In her explanatory letter to professional standards, she wrote: “I’ve had to prove myself over and over to all the naysayers and doubters who believe my ascent through the ranks is solely due to the colour of my skin. I’ve had to jump through hoops that were created just for me.”

“There's so much white mediocrity that gets celebrated, and Black people, we have to be absolutely flawless to get half of [that]. We're trained to be like, 'If I'm not exceptional, I won't be loved! Certainly, I think that was my thing. So, yeah, I think I'm just learning now like, 'Oh, you are allowed to be loved! You don't have to be excellent or aspire to that term, 'Black excellence. What the hell?"

Here's some news that's more important and impacts more people than the SOTU address: Target is moving towards a PAID subscription model to compete with Amazon Prime...sigh Target has been straying further and further away from its original successful model. I don't pay anyone for the privilege of spending $ in their stores. And folks who are on a tight budget will be charged more because they can't join? Make it make sense.

Koritsi,
@Koritsi@blacktwitter.io avatar

@fulanigirl all the major grocery chains near me now have membership cards, this means that some of the weekly specials come with a condition: you can only get the lowest prices if you’re a member 🙄 also, have you noticed that not only are grocers harming us with these inflated prices, but also dictating what we eat and when. You want broccoli today, nope, you’ll have to wait next week when it goes on sale from $4 to $0.99; you may go weeks w/o broccoli! and greed will ☠️ us

Koritsi, (edited )
@Koritsi@blacktwitter.io avatar

@fulanigirl hmm didn’t notice about carrots;-) but another trend I hate is the 2 for X price; if I don’t have money for 1, what makes you think I can spend extra money to get 2, which might require storage space that I don’t have b/c rent prices mean we are living in smaller spaces. Canning, freezing or any other kind of buy in bulk “tips” are not feasible for everyone.

Koritsi,
@Koritsi@blacktwitter.io avatar

@fulanigirl the next thing that makes me so angry is that in my area they are putting and end to weekly paper flyers; this may seem like a great move for those of us with access to mobile apps/smart phones/internet but when I think of seniors like my mother who rely on these flyers to cobble together some form of grocery budget/shopping list, it makes me angry that, like you said, the most vulnerable are being left out/forgotten.

Instead of waiting for December 2024, scrambling to remember all the good things, all the things that made me happy in 2024, I will try to acknowledge these little moments of happiness as they arise.
