Listen, I love #fedora. Bar none it's one of the best distros out there, but more than that it's been the stomping grounds for #linux#desktop innovation. Don't believe me? You've got #Wayland, #PipeWire, contributions to #xdg, to the Linux kernel proper, etc. Fedora is more than a distro, it's a #comunity of people who wish to push the envelope.
That's why I am for #plasma becoming the new workstation standard, because of the good it did #GNOME. Let me explain...
When Ubuntu ditched #GNOME many years ago in favour of Unity, GNOME lost a sizable amount of users required to actually cultivate feedback, participation, which would in turn foster development.
As #Fedora#Workstation made GNOME to be the flagship desktop, it helped to cultivate the resources necessary to get GNOME where it is today.
Now the GNOME foundation is the most established desktop environment out there, thanks to the good work of both the GNOME and in part the Fedora communities.
In conclusion, if #plasma were to become the default DE of #fedora#workstation, I believe it would be the shot in the arm the #KDE community needs to become as polished and as consistent as #GNOME.
Whereas GNOME has strict #UX, Plasma is the "design-it-yourself" desktop, using various mechanisms and internal standards, which arguably is so hard to do, that desktop ricing isn't even comparable.
It's a great desktop, but needs some love from users and devs. I think Fedora can help with that.
Borislav Stanimirov described how he used an Android smartphone to set up a backend software development workstation. Not an optimal desktop experience, but still an interesting experiment with some practical value.
Finally got my new setup finished! I was having a difficult time finding a good table top, so I ended up building my own, and I have to say the result exceeded my expectations. I may end up putting the PC under the desk if I find I need more room.
Also, I think this is the best I've ever achieved as far as cable management goes.
Great #CPU#performance and optional, dedicated graphics in an infinitely thin and light magnesium chassis, paired with a 16-inch 16:10 high-resolution display and a big 80 Wh #battery.
@Linux_Is_Best Let's just say that this will at least make the fans run higher and shorten the lifespan of the MOSFETs if #Dell didn't design their board with sufficient over-capacity in mind.
There's a reason #Workstation|s and Servers only get shipped with a handful of configurations in terms of CPU.
Mind you this obvious like with the #ThinkstationTiny P360 where this is very obvious as the highest tier is like i9-12900T or a i7-12700 because it can only handle a 90W CPU and a 75W GPU in it.
Speaking of the Ensoniq VFX-SD, it was advertised as the “First Music Production Synthesizer”. They must have meant within the Ensoniq family of synthesizers, because this came out in 1989, and before it, there is at least one that precedes it, in 1988. See reply to learn what it is.
Ok so in the end I finished migrating my main desktop Linux from SSD to NVME disk.
I've been super-lazy about it, bought the nvme disk 2 months ago, took weeks before installing it on the motherboard, and took other weeks until concluding all the steps.
Guess what? A new possibly very long thread, this time about Athena, my next main #workstation as a successor to Sargo (the current Mac Pro 5,1 setup) based around the #Lenovo#ThinkStation P500. I already bought a low spec P500 and an 18-core #Xeon E5-2699 v3 CPU upgrade; later on I'll get 64 GB of DDR4 ECC memory, a so called "Flex M.2 Adapter" for the special Flex slot on the motherboard and maybe an additional GPU alongside my new Radeon Pro W5700 for KVM's and PCI passthrough.
Hello #Mastodon, this is my intro 👋🏾
I'm in my 30s, #neurodivergent,
born in India but brought to Southern Germany at the age of 3 (heavily traumatised by that 😵💫),
now living in #Berlin (good place for #PoC)
huge love for #linux and #vim ,
currently using #neovim but still questioning the need of it, #manjaro user, #FinalFantasy and #Nintendo enjoyer,
love to decorate and upgrade my #homeoffice / #workstation,

Need a portable #workstation? May we suggest the M2 Gen 5.
Want an ultra-mobile #laptop? Check out the XE or Ir14.
Looking to replace your #desktop tower? See the compact NX.
I need to look into re-learning #thermodynamics. #Motherboard says the #CPU#core#temps are around 10C higher than what the #heatsinks are (I built my own #sensor set for this machine - because I wanted to.)
Granted, this is one of the old E5-2600v2 series #motherboards in the computer I'm typing on right now.. (different computer, not the server - waiting for #Amazon to deliver my new #frelling CPU coolers), an X9DRH-7TF by SuperMicro, so maybe that's #normal?
Yeah, I know, WAY overkill for a #workstation, but it's also a #pull from a previous #server iteration, so...
Yes, I'm #weird. I upgrade my #servers, then my #workstations get all the old #parts.
