Random question of the day: I think I need a new helmet (the pads are all falling apart, and I have not been a huge fan of the chin strap), what are people's favorites? I'm not racing anywhere, just need a good reliable helmet for going around town. I'm pretty sure the ones we have are Target specials, LOL. I should have asked for . (Update: after determining I was using an unsafe, 2013-era helmet which was falling apart, ended up with a Bontrager WaveCel, which was the best rating in a mid-price at my local bike shop. They did have the Specialized Align II, which is very highly rated and only $50)

Don't really have a personal recommendation, but you can see data about which helmets are worth buying here: https://www.helmet.beam.vt.edu/bicycle-helmet-ratings.html

Apparently, the GOP's only response to the coming AI apocalypse is trying to stamp out basic income as a socialist boogeyman.

This should come as no surprise.

The Party of Lincoln has a long history of picking corporate interests - in this case, the prospect of a desperate, cheap, bountiful and beggared workforce - over alleviating human suffering.

There is an ongoing spam attack on the fediverse for the last couple of days. It's more widespread than before, as attackers are targeting smaller servers to create accounts. Before, usually only mastodon.social was targeted and our team could take care of it. For server administrators out there: If you don't need open registrations, switch over to approval mode. If you do, blocking disposable e-mail providers is a massive stopgap to the problem. Mastodon also supports hCaptcha.

EverydayMoggie,

Try turning on these settings. The spam always has direct mentions, so it should help some.

Maybe 4:3 is the best aspect ratio because it’s a good compromise between 16:9 horizontal and 16:9 vertical video.

As a bonus, it provides backwards compatibility for most video made in the 20th century.

I made the mistake of going on Twitter today to find a tweet. 😬

I'm glad Urbanist Twitter is not representative of actual urbanists, because it's basically just this. 😆

I will never understand the mentality of people who dislike a YouTuber and then rant about it for months on social media, instead of doing something sane like, say, watching something else, making the content they want to see, or maybe touching grass.

I genuinely think that too much social media rots people's brains.

EverydayMoggie,
@EverydayMoggie@sfba.social avatar

I'm just one data point, but that is certainly not true of me. I watch a number of channels that center around cities or transportation, mostly because I just enjoy them. Each one brings something different to the table, and that's a good thing. I was also interested in all this years before I started watching videos about it.

@drahardja@sfba.social avatar

The armageddon is coming slowly, but surely. I shop for new insurance (auto, home, umbrella, etc.) once every few years to make sure I’m still getting decent deals. But this year, my insurance agent told me that I should be glad that I have insurance at all, because companies have stopped writing new policies in certain states, or at least limiting how many new ones they write per year.

, , and are now personas non grata for insurance companies, my agent said. Why is that, I wonder? Could it be because these states are the most likely to sustain major damage due to ? Wildfires, extreme weather, coastal floods, and hurricanes have changed their risk profiles, and insurance companies are paying attention.

Climate change is here, folks. Actuarial tables do not lie.

What are your thoughts on DNF (Did Not Finish)-ing books? Do you feel guilty about it? Do you worry you missed out on something? Or are you confident in dropping a book and reaching for the next one?

At what point are you most likely to DNF, if ever? What sorts of things cause you to DNF?

    Having some ice cream in the temporary plaza that @deanpreston deviously wants to turn into affordable housing

    EverydayMoggie,
    @EverydayMoggie@sfba.social avatar

    Much as I'd love to see vacant office space converted to housing, that would require overcoming a lot of barriers that a city-owned parcel without existing permanent structures doesn't need to overcome.

    Privately owned office buildings aren't likely to be converted to other uses until their current use becomes less profitable than turning them into something else. For many, zoning would have to changed to allow housing there.

    Building codes applicable to housing might have to be altered to accommodate new types of housing. (The one that comes immediately to mind is the requirement for residential units to have certain window placements.)

    Office > housing conversion would mean extensive redesign and retrofitting of things like plumbing. That's not cheap, and would almost certainly need some type of public funding assistance to make it viable.

    We should move forward with both Parcel K housing and the systems reforms that would make future office conversions feasible.

    Quick survey because I need to replace my 14-year-old monitor: Do I need a 4k monitor if I'm using it mostly for email, web browsing (with video) and occasional streaming? Is it worth spending extra, or will a non-4k monitor suit my needs? Keep in mind, I'll likely use this monitor for 14 or more years, so please make your recommendation what that in mind.

    Update: Thanks for all the comments so far. To answer a few questions: I have room for only 1 monitor, so I want it to be no smaller than 27" because I often have multiple windows open it it'd be nice if I could put them side-by-side sometimes. I'm willing to go bigger, if it fits into my budget. I'd like to spend no more than $600.

    EverydayMoggie,
    @EverydayMoggie@sfba.social avatar

    4k is one of those things you don't know you need until you experience it, then you will never go back. Also 120 Hz or higher refresh rate, makes everything just that much smoother. There is one caveat though, your GPU has to be capable of rendering that many pixels quickly enough. If your computer is older, it might be borderline. If that's a problem, you might want to opt for a 1440p display instead.

    If you're intending to keep the monitor for more than 2 or 3 years, don't buy an OLED display. Expected lifespan on those is relatively short, due to burn-in, especially if you're using it for work, with static UI elements remaining in the same place on screen for hours. Stick to IPS for this use case.

    The Gigabyte M28U would be a decent choice. It received excellent reviews, has good color calibration out of the box, and is moderately priced.

    @dangoodin

    EverydayMoggie,
    @EverydayMoggie@sfba.social avatar

    Yes. Link to the specs page: https://www.gigabyte.com/Monitor/M32U/sp#sp
    (Ignore the fact that they call this a gaming monitor. That doesn't mean it's unsuited for productivity.)

    M32U is slightly different from the M28U but was also reviewed pretty well. The various sizes in the same range of monitors can sometimes differ substantially in quality, but in this case the differences are relatively minor.

    @dangoodin

    EverydayMoggie,
    @EverydayMoggie@sfba.social avatar

    As I recall, they use panels from different manufacturers. (Monitor makers typically purchase the display panel component from one of a few manufacturers, and then build the rest of the monitor around that.) So there were small differences in color reproduction. Either one should work fine if you're not doing work where exact color is critical. Here are some videos so you can compare models.

    Some notes:
    • Prices have dropped considerably since these videos were made.
    • The videos talk about HDR (high dynamic range) performance. For what you're intending to do, that won't be a factor. Most videos are standard dynamic range, and for work apps it doesn't matter.

    Alright, let's get real here. Vancouver Island marmot versus Douglas squirrel – no contest!
