So, apparently people are doing an !

I'm Haui, , , enthusiast.

I'm not good with social stuff but I'm friendly. I host four services on my new : Lemmy, Mastodon, Matrix and Peertube. You can check them out on the respective addresses.

Besides that I own 4 lizards, 2 guineapigs and engage in anti-fascist, anti-corporate and neurodiversity activism.

Ask me for random tech facts and dusty dry humour.

Have a good one.

Greencloud, my favourite server provider who's not a giant, is making a 10th year anniversary campaign.

If you need a VPS or a place to tinker docker with, these guys' services, pricing and support (both pre and post-order era) are both great. https://lowendtalk.com/discussion/189385/greencloud-10th-birthday-sale-1010-plans-giveaways/p1

Those who have to host your sites or whatnot.

What's your backup strategy?

Backup solutions from hosting providers are usually expensive.

Thinking about just rsync to a local SSD?

Any insights are appreciated!

I said it before and will repeat again and again: people heavily underestimate the power of a <10€ VPS.

This morning, yet another request for the 'VPS privacy policy' when in fact they have a physical server rented from a major provider. We're now in an era where first we want to put our data 'in the cloud,' then we start shouting 'Oh my God, who knows how they handle my data! Give me tons of forms, bureaucracy, and certifications so I (maybe) sleep better at night!'

Really useful stuff. Been trying to use it with at work with some success. Might try to use it at home against my instance or with my awesome host (shameless plug for the wonderful https://tranquillity.se )

I would really like to overhaul my home computing. Definitely need to overhaul the networking but a combo of terraform and seems primo even if I have a few pets instead of cattle laying around.

Re.: easiest secure path to a blog that has as little reliance on third-party hosting as poss:

I may be lazy but ? + (or your hardware and software of choice, but that one is a well trodden path so at least there are set up guides telling you how to keep it safely updated easily)

I'm sure someone has tried formatting an old mobile phone with a cracked screen and putting () on it and self-hosting via that, but I have yet to see a guide written for the meanest intelligence (I.E.: for me!), but type-c to RJ45 dongles are cheap, and it might be capable of providing built-in UPS.

If you prefer a and don't require anything too fancy, then is a good place to start looking.

Good luck!

Due to a mistake on my part, I have come into possession of a spare until January '24. I don't have any use for it and thought about donating the power to a good cause. I have already set up a Snowflake proxy. Do you have any other ideas on what to do with it?

I have basic experience, but won't be able to put any ongoing effort into whatever is running on the machine. Also, no illegal stuff, obvs.

I just installed 'ncdu' on my to keep tabs on my storage.

Ncdu is a du viewer. It provides a fast and easy-to-use interface through famous du utility. It allows one to browse through the directories and show percentages of disk usage with ncurses library.

From root, run
$ sudo apt-get install ncdu

Then, from root, you simply run
$ ncdu <directory>

In the image below, I ran
$ ncdu /

Might be helpful for other selfhosted 's

Any VPS provider not supporting IPv6 nowadays is really lagging behind.

Well, I'm on a digital ocean droplet now. I liked having my own hardware but my home connection and power just aren't reliable enough for my mastodon account to live there. I use my mastodon as my primary social media and kinda rely on it for keeping up with the world. But I also want to own it. So I'll find less mission critical uses for my home server.

So, at home I have a laptop with a 4TB magnetic 2.5" external USB drive, which has a bunch of movies on it. This laptop has web server installed on it which allows access to the westerns. It also has which is connected to a I have in the US somewhere (not bragging, just saying). The connection at home is a 6Mbit/800k residential DSL line. Right now I am in the woods nowhere near home on another laptop, which is connected to my cell phone via hotspot, and which also has Wireguard connected to the same VPS. Through this VPN I am currently watching tonight's western. The Cariboo Trail [1950]

I've taken out a VPS from Ionos (formerly 1and1). It has 1 vCore, 1 GB RAM, 10GB SSD, unlimited traffic, root access, and a choice of distros, including Debian, Ubuntu & CentOS. Plesk is also offered free, but, I've not used it.

All for the ridiculously cheap price of £1 (£1.20 incl. VAT) per month. At this price it would be rude not to test it, which is what I'm doing.

The spec is limited, but, I can think of hundreds of uses at this price point.

friends, I'm looking for advice. Partly to . Partly because my NAS is old.

I'm looking to store normal stuff (images, etc.), but also some fairly substantial raw files, and private files from my music business.

I'm currently using g drive for pics, day-to-day files, and using a dual-drive for backup.

Was thinking of everything in the cloud (cheaper up front), but will prob buy similar solutions from two different companies for redundancy.

Was also thinking just spinning up a but needs to be easy for my non-techie wife to access her photos.

Thoughts?

Do you have any cheap VPS or server provider recommendations? I want to host some stuff for personal use and probably want to use alpine or lightweight debian install in the end.

Considering adding a cloud storage solution as an alternate cold storage mirror of about 40TB of drives.

Any recommendations? Feels like I’m going in circles trying to find a decently priced vendor with a viable interface.

Finally got around to updating to the latest version after....far too long! Bad me.

I'm also thinking of migrating it from my provider to a Dell OptiPlex 7040 in my office which has a more reliable internet connection than our !

It's not the beefiest server, but is more powerful than my little 2 vCPU 8GB box. Could do with some more memory though - will bump the 7040 from 8GB to 32GB before I migrate.
