"The #IndianOcean basin, the fastest warming basin in the world, will see accelerated #warming at a rate of 1.7°C-3.8°C per century during 2020-2100, a new research paper has projected, warning that this will lead to an increase in severe weather events, prolonged marine heatwaves and extreme Indian Ocean Dipole events that will influence the #monsoon and #cyclone development."
It's been predicted for decades, but idiots didn't care. Arctic #permafrost is now melting so fast that it's releasing more #greenhouse gases than it sinks. Even if we limited #warming to 1.5, a metric we've already surpassed, this melting would continue.
"The extreme weather. The melting glaciers. The weirdly warm oceans. They’re all the product of global warming, which is being driven by the release of the three most important heat-trapping gases: carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide.
And according to a new study from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, emissions of those three greenhouse gases continued to surge last year to historic highs."
James Hansen: "Accelerated global warming is the first significant change of global warming rate since 1970.
It is important because it confirms the futility of “net zero” hopium that serves as present energy policy and because we are running short of time to avoid passing the point of no return. " http://www.columbia.edu/~jeh1/mailings/2024/Hopium.MarchEmail.2024.03.29.pdf
"According to the researcher’s calculations, the isotherm — the boundary line of a temperature zone — is moving upward at 11.67m per year, a rate far higher than previous estimates.
The accelerated speed of #warming shown in the study poses a “severe threat” to the unique species sheltered in the mountains in a troubling sign for the environment."
…By examining the chemical composition of their (#SeaSponges’) skeletons, which the creatures built up steadily over centuries, the researchers have pieced together a new history of those earliest decades of #warming. And it points to a startling conclusion: #Humans have raised #GlobalTemperatures by a total of about 1.7°C, or 3.1°F, not 1.2°C, the most commonly used value.
Finding a "perfect Christmas tree" is going to be very, very, very far down on the importance list, IMHO. File next to "where to fly to on your next vacation as the climate warms". #climate#warming
Dec 15 EWE: #Warming — If you told me last year, that we’d see this in 2023, even with the knowledge that El Niño was coming, I would not have believed you. The extent of the jump in one year is something that meteorologists would never have imagined. https://twitter.com/WeatherProf/status/1735865078245740645#ClimateCrisis
👀 James Hansen: "Global warming is accelerating because the drive for warming, Earth’s energy imbalance, has doubled in the past decade. Measurement of the acceleration is hampered by unforced tropical (El Nino/La Nina) variability, but a good measuring stick is provided by warming between successive large El Ninos. " #climate#acceleration#warming#uhoh
" It was discovered that a staggering 87% of the #rivers studied were experiencing persistent #warming, while 70% were suffering from #deoxygenation. While this phenomenon is more commonly associated with larger bodies of water like oceans and lakes, its presence in flowing rivers is a growing concern that has largely gone unnoticed until now."
