  1. Why has the # hashtag button disappeared from the formatting bar in Ivory?
  2. When is Ivory going to support threads?
khoji,

@ivory
There used to be a # button here. It’s been gone for months. IPhone 12 Pro Max.

By threads I mean a linked, numbered series of toots. Normally achieved with the first one public and the subsequent ones unlisted. And/Or with a warning with the same title on all.

One of the most annoying things about being an English-language content creator are the Americans who insist that everything must be about them.

I can make a video that never mentions the US once, and I will get hundreds of responses about the US.

I will get people claiming that I'm wrong because of some issue unique to the US.

I will get Americans telling me that I have a moral responsibility to help them fix their cities, despite the fact that I'm not American and I don't live there.

khoji,

Ha! And the Germans ignored the cautionary tale of British Rail privatization and deregulation and made a total cockup of what used to be a fully functional Deutsche Bahn. Sigh…

It annoys me how people talk about using social media like it's a vice. And a female-coded one at that.

"Spend less time on social media" is trotted out a virtuous in the same way that "not eating a pint of ice cream" is.

Imagine if in the early days of movable type, there were people going around saying "don't read pamphlets, they are full of misinformation"

Social media is the primary way news is disseminated. It is superseding newspapers and TV as the primary vector of mass media. 1/

<<Imagine if in the early days of movable type, there were people going around saying "don't read pamphlets, they are full of misinformation">>
I don’t have hard historical data on this, but I suspect that they were. AFAIK pamphlets were quickly used to spread conspiracy theories and misinformation, just like any other free publication channel. People haven’t really changed all that much. 😎

Regierung: Nicht so hastig. Es ist noch nichts schlimmes passiert. Man kann ja mit denen argumentieren.
Volk: Jetzt haben sie aber die Macht übernommen und die Verfassung außer Kraft gesetzt. Was nun?
Exil-Regierung: Das hätte ja niemand kommen sehen können.

My hot take on the Vision Pro is the same as my hot take on every AR/VR/Mixed Reality headset produced in the past checks notes 20 years: "If most women can't use your product for 4 hours straight without throwing up, don't try to tell me that it's the future of anything." I said what I said.

Women can use a smartphone indefinitely without nausea. They can use a laptop indefinitely. A gaming console and TV indefinitely. But XR headsets cause motion sickness in most women in under an hour. 🤷🏿‍♂️

Not just women: I tried out an Oculus for ten minutes a couple of years ago and had nausea and vertigo for nearly a week.

For years I couldn’t understand why Americans had such an obsession with zombies, zombie movies and a possible “zombie apocalypse”. Now it’s beginning to dawn on me that it’s simply an awareness for the fact that it’s actually happening.

Does anyone else here use #audible ? Since I work on screens all day it’s become my preferred way to read novels. Over the last couple of years, Audible has been developing Netflix-style enshittification: You have to wade through deeper and deeper swamps of garbage to find something worth reading. This has got worse recently — many books seem worse than the most amateur fan fiction and it’s difficult to understand how they ever got published. Finding my next read has become an unpleasant chore.

khoji,

@BobHorowitz
Yes, also love the Fuji XF 10-24mm f4. But the Samyang 8mm rectilinear fisheye (I know, kind of an oxymoron, really just means it’s not circular) has a special quality all of its own. It’s also terrific for video when using an additional crop factor.

In a local art project schoolchildren were shown photos of town buildings and were asked to color over them. The results were then projected onto the actual buildings at night.

khoji,

@cthulku
Sorry, no idea — it was actually quite a while ago and I just happened to take this one shot with my phone one night as I walked past this place. All I could find was this video on the town’s World Kids Day project, when the car parks were taken over by kids activities. But that was later. https://youtu.be/q2Powsf3ntg?feature=shared

Can anyone tell me why @nostarch uses this weird typographical convention:

> The first paragraph after chapter start is typeset in larger size font than the body font.

I think this just looks really odd, like the result of a "paste with formatting" error. This plus the huge chapter number, graphics, inspirational quote (in another different font size), ragged typesetting, ... make for a very uneasy read.

khoji,

@ljrk @nostarch
I can see what they’re trying to achieve but apparently they couldn’t see that it didn’t work.
