Listen, I love . Bar none it's one of the best distros out there, but more than that it's been the stomping grounds for innovation. Don't believe me? You've got , , contributions to , to the Linux kernel proper, etc. Fedora is more than a distro, it's a of people who wish to push the envelope.

That's why I am for becoming the new workstation standard, because of the good it did . Let me explain...

hopland,
@hopland@snabelen.no avatar

When Ubuntu ditched many years ago in favour of Unity, GNOME lost a sizable amount of users required to actually cultivate feedback, participation, which would in turn foster development.

As made GNOME to be the flagship desktop, it helped to cultivate the resources necessary to get GNOME where it is today.

Now the GNOME foundation is the most established desktop environment out there, thanks to the good work of both the GNOME and in part the Fedora communities.

hopland,
@hopland@snabelen.no avatar

In conclusion, if were to become the default DE of , I believe it would be the shot in the arm the community needs to become as polished and as consistent as .

Whereas GNOME has strict , Plasma is the "design-it-yourself" desktop, using various mechanisms and internal standards, which arguably is so hard to do, that desktop ricing isn't even comparable.

It's a great desktop, but needs some love from users and devs. I think Fedora can help with that.

Borislav Stanimirov described how he used an Android smartphone to set up a backend software development workstation. Not an optimal desktop experience, but still an interesting experiment with some practical value.

(Part 1/1) # Workstation Flex

Finally got my new setup finished! I was having a difficult time finding a good table top, so I ended up building my own, and I have to say the result exceeded my expectations. I may end up putting the PC under the desk if I find I need more room.

Also, I think this is the best I've ever achieved as far as cable management goes.

About to double my RAM soon for my Dell Precision T3600.

From 32GB of Ram to the maximum of 64GB of Ram.

I even managed to get matching sticks (same make, model) as the ones already in the system.

@Linux_Is_Best Let's just say that this will at least make the fans run higher and shorten the lifespan of the MOSFETs if didn't design their board with sufficient over-capacity in mind.
There's a reason |s and Servers only get shipped with a handful of configurations in terms of CPU.

Mind you this obvious like with the P360 where this is very obvious as the highest tier is like i9-12900T or a i7-12700 because it can only handle a 90W CPU and a 75W GPU in it.

Speaking of the Ensoniq VFX-SD, it was advertised as the “First Music Production Synthesizer”. They must have meant within the Ensoniq family of synthesizers, because this came out in 1989, and before it, there is at least one that precedes it, in 1988. See reply to learn what it is.

Ok so in the end I finished migrating my main desktop Linux from SSD to NVME disk.

I've been super-lazy about it, bought the nvme disk 2 months ago, took weeks before installing it on the motherboard, and took other weeks until concluding all the steps.

Call me mister lazy 😄

Guess what? A new possibly very long thread, this time about Athena, my next main as a successor to Sargo (the current Mac Pro 5,1 setup) based around the P500. I already bought a low spec P500 and an 18-core E5-2699 v3 CPU upgrade; later on I'll get 64 GB of DDR4 ECC memory, a so called "Flex M.2 Adapter" for the special Flex slot on the motherboard and maybe an additional GPU alongside my new Radeon Pro W5700 for KVM's and PCI passthrough.

Stock photo of the internals of the P500 seen from the side.
