THREAD: Some of you came across the HRW report last month which highlighted the killings of Ethiopian migrants on the border by Saudi border guards. It made for tough reading. To further understand what they go through and the cold blooded nature of the killings, I produced this based analysis parsing through satellite imagery and TikTok videos, using the HRW's report & my interviews with two survivors. There won't be anything graphic here, just eyeopening.

I want to hear about your cats, gin (or non-alcoholic libations), and hobby unrelated to computers.

Also what are you doing when you leave tech?

THREAD: This thread discusses the December 2020 forced expulsion of people inhabiting farming communities in a disputed border area claimed by both Ethiopia 🇪🇹 and Sudan🇸🇩. #Osint data appears to suggest that Sudanese troops may have carried out atrocities when it removed hundreds if not thousands of Ethiopians from the Al Fashaga triangle. Nobody has properly documented the expulsions and there's not enough evidence to draw conclusions.

THREAD: This is a 2021 satellite image showing part of a typical farming village in a rural part of Ethiopia's Oromia region. A few thousand people lived here, tended to the land and cattle, a simple life.

In June 2022, it was the site of a horrifying massacre of 300-400 civilians. Armed militants affiliated with either the Ethiopian state, or the rebel Oromo Liberation Army, targeted the ethnic Amhara minority in the area and didn't spare women, children or the elderly.

Part of a farming community captured in a 2021 satellite image in Ethiopia's Oromia region. Trees, forestry and farm land can be seen, as well as a paved road which bisects the small community. Homes and businesses on either side of the road can be seen.

REMINDER
Today’s surveillance cameras perform very well in low light conditions. In theaters, or any other public space, never assume that you can’t be seen because it’s dark. You can be seen. You are being seen. You are being recorded.

Time for another puzzle.

I took this just a couple of minutes ago.

  1. What bridge is pictured?
  2. What flight am I on?
  3. Extra credit: what is my connecting flight?

As usual, CW guesses or solutions to avoid spoilers.

My latest story is the cover page of this weekend's @thecontinent newspaper. Catch my war crimes investigation which probes allegations from 's month long conflict in its northern Amhara region. This is the first story with visual evidence of abuses by Ethiopian troops, & features eyewitness testimony, geolocation of a recently surfaced viral execution video & exclusive comments from a rebel commander we reached by phone. Yeah it's grim. I will CW from this point on.

Found some developed film (120) in my grandmother's jewelry box.

We see a four-wheel version of the B-36 Peacemaker, a white rocket exhibit, a black buzz bomb on stands.

Old cars, a family with children in the shade under the massive wing.

Where was this, and when?

Here are my guesses as to why various #OSINT and #NAFO accounts have essentially gone dormant on #Mastodon:

  1. Not enough followers and/or not enough engagement (likes, boosts) to make it worth posting
  2. Uploading videos and pictures is often error prone (see @Tendar)
  3. No ability to quote post
  4. Creating threads and how they are displayed in the main timeline is pretty lackluster (see @ChrisO_wiki)
  5. Difficult to search for meaningful content (before Mastodon v4.2 rolled out)

Recently on a local facebook buy/sale/trade group someone put their house on the website for a ridiculously low amount (under $2000) and said that the house is not livable and needs to be torn down. There is a picture of the house and the city where it is located. He also used his real facebook account.

I exercised my budding skills and found out some interesting info. First, I found that he lived in that city and when I checked the address, I saw that the house is the same one from the facebook group. I now know that he did at least live in the house at one time. However according to the county tax assessor, he is not the owner of the house.

I wrote back to him privately with these facts. I might actually buy the house for the land and build something on it. Of course, I may have freaked him out by replying with much more info than he had given. I'm just doing my due diligence and I will need to know for sure that the house is legit before I spend any money.

Russian equipment losses in Ukraine surpass 15,000, says Oryx OSINT group (kyivindependent.com)

So from an OSINT standpoint, how are we feeling about Threads?

Are we in a wait and see mode?

Cause I feel like they'll fuck up a bunch before we get to a steady, useful place.

Not to mention they have quite a few restrictions on content.

Been a while since I've posted any challenges here.

  1. Whose corporate headquarters an I standing in front of?

Time for another puzzle! This was from a family vacation many years ago.

  1. What amusement park was I at?
  2. What ride am I on? Can you identify the approximate location within the ride?
  3. Roughly was the photo taken? Provide "not before" and "not after" bounds (although if you think you can narrow it down to a specific day, be my guest!)

As usual, please CW guesses or solutions to avoid spoilers for other people.

A useful thing for analysis of activity was that each tweet has the time in was created embedded in the ID - and can extract it!

Like tweets, IDs also have embedded timestamps in them, and Unfurl can parse them:

This means that as long as you have the URL of the tweet/toot, you can determine when it was posted - even if it has been deleted or made private!

Apparently the OSINT community over on the dead bird... is in shambles. "..what the current war in Israel and Gaza has made clear in recent days is that there are many verified, popular accounts on Twitter that use the OSINT term to give legitimacy to shoddy work that only creates more confusion. What exists now is a profit and engagement driven ecosystem of non-experts who in some cases may be spreading videos for the clout and cash, rather than to inform readers about what is actually true.
