I am an opossum. I may look scary, but I mean you no harm. Now with biofluorescence. I think COVID vaccines so far, but I'm starting to lose count. I still mask in indoor public places.

There should be a reverse Indiana Jones film where a South American tribe sneaks into the Vatican, steals some relics, and gets away on a boat while a bunch of men in golden robes shake their fists and shout their strange language.

The power of seeing just one or two other people wearing a mask while I am wearing a mask in a big public space is something I think we don't talk about enough. Maybe we can't fix each other's risk overall but you decrease my isolation and the potential negative attention of other people on me and as a covid disabled person in this terrible world, that really matters

VirginiaSOpossum,
@VirginiaSOpossum@ohai.social avatar

@grimalkina I admit I have taken to thinking to myself, "Ha ha, I have a mask and you don't!" when I am out among the maskless, so as to feel less stigmatized. Last weekend I was in an elevator with one masked person and two who weren't, and "Ha ha, we have masks and you don't!" actually came right out my mouth.

This may be obvious, but I recently started routinely adding "-youtube" to google searches. This eliminates most pages with links to garbage YouTube-monetized videos that try to attract people looking for basic instructions on how to do simple things. Greatly improves the quality of search results.

I was not gay or trans but I had difficult parents. If you think these parents' "rights" laws only affect one group of children or another, you're so wrong. These laws attack the autonomy of all children. This is everybody's fight.
I respect the fact that right now it is LGBTQ+ kids who are in the most immediate danger. But they need support from all of us.

This account is an attempt to try to inspire people to get involved in composting and its many benefits.

For me, it is inconceivable to do nothing about an issue especially if it is possible to act for the environment.

It is called doing a good deed, not for me in particular but for the greater good because the situation is critical.

Everyone told me you will never be popular on social media with a subject like composting. Because of mastodon, this has happened.

Thank you.

VirginiaSOpossum,
@VirginiaSOpossum@ohai.social avatar

@compost Where I live, there is curbside compost pickup. The vast bulk of my compostable material is coffee grounds. I would just like to recommend strongly that you freeze your compostable coffee grounds while you are accumulating them. (I do this in a paper ice cream container lined with a compostable bag.) The rest of my compost can stay in its basket on the kitchen counter and does not attract fruitlies. This is the only clever composting tip I have, but I want to share it.

@textfiles Back in the 1970s my dad was once working on repairs to the replica of Sainte Marie among the Iroquois, and had to work from a copy of the state's specs for historic recreations. It required things like trowel marks in the plaster. I wish I still had it.

An only slightly sarcastic proposal: these road-tank style pickup trucks should not be classified as passenger vehicles, and should require active CDL certifications to drive.

Need one to haul shit around for your business? Great! There's a licensing framework for that!

This is the best discussion of the movie that I've seen, bc it hits the core issue of Doll Barbie as an avatar of conservative women.

Doll Barbie represents the very edge of what women are supposed to want in conservative culture and Film Barbie traversed it repeatedly.

"Women's liberation" is something that many conservative women want/wanted. But they want to never scrutinize religion, race, marriage, gender, capitalism, etc https://www.thenation.com/article/culture/barbie-greta-gerwig-film-review/

Google lards its search results with paid links.

Alexa won’t speak ill of Amazon.

Facebook and TikTok manipulate the content they show you.

It’s reasonable to expect that assistants sold by these or other tech companies will steer you to the products and services that make the most profit for the tech companies.

And users have no way of knowing whose interests are being favored, or how they are being data-mined.
