and go to the massage.
At my December appt. I talked about my ME/CFS symptoms & gave him a copy "Diagnosis and Management of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis / Chronic Fatigue Syndrome" (link below)
At some point my doc said, "You must have a very severe case!" My response was no, severe cases are often bedbound, tube fed, etc
I can't work but I'm moderate. Doctors don't realize how severe ME/CFS can be
@CazimodoCreative
True, many doctors never learn about ME/CFS in medical school, don't take it seriously. With so many new cases from COVID we need better doctor training!
Most studies (surveys) have found that ME/CFS is underdiagnosed (doctors don't recognize it). Yet some patients, who report only fatigue, no other required symptoms (eg, post exertional malaise, unrefreshing sleep), get misdiagnosed with ME/CFS.
This article about a nursing home discharging Steven Block, a person with #dementia who then becomes homeless, is unbearably sad. It is an accompaniment to the #WashingtonPost's very good (and devastating) piece on the deplorable state of #assistedliving communities (even the ones with chandeliers). The #care, or lack thereof, for our #elders is a #shanda.
#Texas Supreme Court has put on hold a judge’s ruling that approved an #abortion for a pregnant woman whose fetus has a #fatal#diagnosis.
Texas Supreme Court on Friday night put on hold a judge's ruling that approved an abortion for a #pregnant#woman whose fetus has a fatal diagnosis, throwing into limbo an unprecedented challenge to one of the most restrictive bans in the #U.S.

It's #AlzheimersAwarenessMonth. When my father was diagnosed in the 80s in his mid-50s, the different kinds of #dementia & #Alzheimers weren't known. When I met #neurologist#BruceMiller, he explained that the real diagnosis was #earlyonset Alzheimer's w/the #logopenic variant (word-finding). The #diagnosis came late (death had already come) but what a relief to have the words & a deeper understanding of what turned my father's life, mine, & my family's inside out.
Last month, I had the honor of speaking at Hawai'i's Behavioral Health #ECHO event. Here is a link to our discussion of the memoir I wrote with #UCSF#neurologist, Dr. Bruce Miller, #Finding the Right Words. We talked about #caregiving, #grief, the power of precision #diagnosis, and the value of #narrativemedicine.
We've seen a cluster of advances in medical #AI in recent days, from randomized trials to making difficult diagnoses. The new Ground Truths gets into it all.
"New study suggests people who tested negative for Covid-19 can still develop long Covid"
"A new study suggests that even more people may be suffering from the post-viral syndrome without having ever received an official diagnosis of Covid-19.
The study … was small, examining only 29 patients. But it offers unique insights into how many cases of long Covid may go unidentified …"
