A reminder: epidemics and pandemics are expected to increase in frequency as the climate crisis advances [1] and as humans build deeper into wildlands [2].

So what do we do?

  1. Address the climate crisis!
  2. Embrace urbanism, controlled growth, and leave wildlands alone.
  3. Push for infrastructure improvements for indoor air quality.
  4. Push for better healthcare and sick leave policies.
  5. Advocate for better funding for scientific research.

Frage an die Lebensmittelchemiker_innen im Raum: ich habe Waldmeistersirup gemacht. Weil Waldmeister Cumarin enthält, habe ich beim Verschenken dazu gesagt, lieber in Maßen genießen, weil eben: Cumarin. Was die erwartbare Frage nach sich zog: wie viel ist "in Maßen"? Ich finde leider keine konkreteren Angaben wieviel Cumarin in Waldmeister nach drei-vier Tagen Welken noch drin ist und wie viel davon ins Wasser abgegeben wird usw.

Ich wohne seit vielen Jahren in einer Mietwohnung mit Internet über DSL und mittlerweile wurde im Wohngebiet offfiziell Glasfaser ausgebaut. Die Kästen dafür stehen direkt vor dem Haus. Mein Telekom-Anbieter hat auch das Angebot, dass man sich anmelden kann, damit das Haus, in dem man wohnt, ebenfalls angeschlossen wird.

Blöd nur: der Vermieter will nicht. Er sagt, es gäbe einen Rahmenvertrag mit dem Kabelanbieter und man soll halt das nehmen.

Wie sind eure Erfahrungen?

Falls ihr eine schon etwas ältere Fritz!Box 7590 habt (also mehr als 3-4 Jahre im Einsatz), kann es wohl passieren, dass das 2,4 GHz-WLAN ausfällt, weil Bauteile verschmort sind 😟

The Kansas Wheat company, in the midst of the Great Depression, realized that the poorest families were reusing their sacks (containing flour and grain) to sew dresses for women and girls, so to make them more captivating they decided to print them with floral and colorful motifs.
The initiative was a huge success: they made sure that the ink used for the logos would fade after a simple wash, and some bags even had the patterns already drawn on the fabric, ready to be cut and sewn.

ich mach's mal konkret: Ich suche ab dem 01.10.2024 eine remote Festanstellung und möchte das Freelancerinnen-Dasein hinter mir lassen.

Ich kann: Digitale Barrierefreiheit von vorne bis hinten, Inklusion bzw. DEI umsetzen, Unterschiedlichste Menschen beraten und schulen, Medieninhalte erstellen und Software entwickeln (PHP + Ökosystem, Python, bereit für was Neues).

Kennt oder hat jemand eine passende Stelle frei? Im Thread sind noch ein paar mehr Infos.

OK, let's try something new. I'm not well connected because I'm bad at in person networking, and this is compounded by my decision to stop flying to conferences. So, can I use mastodon to find potential experimental colleagues who would like to work together?

Ideally for me, this would be people in Europe so I can visit by train, but it's not essential. I have some ideas for interesting projects and grant applications, and I'd love to develop those into concrete projects in close participation with experimental colleagues.

One of the main themes I'm interested in is how we can relate various neural mechanisms (e.g. inhibition, recurrence, nonlinear responses) to functions, using computational modelling to ask 'what if' questions that couldn't be answered by experiments alone.

I'm also interested in thinking about how we can use "information bottleneck" ideas to think more clearly about what computations networks of neurons are doing, going the next step beyond representing information to computing / discarding information.

A big question I'd like to answer is to find out how different brain regions work together in such a flexible and scalable way.

A technique I'm very excited about at the moment is using modern ML algorithms to train spiking neural networks at cognitively challenging tasks, making them directly comparable to both psychophysical and electrophysiological data.

Part of that could involve building in new mechanisms, like dendritic structure or neuromodulators into those networks and allowing the trained networks to make use of them in the best way possible.

I'd also love to build jointly motivated experimental and theoretical/synthetic datasets to test models against.

Ich bin ein bisschen begeistert davon, wie völlig blauäugig hier davon ausgegangen wird, diese formale Abgrenzung LePens von der AfD sei mehr als ein Rollenspiel. Die Funktion derartiger Brüche mit extremen Teilen einer Bewegung dient vor allem dazu, sich selbst als gemässigter und tauglicher Partner zu gerieren, während hinter den Kulissen die Kooperation unverändert fortgeführt wird („positive radical flank effect“).

For those who aren’t aware, Microsoft have decided to bake essentially an infostealer into base Windows OS and enable by default.

From the Microsoft FAQ: “Note that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers."

Info is stored locally - but rather than something like Redline stealing your local browser password vault, now they can just steal the last 3 months of everything you’ve typed and viewed in one database.

Copilot+ Recall has been enabled by default globally in Microsoft Intune managed users, for businesses.
