@davidbisset most of my stuff is RSS now, but more sites need to really support it at a standard. It makes them less money, but hopefully they can get over that. I'm hoping #Discourse integrates #ActivityPub more, they have it in the early stages as an extension. There's also the #phpbb forum software that is working on polished Activitypub support as well. So I'm hoping we get the start of a revival of forums in 2024. I already saw momentum with #fedi blogs last year as well.
@underlap content migration has historically been a difficult problem to solve simply because all these companies and softwares operate in pseudo-competition with one another.
For example #nodebb can migrate posts from #phpBB#vBulletin etc., but it's all custom migrators.
Something as simple as a common format for data portability would go a long way towards ease of content migration.
I am not certain many users elect to use or not use platforms based on portability though.
I couldn't find any of my posts, which is probably for the best, but it was so cool to be on the site again, see my old buddies' usernames and profiles, and remember all the conversations and laughs.
I'll never really be in that place or moment in time with all those people again, but I'm glad I can go visit and relive the memories. :)
Qualcosa sta funzionando!!
"'The threadiverse', aka #fediverse group servers like #guppe, #lemmy and #kbin are all based on the premise that each community is hosted on one instance, but users and posts can come from all over. So it's like any normal #phpBB-style forum, except you use your own user instead of having to register and check everywhere.
Makes sense to me, and I'm not saying that they should do it any other way, but this is exactly how mailing lists work."
@narc0tic_bird@c1b0 a #phpBB -like #forum software that works with #ActivityPub would be pretty sweet. Surprised that doesn't exist yet, as it'd be a perfect format to work with ActivityPub.
I think we can all agree that if Reddit’s recent bullshit ends up meaning people go back to running old school forums it’ll be the absolute funniest possible outcome
