Today let's spread the love!

@ someone in the comments who has made your Mastodon experience better, a little explanation as to why would be awesome too! You are welcome to do more than one.

EverydayMoggie,
@EverydayMoggie@sfba.social avatar

@mekkaokereke for educating about the underlying racism in society, yet somehow always managing to remain upbeat and accessible.
@futurebird for intriguing and imaginative ideas to explore, and for ants!
@ShmosKnows for an irrepressible joyous spirit.
@Wolven for Really Weird Shit.
@cheeaun for giving us Phanpy.
@aprilfollies for boosting a lot of entertaining and thought-provoking stuff I'd never see otherwise.
@alfredtwu for somehow making local housing both interesting and charming.
@scott for local politics (both a blessing and a curse!) and I think being the first person I followed here.
And the admin team at sfba.social for making the instance work flawlessly and keeping the users informed.

Well, this is intriguing — an online book club, powered by ActivityPub, moderated by the same great team that moderates this instance, with the capability of importing your current StoryGraph or Goodreads book ratings, and with more social features.

I’ve signed up as plinytheolder if anyone else wants to try it out.

I waffle over signing up, thinking no one could possibly be interested in what I'm reading. I don't know anybody else who reads, so I have no experience talking about books.

For the record, no, dishwashing liquid cannot be used in place of dishwasher detergent.

EverydayMoggie,
@EverydayMoggie@sfba.social avatar

It looks so festive! Fake snow!

One thing you can do if you're ever out of dishwasher detergent is to use baking soda instead. It doesn't clean quite as well but it won't foam up.

The "poisoning the blood" is getting a lot of attention ... as is should.

But can we also meditate on "immigrants"

Not "illegals" (gross term) just... every "immigrant" except when he goes to give examples he says:

“They’re poisoning the blood of our country... All over the world, they’re coming into our country, from Africa, from Asia, all over the world.”

Yes. "all over the world"

Feel like something was left out of that list?

EverydayMoggie,
@EverydayMoggie@sfba.social avatar

I ran across the term "European-Americans" not too long ago and a little light bulb flicked on. Why aren't we always using that nomenclature? Seems like we should be referring to people whose ancestors came to the US from Europe in the same manner as we describe people whose ancestors came from any other part of the world, no?

@futurebird

EverydayMoggie,
@EverydayMoggie@sfba.social avatar

It's no more an insult than lumping all Asians or all Africans into one category. And to be honest, I'm ok with offending people for a good cause.

It turns out that Target and Walgreens LIED to residents that a crime wave was what forced them to shut down their stores.

The real reason was underperformance. They slandered the cities they did business in because it was convenient.

Just your regular reminder that the real money behind is commercial real estate. Downtown areas — especially those like that steadfastly refused to build high-density housing and mixed-use areas for decades — are now suffering because the commuters they depend on for income are no longer showing up.

What a shame that $800B of “value” will be lost, but hey, that’s business, right? Surely we’re not going to nationalize the losses by forcing people to commute against their will, right? What’s that? Oh, we are?

“Remote work could cut the value of office buildings by $800 billion by 2030 — with San Francisco facing a 'dire outlook,' McKinsey predicts”

To belabor the point slightly: Cross gender play is all over the place in like every form of traditional theater.

5th century BCE Greek? 17th century CE Kabuki? Noh? Shakespeare? Chinese Opera? French opera? Spanish plays? 1920s film?

Like throw a dart. You almost can't hit a form where it hasn't been done at some point or in many cases is still done today.

I’m at the point in my life where I need to plan on leaving my family behind with a “passive” source of income beyond my life insurance. One of the most obvious things I can do is to buy houses (outside the SFBA, so I can afford them), and rent them out to tenants.

BUT I DO NOT WANT TO BE A LANDLORD. I fucking hate landlords.

What have you done to achieve this end?

EverydayMoggie,
@EverydayMoggie@sfba.social avatar

I achieved it by not having a family. So, just invent time travel, return to the past, and prevent your family from ever existing. Easy!

I so, so, so don't want to drive any new car that can do this:

A federal appeals court refused to bring back a class action lawsuit alleging four auto manufacturers had violated Washington state’s privacy laws by using vehicles’ on-board infotainment systems to record and intercept customers’ private text messages and mobile phone call logs.

The court ruled that the practice does not meet the threshold for an illegal privacy violation under state law, handing a big win to automakers Honda, Toyota, Volkswagen and General Motors, which are defendants in five related class action suits focused on the issue.

The plaintiffs had appealed a prior judge’s dismissal. But the appeals court ruled Tuesday that the interception and recording of mobile phone activity did not meet the Washington Privacy Act’s standard that a plaintiff must prove that “his or her business, his or her person, or his or her reputation” has been threatened.

A suit filed against Honda in 2021, argu[ed] that beginning in at least 2014 infotainment systems in the company’s vehicles began downloading and storing a copy of all text messages on smartphones when they were connected to the system.

An Annapolis, Maryland-based company, Berla Corporation, provides the technology to some car manufacturers but does not offer it to the general public, the lawsuit said. Once messages are downloaded, Berla’s software makes it impossible for vehicle owners to access their communications and call logs but does provide law enforcement with access, the lawsuit said.

Many car manufacturers are selling car owners’ data to advertisers as a revenue boosting tactic, according to earlier reporting by Recorded Future News. Automakers are exponentially increasing the number of sensors they place in their cars every year with little regulation of the practice.

Are Trump's lawyers naturally terrible, or do the conditions of their job, probably getting yelled at for making reasonable suggestions... train them to be terrible since it's the only way they can keep the job?

If they aren't getting paid weekly... they aren't very bright.

Edit (check my profile for more up-to-date info)

If you are still a CuriosityStream subscriber, be aware that they are currently mass-emailing subscribers with what I think is a VERY deceptive "offer". They push users to renew 2yr subs, promising continued Nebula access for bundle subscribers. In reality, Nebula access for CS subscribers expires on Dec 31st. This means you'll have <2 months of Nebula out of your "locked in" 2 year contract. All their communication seems to imply the opposite.

EverydayMoggie,
@EverydayMoggie@sfba.social avatar

When it came time to renew the Curiosity Stream bundle after a year, I dropped Curiosity Stream but kept the Nebula subscription. Nebula offers a lot more of the content I'm interested in; Curiosity Stream seemed kind of dumbed down, and some of their videos were full of factual errors.

My only wish with Nebula is to somehow persuade more of my favorite creators to be on it!
