My friend is looking into contributing to open source but doesn't know where to start. They have experience in Python, C# (Unity), Swift, and React. Does anyone have some pointers or projects they could look into to get started?
🗺️ Is there an app that keeps track of where you’ve walked on a map, so you can seek out streets you haven’t been down yet? Sort of a gamification of exploring one’s neighborhood (or someone else’s while traveling).
EDIT: Looks like https://citystrides.com/ is exactly what I was asking for. Also, Personal Heatmap in Strava subscription may work too. Thanks, everyone!
Another apparatus question: anyone know what this is?
Two glass bulbs connected by a glass tube. Watery orange liquid inside.
**Edit: It's called a "pulse glass" or "Franklin's palm glass."
A liquid with a very low boiling point is sealed. Holding one bulb will boil the liquid and it will flow to the opposite side. Used to show vapor pressure, IMFs, etc. Very cool piece of old equipment.
How open is MacOS compared to Windows? Does it have annoying popups? Can you uninstall everything you don't want? Does it run useless crap in the background? I never used it, personally.
I need to convert #HTML to #Markdown and I'm looking for a tool to do that.
The output should
• preserve line breaks in paragraphs
• not contain additional, unnecessary linebreaks (e.g. 4 empty lines between paragraphs)
• be configurable (e.g. whether to use * or _ for emphasis, or * vs - for unordered lists)
• if possible, allow me to hook into details (e.g. to convert <pre class="shell"> to ```sh)
#Python or #CLI. Alternatively, what's a really configurable prettifier?
This is for a post helping people understand and use the Fediverse - I want to give some examples of a variety of hashtags and groups that will spark interest for lots of different people.
In the official Mastodon web client, under Preferences > Other > PUBLIC TIMELINES > Filter languages I selected only English and Italian. So why do I get toots also in other languages in my timelines?

Are there rules for improvising sound and music together?
Or of deep listening combined with producing sounds?
Instructions for improvising sound made with objects?
I'm thinking of: keep the same volume, don't overpower someone etc.. I want to write a few exercises for visitors to a group exhibition in a chapel and I want to phrase respect in there without being patronizing...
Where (in England) do they sell physical copies of mathematics and physics textbooks that you can pick up and peruse before buying?
The obvious answer is Foyles on Charing Cross Road, but lately the selection of maths & physics textbooks there has been pitiful. They're barely bothering to stock textbooks any more (it didn't look much better for the adjacent chemistry and biology sections either), and lately when I've gone, it's not sated my need to physically shop for textbooks.
Does anyone have a brand (or type) of decaffeinated coffee they would like to share? My wife and I like bold roasts and we're trying to cut down on our caffeine intake. We'd like to still drink a lot of coffee, but not feel jittery.
