A lot of understandable outrage over the felling of the iconic tree at #SycamoreGap on #HadriansWall .. but so many other old trees are chopped down for widening motorways or other building projects every day .. saw this image and poem from #SimonHeywood which sums it up for me.
One of the UK’s most photographed trees has been “deliberately felled” in an apparent act of vandalism.
A 16 year old teenager has been arrested for allegedly cutting down the Sycamore Gap tree next to the historic UNESCO World Heritage site Hadrian’s Wall, built 1,900 years ago to guard the furthest northwestern frontier of the Roman Empire.
“The 300-year-old #tree, set in a dramatic dip near crumbling Roman walls, drew photographers and tourists from all over the world until it was felled in a suspected act of vandalism.”

I’m gutted at the news of the felling of the iconic #Sycamore at Sycamore Gap on #HadriansWall last night. Made globally famous by the scene in Costner’s #RobinHood Prince of Thieves. So it seems churlish, indeed very ‘I have my environmental history hat on’, to note that the Sycamore was introduced into #Britain in the 15-16th century, at least 300 years after the 3rd Crusade, the period in which the #Film was set. None of this detracts, of course, from the utter vandalism of last night’s act.
"I’ve spoken with many people today who are profoundly upset at the loss of this tree in what will always be known as Sycamore Gap. It bore a pastoral load in its strength and beauty" ~Bishop of Newcastle (UK), via the bird site
Nearly 200yo sycamore tree at Hadrians Wall near the village of Once Brewed, chopped down.
I'm actually absolutely devastated and in tears seeing that the #SycamoreGap tree has been felled overnight! It's a symbol of #Northumberland at #HadriansWall and it's now gone!
Just heard the news about the tree at Sycamore Gap. Absolutely abhorrent that someone would willfully destroy something that brings so many people joy. What is wrong with some people
I started my hike along the Hadrians' Wall path yesterday. We covered 14 miles in warm, windy weather from Bowness On Solway to Carlisle. I enjoyed the great scenery and managed to ignore my sore feet! I found the headstone for my 4th great grandfather at St Michael's Church in Burgh by Sands. Walking in the footsteps of my ancestors... #hike #hadrianswall #genealogy #familyhistory #walking
