I love it. There’s a poll ongoing about whether folks would ban a Meta (Instagram/Facebook) instance and people are like “well, I’d give them the benefit of the doubt.”
I really have no words.
Is it learned helplessness? Stockholm Syndrome? Masochism? Something else?
@aral
It's troubling the wonderful sanctuary here is looking the other way and allowing #Meta/#Facebook and all it's bad influence to infect us here
I don't want to even know what meta is doing
I do not run an instance, so I think the pool is not for me. However, I'll say that I definitely would quit an instance which didn't block Meta for harvesting my data
"Human! We used to be exactly like them. Flawed. Weak. Organic. But we evolved to include the synthetic. Now we use both to attain perfection. Your goal should be the same as ours.
We are the Borg. Lower your shields and surrender your ships.
We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Your culture will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile."
I was recently at an AI (strategy) symposium of about roughly 15 diverse people from different companies.
We could have developed such a strategy pretty quickly. #Suckerberg has thousands of employees and consultants.
The danger to his biz model is so obvious...
I do think it's a victory because in the end, the fediverse will always have the means to not federate with #meta but the fact such big player adopt the protocol is going to bring a furry of other actors to potentially adopt the protocol, it's like "email" being adopted, yes some emails providers are bad but the internet won by having a common protocol for one to one interaction. The same can happen for #activitypub!
This is brewing inside of #Meta. And other reports claimed it would have "ActivityPub" support meaning that in some ways would be "Fediverse-compatible" - who knows?
The Brooklyn Public Library has announced that any teenager in America is now eligible for a Brooklyn Public Library card.
Teens can sign out ebooks + audiobooks from wherever they
live.
The move is designed to combat censorship, with some titles listed as "always available."
While this is a nice move bolstering general education, how do they register? Do they have to provide identification?
Let's remember that the #Feds already used #Meta's data for picture ID search over a million times. During the #Inquisition, possessing heathen and otherwise banned books could cost you dearly. Who knows, what the future holds, and a teen certainly does not want to go "on record" with a book banned in his/her...
As a status symbol which earned them more views and clout, to us non-elite it always was a badge of shame. The elite are now stripped of their privilege and now want to pretend to sympathize with those they looked down on before.
Shame on #Twitter and #Meta for doing this...shame on the former blue check mafia who only cared when their #privilege was lost
If you see an account named thegx.ca/forum (thegx@…) pop up on your servers please suspend it. Some bastard has been setting up spam accounts all over. I’ve lost count of how many I’ve blocked and it’s getting annoying.
“But at the very least, if a server goes down, it should not be catastrophic to you. Your social world shouldn’t live inside an app, or depend on a company staying solvent. It should, and could, be much bigger than that."
The tech industry is abuzz about a new standard for social networking that is more open, more user-centric, and potentially more powerful than #Twitter and #Facebook. But we’ve been here before.
