Checking out all the announcements today from Dell, HP, Microsoft, Samsung, Acer, Asus, and Lenovo! I did a live recording of my reactions.
Windows on ARM is getting REALLY exciting! Here are some things to look out for while shopping a new "AI" laptop!
Acer's well enough known for laptops and monitors in Australia... but vacuum cleaners and air fryers? That's quite the switch, as the company's launched Acerpure locally. Here's my early impressions:
Negli ultimi tempi ho sentito parlare sempre di più di #HaikuOS; per chi non lo conoscesse, è un sistema #UnixLike#OpenSource, purtroppo acerbo in stabilità e compatibilità ma estremamente promettente in termini di esperienza utente. Diciamo che è Linux senza strane inconsistenze e che non richiede di imparare tremila cose per essere usato, ma è anche estremamente più prestante del sistema desktop pinguinastico moderno medio (è una bugia colossale che Linux non abbia bloatware e che giri bene), oppure che è macOS senza gestione dittatoriale e senza cacca a forma di mela dentro… qualunque paragone preferiate. 😏️
Boh, vedo sempre di più che viene usato sui laptop, viene testato di più, proprio prima ho visto questo video di #ActionRetro che lo usa giornalmente su un Thinkpad. Volevo provarlo #BareMetal già credo anni fa, ma non funzionava, non voleva partire. Ma ora, visto che a pare siamo finalmente alla #Beta 4, e che le cose si stanno muovendo in termini di compatibilità sia hardware che software (tante applicazioni libere di uso comune per task disparate stanno venendo portate), ho provato a flashare la ISO live su chiavetta, avviarla sul mio portatile #Acer Aspire v3-572G, e, incredibilmente… 🤫️
#Haiku funziona! Questa schermata l’ho catturata direttamente da lì, e ho #testato qualche cosa. Posso collegarmi al WiFi, anche 5 GHz, usare il terminale per collegarmi via SSH al server, la riproduzione audio funziona (ma ahimé non vanno le schede audio USB), e la grafica 3D anche (chissà se accelerata o meno). Il browser WebPositive è rottissimo e malperformante, ma mi sorprende funzioni abbastanza da permettermi di loggare in WordPress, superando il reCAPTCHA, e scrivere questo post tutto da lì (ma ho dovuto attivare il Classic Editor, quello moderno non inviava le modifiche al sito). In ogni caso, c’è Falkon sull’app store integrato, che usa il motore Chromium e dicono sia invece ottimo (e su Linux va OK). Non ho potuto installare cose da lì però, perché mi chiede di riavviare per applicare le modifiche (?), ma sono da live come detto prima. Magari poi installerò l’OS residente proprio sulla pennetta per provarlo meglio, per sfizio. La funzione per cambiare la luminosità del display però non funge, e non ho nemmeno provato cose riguardo la batteria. Il touchpad funziona quasi perfettamente, anche lo scorrimento con due dita (non scontato), ma non va purtroppo il click destro soft, e alla sensibilità massima è comunque lentissimo da muovere. I mouse USB funzionano però (duh). 🙃️
Edit dopo 2 minuti: LMAO è appena andato in kernel panic, dopo che il MicroBlog ha iniziato a dire che la sessione di login era scaduta, mi si sono aperte tante schede di login, e ho tentato di riavviare il browser… vabbé, può capitare.
I thought I might be able to install #linux on an old #Acer#chromebook, but after a few searches, it doesn't look like you can completely replace #ChromeOS.
Is there a chrome-book equivlent for easily managing a DNS block list, on device?
Yes, I can run something on my home netwok, but what I'm looking for is an easy, on-device solution, like installing a "local vpn" like #personalDNSFilter does on my phone, into which I can put my own block list, and easily add and remove entries.

It's an old model (Acer One D257) Processor is Intel Atom. Memory is 1GB DDR3 with 320 GB of HDD. I currently Have MX 21 running on it, but I need to reinstall because I forgot the root password. Since I'm reinstalling the OS, I thought I'd ask here for recommendations for an OS that makes the most of this oldie.

Será que alguém em #Campinas quer um teclado "novo" (é velho, mas nunca foi usado e está ainda embalado). Estou doando! O problema é que é no layout alemão...
Se reparar na foto, parece que está descascando no canto. Não está. Isso é a película original de proteção que eu nem retirei.
Acompanhando esse maravilhoso teclado, estou doando também um #Acer Revo 3600. Esse eu usei. É velho, mas eu conservo muito bem meus equipamentos. Tem processador Intel Atom, 4GB de RAM, 512GB de HD (se bem me lembro), NVidia ION, saída VGA e HDMI.
Nos últimos anos, eu o usava como #TVBox. Instalei nele um linux bem levinho e rodava apenas o Kodi. Ficava bem bonito. Mas não aguenta filmes com resoluções mais altas de hoje em dia (até 720p vai bem).
Just had to "fix" my Mum's Windows 11 laptop as "the cursor has disappeared."
Turns out the F10 key on her #Acer laptop turns the touchpad on and off.
What fucking bullshit is this? Our unintentional touch detection is so shit we put a button on the keyboard to turn the touchpad off. When you restart there's briefly a graphic on screen to tell you, which is non-obvious unless you know you've done it, with no help on how to turn it back on, and the key changes between models. Fucking gahhh!
#Computer question: Both external and internal (?) mics (edit: speakers) on my new #acer laptop are really awful. Or it could be the soundcard as well. If I turn to 100% the sound is what I'd call normal volume. On my old acer that's at about 30%. It is better with headphones, but if I record internally it's still bad. I downloaded new drivers, I checked in the system settings but none of this helps. Any ideas? Better #soundcard maybe?
