The only feeling I have about starship is dread.

They want to use that to launch batches of HUNDREDS of Starlinks at once. And guess where all those Starlinks will end up? The pieces that don't make it to the ground will end up in our upper atmosphere, screwing up the stratosphere, the ozone layer, who knows what else because SpaceX isn't required to do any environmental assessments of this.

Shit. Maybe a good time to post this essay I wrote yet again: https://theconversation.com/an-astronomers-lament-satellite-megaconstellations-are-ruining-space-exploration-215653

You know how you can smell a cigarette from far away, across the room, or after they left, or outside across the yard, or up the sidewalk, or on a restaurant patio, or even not even know where it’s coming from, but you can smell it?

Covid is aerosolized, it spreads across distances like that too. But you can’t smell it.

Think about that next time you smell cigarette smoke. Think about it next time you get that “just a cold” again.

99.9% of jobs do not require urgency of any kind, really they don't. We've all had a boss who acts like someone will die if we don't hit some made up deadline by people who don't even do the job. No one needs their meal 1 minute faster or the paperwork before tomorrow morning. Your time off actually doesn't need to wait. Sometimes I think about how legitimately bad most businesses are at time management and hiring, and I wonder how they manage to exist at all.

This is how Russia treats its prisoners of war. Ukrainian servicemen Roman Horilik returned home on May 31. He was one of the national guards, protecting the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and got captured in March 2022. You can see how starved he is. His body is skin and bones.

Remember when an airplane crashed in protest, rather than have Nigel Farage inside of it?

Also, remember that you can legally rhyme "Farage" with "Garbage" if you put the emphasis on the second syllable.

I'm a #Geek

An Unabashed Geek at that. As much as I like the way Apple looks and feels, I detest that you are locked into it. The same goes for Windoze.

With GNU/Linux you have multiple #Desktops. #Gnome is probably the most popular (but please for Gawd's sakes don't quote me). Then there's #KDE (which makes me think of Windoze). Then #Mate, #Cinnamon, #Budgie, #LXQt, #Deepin. These are just a few. Each has it's own pros and cons (LXQt is extremely light on resources but not very customisable). Deepin has incredible graphics and animations, but is extremely resource hungry. Mate uses Gnome 2 (because the author hated Gnome 3). etc etc etc...

The mainstream media aren’t unmasking that English Labour’s GB Energy scam. Great British Energy, to be headquartered in Scotland, is a cynical sop to Scottish voters who English Labour thinks will be too thick to figure out it’s just a brass plate on a door.

GB Energy won’t generate any energy but invest public money in offshore wind and solar projects to be owned and operated by private energy companies. It’s PFI all over again.

Y'all...please stop with the "scorpion and the frog" metaphors. Scorpions only sting when hunting prey or when threatened. They raise their stinger aggressively when threatened, giving any would-be predator or attacker ample warning, much the way rattlesnakes rattle or skunks raise their tails.

Scorpions are reclusive creatures and want to be left alone. So, not only does this BS fable pointlessly demonize innocent creatures, but it completely fails in a literary sense.

See also: "boiling frog." Just cut that shit out, k?

Mikal,
@Mikal@sfba.social avatar

I've been thinking about what would make a better metaphor to replace the parable of The Scorpion And The Frog. How about this: The Capitalist And The Sea Turtle.

A capitalist is shipwrecked on a remote island. He sees a very large sea turtle on the beach and asks if it will carry him back to the mainland.

The turtle says "But you are a capitalist. If I let you onto my back, you will kill me and sell my flesh and shell for profit."

"But that would be foolish because we would both die," said the capitalist. "It is inconsistent with my own enlightened self interest!"

Accepting this logic, the sea turtle allows the capitalist climb upon its shell. Halfway across the strait, the capitalist tries to strangle the turtle. But the turtle, being at home in the sea, dives deep, forcing the capitalist to let go. Safely out of reach, the sea turtle asks the capitalist, now flailing helplessly, "Why did you do that?"

"I am a capitalist. I could not help myself," the capitalist replied, before sinking out of sight.
