Today in Labor History March 11, 1811: Luddites attacked looms near Nottingham, England, because automation was threatening their jobs. At the time, workers were suffering from high unemployment, declining wages, an “endless” war with France and food scarcity. On March 11, they smashed machines in Nottingham and demonstrated for job security and higher wages. The protests and property destruction spread across a 70-mile area of England, reaching Manchester. The government sent troops to protect the factories and made machine-breaking punishable by death.

Today in Labor History February 19, 1990: After a 10-month strike, rank-and-file miners at the Pittston Coal Co. ratified a new contract. Ninety-eight miners and a minister occupied a Pittston Coal plant in Carbo, Virginia, inaugurating the year-long strike. While a one-month Soviet coal strike dominated the U.S. media, the year-long Pittston strike received almost no media coverage. The wildcat walkouts involved 40,000 miners in Virginia, West Virginia and Kentucky. Over 2,000 people occupied Camp Solidarity. Miners and their families engaged in Civil Disobedience, pickets, work stoppages and sometimes sabotage, vandalism and violence. Over 4,000 were arrested.

Today in Labor History January 19, 1812: Luddites torched Oatlands Mill in Yorkshire, England. In order to avoid losing their jobs to machines, Luddites destroyed equipment in protest. Their movement was named for Ned Ludd, a fictional weaver who supposedly smashed knitting frames after being whipped by his boss. Luddite rebellions continued from 1811-1816, until the military quashed their uprising.

Chant no more your old rhymes about bold Robin Hood
His feats I but little admire
I will sing the Achievements of General Ludd
Now the Hero of Nottinghamshire.

The sentiment for this poem comes from the fact that Robin Hood was a paternalistic hero, a displaced aristocrat who stole from his class brethren and gave to the poor; whereas Ned Ludd represented the autonomy and self-sufficiency of the working class.

@ExtinctionR It’s much much worse.

A painting’s “value” is given by the subjective appreciation of the beholder. However it contains no life in it. Apart from perhaps some microorganisms living on its surface, it’s a sterile lifeless object.

A rainforest’s “value” can’t be quantified in a similar way. One m2 of it holds millions or billions of living beings and constitutes a living ecosystem. How do you price that?

More Pride flags celebrating local Pride week vandalised in Finland. Video featuring burning flags and a bible quote circling in social media.

I’ve lost count how many there’s been this year, (maybe 4?) but I remember quite vividly the one where a far right nazi planning several terrorist attacks, manufacturing 3D printed weapons etc, turned out to be the same person who vandalised pride flags on video in Oulu some time ago.

Pride flags in front of Masku Municipality were destroyed on Monday evening, the municipality said on its Facebook page. The flags were lowered and burned. It was the first time the municipality had flown flags during Pride week, which began on Monday. Mayor Miira Raiskila said new flags would be put up on Tuesday. - The strings on the poles have been cut, but we will get the flags up today one way or another," says Ms Raiskila. Video footage of the event is circulating on social media. The video shows a burnt Pride flag and a phrase referring to a biblical text. "This is unfortunately common," says Seta's general secretary.
According to Kerttu Tarjamo, Secretary General of the human rights organisation Seta, the vandalisation of rainbow flags at various Pride events has been regrettably common. - This year, for example, Pride flags were vandalised during a rainbow mass in Pori. In Lappeenranta, for example, flags have also been vandalised," says Tarjamo. This year, there will be around 50 Pride events across Finland. - Vandalism at rainbow events is an act of hatred towards rainbow people. The rainbow flag is known as a symbol of sexual and gender minorities, so it is very likely that there is a hate motive or at least a desire to send a message that people are not welcome in the area," says Tarjamo. On its Facebook page, the municipality of Masku says it is taking the necessary steps to investigate what happened.
- Everyone's human dignity is inviolable and we will be visible and vocal about it. The municipality will take the necessary measures to investigate what happened and bring the perpetrator to justice," the Facebook post reads. Pride flags have been raised on the flagpoles at Masku City Hall for the duration of Turku Pride week. Updated on 8/22/2023 at 11:42 am: Interview with Kerttu Tarjamo, secretary general of Seta, added. Read more about topic minorities. Joensuu Pride flag vandalised - city marketing director: 'Sad'
