The Burlington, , area where I live is right in the path of totality for the solar eclipse coming up on April 8, 2024. Naturally there is a great amount of excitement! (And hopefully we don’t have a cloudy day… hard to know… it’s April!)

I was greatly amused to see that one of our local churches is selling T-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts with a distinctly Vermont flavor! 🤣🐄 🐮

NASA is sending a software update to the Voyager 2 spacecraft today!

The patch contains logic to auto-recover from glitches similar to one in May 2022, when the AACS system on Voyager 1 started sending garbled data. The root cause was not fully diagnosed. The patch will be activated/tested on Oct 28. Voyager 1 will be next.

Data will be sent at 16 bps with a 19 kW transmitter using the 70-m dish at @canberradsn.

Shipping is 1.8% of global emissions. That's less than air travel. Reducing that by a third is a 0.6% drop. Noise compared to many other areas.

50% of shipping is moving fossil fuels. If we stop extraction of fossil fuels. Then we can halve our emissions from shipping overnight.

But we really need to focus on other areas, the gains here are tiny. Fix surface transport (hint, build more trains). Or steel production.

@stevesilberman I think a big difference between pre-1990 and now is that they had a harder time finding each other and planning get-togethers by mail and ads in magazines was a lot more arduous. They reinforce each other now as well as being much more visible to the rest of us.

Diver touching 'Two Continents', between North America and Europe, Silfra, Iceland.

Silfra a fissure between North American and Eurasian tectonic plates in Thingvellir National Park. Rift was formed in 1789 AD, by earthquakes accompanying divergent movement of two tectonic plates.

Diving and snorkeling site at Silfra is right where two continents meet and drift apart about 2cm per year. Silfra, only place in the world where you can dive or snorkel directly in crack between two tectonic plates.
