Another restoration finished :)

HP Apollo 425e (aka HP Series 9000 Model 425e)

  • complete cleaning
  • replaced 3 tantalums (1 burned, 2 no resistance)
  • 3D printed drive rails (were missing)
  • implanted IBM 9GB SAS

This is interesting: I've installed FreeBSD 14.0-RELEASE on that laptop. However, every time I try to check the system's status with 'top', it crashes. I suspected this was due to the absence of a battery, so I tested this theory with the command sysctl hw.acpi.battery and - boom - experienced the same crash.

It seems that FreeBSD does not function well on a laptop without a battery.

Can anyone suggest a workaround or solution? I'd like to avoid re-inserting the 9-years-old worn-out battery.

Personally, I’m never ever buying another #HP product. The company seeks to control its customers, including printer and PC buyers, in unacceptable ways imo. Trying to update firmware on an HP Spectre X360 laptop from linux, but I can't extract a .bin file from the downloadable .exe file. Has something changed in this space? The .exe file extracts only another .exe file!

Ok turns out you can create a usb to boot from, but this has to be done from INSIDE WINDOWS and ON AN HP COMPUTER! Not really helpful!
