Supermoon rising!

This was from ~20 minutes ago. Moon was low + big + yellow 😍

There were some interesting clouds all around too - non obscuring - but tricky to try to get a decent exposure for both (+ too lazy to try doing manual HDR 😅 )

The final Supermoon of the year. Unfortunately, it's a bit cloudy here, but there were a few minutes when it was less cloudy. So, with the help of my telescope, there was briefly something to see.

The moon looks bright and sliver. Particularly on the right side of the moon, the dark patches of the craters can be seen, even though a light band of clouds are obscuring the detail.

Full (almost*) Moon
Tonight and tomorrow will be the full moon, this time the "Harvest super" moon. It's not our biggest this year, but is our fourth and final 'supermoon' of the year and might be a little brighter than the others. In honour of this, I'll share a few of my favourite moon photos over the next day or so.
Have a great Thursday, Fedifriends.

Nice time lapse video of the late August super moon from the StreamTime Live ship webcam at Port Huron in Michigan. Looking over the St Claire River towards Sarnia in Canada. With two passing ships as a bonus.

This is a composite picture. I took my photo of the recent supermoon and my photo of migrating sandhill cranes and merged them.

Going back through about 5000 images I took the other night as the moon rose over the southern ocean. Found this one which i quite like,

Here is one of my pixel shift images of the moon produced with my Sony A7R V and my adapted Canon EF 70-300mm lens. I took a ton of photos so I still have to look through to see if I have any images that are a bit clearer. Honestly I think one of the single shots may be clearer than this one so I'll probably post another one sometime this week!

Great blue supermoon gallery really shows the photographic challenges: dynamic range of bright moon vs. dark foreground; depth of field with either moon or foreground in focus; site planning + mega supertelephoto lens to combine people and moon (as in the first shot). https://www.washingtonpost.com/photography/interactive/2023/super-blue-moon-photos

Took out the telescope last night. The moon was so bright I almost didn't find Saturn which was nearby, but I managed!

Last night's Full Super Blue Moon was fantastic (even with a light plume of smoke blowing in from Canada).

Did you see the rare blue supermoon last night?

AP reports: "If you missed it, it will be a long wait: The next blue supermoon isn’t until 2037."

The red full I photographed last night was in fact a blue supermoon.

A is when it’s full and at its closest point in its orbit around Earth.

A blue moon is what we call the second full moon in the span of a single month. According to NASA this phenomenon takes place about every 2.5 years.

A super blue moon, however is a lot rarer. The previous one was in 2009 and the next one is in 2037.

It’s my takeaway from this interesting article:
