Today I feel determined to have a good game dev day but I'm not sure what this would look like? Should I code only to find I'm no good at it? Work on graphics at the wrong resolution? Record music in the wrong key? Maybe design a scene that I'll later realise is unnecessary? Perhaps spend all day on a bad animation. The endless possibilities... #gamedev#csharp#gamedesign#composing#animation#adventuregamefriday
There are plenty of engine builders out there, where typically you get your engine up and running and then get to turn the crank once or twice before the game ends.
What if, instead, we had an engine maintainer?
Your economic engine would be up and running at the beginning of the game. The task is to maintain it by:
Repairing or replacing components that wear out over time
Performing preventive maintenance to prevent wear
Fine-tuning the engine’s efficiency
Adapting the engine to a (relatively slowly) changing environment
Occasionally recognizing that an entire multi-component part of your engine needs to be replaced. You’d want to cannibalize what you can to both avoid the expense of buying new things and the cost of disposing of waste; limited space means you do have to get rid of your waste.
ok so the demo (for my beautiful new game) is going to launch within the next few days...
itch first (because it's gentle there)
then steam (so i can take my time to do it right)
i'm hyped! watch this space!! 🎉✨😱🥳 #GameDev#IndieGameDev#GameDesign#IndieGame#IndieGames
What's the secret of keeping a player in the flow, if there's something in the loop that instantly breaks it? E.g. level up with strategic choices during fast-paced FPS.
Wow, it's been a while! In less than an hour at 5pm ET / 2pm PT, I'll be chatting with gamedevs Abhi of Venba, Marina Ayano Kittaka of Sephonie, Natalie Tin Yin Gan & @remysiu of 1000xResist!
We'll have a profound talk on how our respective games and characters explore cultural memory, hope, and trauma.
You can watch the panel here, as part of Fellow Traveller's #LudoNarraCon !
I do not have Pacific Islander ancestry myself, but I have been practicing the Samoan art of Siva Afi (fireknife dancing) for 12 years. I worked with world-champion fireknife dancers, Samoan speakers, and a Samoan artist to create a card game about it:
I'm talking about the challenges of making a building strategy game playable with game pads and handheld consoles. Let me know what you think! #gamedev#gamedesign#indiegame
In a #TTRPG#GameDesign you generally have Physical(STR/DEX/CON), Mental(INT), Social(CHR), and Spiritual(WIS) focused Stats. However you only tend to take Physical Damage/healing. Some games have Mental Damage/Healing (Insanity). A few have Spiritual Damage (Mana Points/time to recharge). Almost none have Social Damage (Embarrassment).
What sort of mechanic or approach would you take to Mental, Social, and Spiritual Damage / Healing, if you were designing a game from the ground up?
