I learned how to train LoRa AI models using open source StableDiffusion...

For the purpose of recreating the appearance of my 3D VR roleplaying character the results I got were amazingly good... almost frighteningly so.

I'll go through the process, results and some thoughts.

🧵 part 1of4

So much of the majority of AI art I see is terrible, bad looking and deformed. But with the right instruction's it doesn't have to be.

To accurately create fictional characters, this is probably the best method I've seen so far. There's work involved for training a model like this and not something you can just give a bunch of prompts and expect good results.

I started by gathering 64 screenshots of my 3D VRChat model from Blender in various positions and angles in different lighting while wearing select clothing of choice. Then I added proper tags describing each image in a respective text file.

Based on the training data and they keywords I specified, you can input various clothing alternatives including:

  • armor
  • jacket
  • shirt
  • barechest
Training took about 30 minutes using an RTX2080Ti GPU.

These guides were really useful for explaining complex concepts without having the understanding of the mathematics involved. It tends to get really complicated the deeper you delve into it.

The GUI for stable diffusion I'm using is completely open source written in Python for everyone to use https://github.com/AUTOMATIC1111/stable-diffusion-webui

I posted the LoRa AI training model publicly for download here for anyone curious: https://civitai.com/models/70408/cragsand-character-lora-sten-berglund

Since I really liked the results I ended retouching some parts manually. Things like eye color, fingers and random clutter where there were details that looked weird.

The end results are available in this gallery here: https://www.deviantart.com/cragsand/gallery/87722291/sten-berglund-character-artwork

End thoughts...

With this technology gaining traction I certainly sympathize with artists concerned about their profession being in danger. It's a topic worth discussing and what it's societal effects will be. I can certainly see it ending up being bad and requiring proper regulation.

One thought on my mind would be that these are "tools" for us to use, and as with any tools if they're good or bad ends up being determined by how they're used. It's not the technology itself that is the danger, but rather how corporations and bad interests may exploit it to the detriment of everyone else.

Curious to hear other's thoughts about this and how we can approach it in a way that is beneficial for everyone.

Thank you for reading the thread ! 💙

“Seemingly every major tech story of the past five or six years has been about the tech industry getting filthy rich while others suffered or losing unthinkable sums of money, with no counterbalance of “but at least we got this” to go with it. Tech’s heroes aren’t guys in turtlenecks who reveal the future in a cinematic presentation – they’re billionaire whiners crowing about “woke AI,” or buying up hundreds of acres of land in Hawaii, or claiming that remote work is bad after laying off thousands of people before taking a 10-day “digital detox” in French Polynesia.

Simply put, what is aspirational or inspirational about today’s tech leaders beyond the amount of money they make? The exciting thing about startups is (was?) that the average Joe could take the computer and make a billion-dollar program. There was a quasi-believable story that people – who were often weird, or awkward, or would have not succeeded elsewhere – were underdogs that hit it big through sheer force of will and skill.

Perhaps the problem is that tech has begun to painfully resemble the ways in which people in other industries get rich – by having the right connections or resemblance to other people rather than the best ideas or execution. This may have always been the case, too – it’s just that it was much easier to accept the beautiful lie when the heroes of the story weren’t so painfully villainous.”

Just a reminder for anyone curious, any money I make from my Etsy, Tiktok, twitch, merch store, affiliations, or etc. is set aside for tech tinkering and educational content. I do this all for fun, I do not pay myself anything from my LLC I have made. most I can see it paying for conventions and travel for more tech content. The only exception was a period after my layoff, I used the LLC funds to pay bills, but I immediately paid back the LLC when I got a job.

could i get some input/advice?

one thing that has been stressing me out a bit regarding my impending career path is (at the meta level) the potential need to dick over my own values and subject myself to (and contribute to!) a toxic work culture that doesn't benefit anyone. obviously there's a MILLION things going into that, and i'm going to have to compromise on a lot of things.

but the thing stressing me out at the moment is the idea that i need to start working on my portfolio right NOW, and i need to have a github account and get my profile to be full of a bunch of green squares, and i probably need to start writing articles and blog posts on relevant platforms to make myself an appealing candidate as well, make a LinkedIn, etc.

basically, i'm already going into debt as a student, but i feel like i also need to be visibly doing unpaid work in addition to school that contributes to corporate platforms (ie. github) by using them.

basically, i'm asking: am i wrong? is this true or do i actually have more freedom to build a portfolio on MY terms (ie. personal site only, without a git commit timeline, without "networking" on corporate-owned sites, etc.)?

i do want to go into nonprofit work more than anything, so maybe that would give me a little more room for showcasing my values in the way i handle my portfolio, but that doesn't mean i'll actually be able to find sustainable nonprofit work.

basically... how's it looking?

Creating NAS for dad to replace WD MyCloud, mostly media storage for playback on TV.
Did one for myself, thought I knew what I was doing. For myself I just set it to default SHR hybrid RAID.
Set up dad's with 1 drive and thought could add second for more storage, turns out no, more drives adds redundancy, which isn't what I wanted for this. So deleting storage pool and starting again with JBOD instead.
I take this as a learning experience.

Which programming language considers that the programmer may not always have all the spoons and energy cuz "life" and taking care of fam? That a programmer isn't just ppl with lots of resources and time?

I've never asked this question before. Thoughts? What features would this language have? Hmm. 🤔

ADDED: Esp. what would make this lang better when reading other ppl's code? 🤔 Maintenance work, not just new stuff.
