Never mind that "levels of crime" is probably a flimsy excuse, and not the real cause. You'd think we'd have learned that with the store closures in SF that used the same excuse and were caught in a blatant lie.

I know I like to rag on , but this behavior is becoming commonplace in the new world of over-the-air updated . You buy a car with a set of features, but it doesn’t ship with it. But worry not! It’s coming soon in a software update! One of these mornings you’ll wake up, and your car would have this brand new feature! It’s the FUTURE!

Except you’re not selling me a feature then; you’re selling me the hope of getting a feature that may come in a month, a year, or—in the case of Tesla FSD—probably never. But you are taking my money up front.

I feel this is something the FTC should be regulating. At the very least, require manufacturers to print up front a FIRM DATE on which they will either have delivered the promised feature, or refund the customer some agreed-upon amount of money. Otherwise, I feel like this is just permission for manufacturers to sell a stream of for real dollars.

Just wait until they start bricking cars remotely because the owner installed some sort of third-party accessory, or repaired something.

Listen how do we get Trader Joe's to not be evil about unions? Like if I'm gonna boycott I need you all with me so we can break their back real quick and get this over with.

EverydayMoggie,
@EverydayMoggie@sfba.social avatar

Probably you get them to accept the union by taking them to court.

@misc

EverydayMoggie,
@EverydayMoggie@sfba.social avatar

Yeah, but that's kind of the only option you have to fight them. Only a very small percentage of customers are willing to put their principles above their personal convenience. The rest will keep shopping there regardless.

I wonder what new scammy horrors will come from this investment?

Don’t kid yourself. If a bunch of billionaire VC investors actually want to build a better city, they’d spend the money in existing cities to improve public goods. This is a moneymaking scam in some way or another, I guarantee it. It’s going to have a bunch of externalities that taxpayers are going to bear, and it’s going to crash and burn in a decade when they get bored.

Anyone want to take a guess at what the scam is going to be? NFTs (that’s so last year)? AI? Some kind of rent-seeking nonsense? Tax loophole?

“Billionaire-backed futuristic city no longer shrouded in secrecy. Here are the details”

EverydayMoggie,
@EverydayMoggie@sfba.social avatar

I'm more inclined to think the scam isn't money but political power. However, I also suspect reality is going to smack them in the face and this thing will never be completed.

EverydayMoggie,
@EverydayMoggie@sfba.social avatar

I mean, these are the same people who think they're just going to waltz in and set up colonies in space (no doubt using human beings as disposable commodities), so practical obstacles don't mean much to them. Maybe the idea is more like when startups just dumped thousands of scooters on the streets of SF overnight, without bothering to get any permits or follow any regulations. They're thinking people will just throw up their hands and surrender.

Ah... the disinformation and propaganda bots have arrived on Mastodon.

If you haven't been on Twitter, they've been pushing this narrative that "western media didn't cover South Africa's arguments" while literally sharing BBC and DW clips a day before on the same account.

It flooded Twitter to the point that any suggested tweet below infosec content was about this garbage.

The account is like 6-days old... let's see if it gets nuked. It will show me if Mastodon is worth my time anymore.

Ro Khanna’s birth name is Rohit. He probably changed his name to market himself better in politics.

All you folks criticizing Nikki Haley for changing her name for political reasons are also going to criticize Ro Khanna for doing the same, right?

Or maybe name-shaming isn’t a great idea after all, and we should focus on their actions and policies?

EverydayMoggie,
@EverydayMoggie@sfba.social avatar

There aren't all that many people of any ethnicity who are called by their full name. It's really weird to attack someone for using a simplified version of their name.

Her political and policy choices are entirely fair game. And her actions do come across as suspect. But the name a person chooses to use should be a non-issue.

A 12 percent drop in the US murder rate is wild. And I say that as someone who has been spitting stats and rolling my eyes at people who say "crime has gotten so bad..."

It hasn't been "bad" by any real metric since the late 90s and even when it was "bad" if you're middle class (and not at risk of domestic violence*) you have zero things to worry about even in 1989.

*domestic violence improved for a few decades but then stalled. But, when people fret about crime this isn't what they mean.

EverydayMoggie,

I notice many women have been taught to be fearful of the world from infancy. So asking them to abandon that is pretty high-stakes; you're asking them to pull out one of the pieces that forms the foundation of their concept of self. You've got to convince them that the whole structure won't simply fall apart when they do that, or at least convince them to make a leap of faith.

@ignova @futurebird

Made a trip back to the US for the first time in a couple of years. A few things that stand out:

  • there are so many fucking ads everywhere

  • infrastructure is crumbling everywhere I look

  • cops cops cops cops cops. I saw more cops within a few hours of getting back to the states than I’ve seen in a few years of living abroad. Americans generally have no idea how hyper-policed they are.

EverydayMoggie,
@EverydayMoggie@sfba.social avatar

I wouldn't say we have no idea how overpoliced we are. Lots of us do know, but it's not as if we can do much about it, at least in the immediate term.

If people had less access to high voltage electricity, but many sources for low voltage DC (24V and under)

Would it still be possible to manufacture silicon conductors using more people and different machines?

Basically, could you do it with machines powered by small batteries?

eg. off the grid.

EverydayMoggie,
@EverydayMoggie@sfba.social avatar

I think the answer might depend on what you mean by silicon conductors. If you're talking about something like the chips that make our current generation of computers run, not a chance. The machinery needed is so complex there's literally one company in the world that makes it, and it takes a ridiculous amount of power.

One of the phrases that’s been popular in China this year according to this article: https://www.sixthtone.com/news/1014370

For more context, people in China have been assembling plain white bread sandwiches to try to understand how we live in this part of the world, and they are posting through it (the idea of eating anything cold or raw, especially a vegetable, is seen as especially disgusting in the Chinese world, with some exceptions)
